Responsiveness to need is a mark of academic responsibility. Meeting the requirements of a varied group of students, as well as the expectations of a wide area for educational lead- ership and opportunity, is the task of college leadership. The Board of Trustees represents the moral, economic, and political support of the region and is responsible for establish- ing basic policies. President English E. Jones, effective advo- cate of the Pembroke cause at home and away, has enabled the college to reach long-range goals and to formulate new ones based on sound planning. Dr. Kenneth Kersh, dean of the faculty, and Dr. Richard C. Pis- ano, associate dean, provide vigorous and encouraging aca- demic direction. For students, however, a well-trained faculty furnishes the essential stimulus to reach new levels of achieve- ment.

intellectual emphasis . . . While providing the tools and the environment for learning, PSC puts the emphasis not only on growing knowledge, but also on strengthening intellectual purpose. For example, academic suc- cess is a requirement for college marshals, mem- bers of student-faculty committees, and other positions of honor and responsibility. The new Mary Livermore Library, warehouse of knowl- edge, has more than 50,000 volumes, 327 maga- zines, three microfilm readers, and up-to date audio-visual facilities in air-conditioned, brightly lighted, handsomely furnished surroundings. Excellent new science laboratories and class- rooms encourage the exploration of the physical world. The books, the equipment, the guidance of interested teachers, and the leadership of good students combine to make a favorable en- vironment for reaching the goal of intellectual enrichment.
