student participation . . . At Pembroke State the student ac- tivist is the student involved in con- structive work. Student government committees wrestle with the problems of living in a college community. Art stu- dents hold an annual art auction to pro- vide a scholarship for a talented prospective student and sponsor a state- wide high school art contest. In more than thirty special interest groups, stu- dents work and play. The natural science club makes field trips to observe marine life at Beaufort. The Young Democrats and Young Republicans journey by the busload to hear presidential candidates. The religious unions discuss pertinent world issues. The Pembroke Players, the Swingers and Singers, and the college band share their talents in spirited campus performances and tour in ever widening circles as PSC ' s reputation reaches greater audiences.

for its expanding student enrollment. In the past ten years Pembroke State College has become one of the fastest grow- ing colleges in North Carolina, increasing from 345 students in 1958, to 933 in 1963, to 1,564 in 1968. Although more than half of the students commute from a radius of fifty miles, the outreach of the college extends to 61 counties and 17 states, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Massachusetts. Students also come from the Canal Zone and Australia. A growing number of mature men and women return with renewed zest and sense of purpose to complete an interrupted education. Reach- ing far afield across a wide spectrum of back- grounds and interests, but never losing its touch with southeastern North Carolina, PSC offers a basis for developing lively ap- preciation, critical judgment, and growing concern in a changing world.
