Under the tall pines the new red brick build- ings rise. The sound of hammers, saws, and drills, the presence of concrete mixers, cranes, and crews of workmen have become a daily part of the Pembroke scene. The campus has grown from five buildings in 1950 to more than twenty in 1968 with others already on the drawing boards. Business and English classes moved into the new Business Administration building, on the left, in March. The new Science building and the new Mary Livermore library have been in use since 1967. Pembroke State College is reaching to meet the demands of a student population that has grown more than 400 per cent in the past ten years. T, !!. } r fkp Ll J if ' fi ' m liiii i mrmi i responsive direction Board of Trustees: L. to R., Herman Dial. Harrv W. Locklcar. Robert Bums, Raymond Mallard. Business Manager; William Mason Kenneth Kersh Dean of the College. Hal W. Little. President; English Jones, Zeb A. Lowry, William E. Britt. PumelfSwett, R.D. McMillan Elmer Lowry. Responsiveness to need is a mark of academic responsibility. Meeting the requirements of a varied group of students, as well as the expectations of a wide area for educational lead- ership and opportunity, is the task of college leadership. The Board of Trustees represents the moral, economic, and political support of the region and is responsible for establish- ing basic policies. President English E. Jones, effective advo- cate of the Pembroke cause at home and away, has enabled the college to reach long-range goals and to formulate new ones based on sound planning. Dr. Kenneth Kersh, dean of the faculty, and Dr. Richard C. Pis- ano, associate dean, provide vigorous and encouraging aca- demic direction. For students, however, a well-trained faculty furnishes the essential stimulus to reach new levels of achieve- ment. intellectual emphasis . . . While providing the tools and the environment for learning, PSC puts the emphasis not only on growing knowledge, but also on strengthening intellectual purpose. For example, academic suc- cess is a requirement for college marshals, mem- bers of student-faculty committees, and other positions of honor and responsibility. The new Mary Livermore Library, warehouse of knowl- edge, has more than 50,000 volumes, 327 maga- zines, three microfilm readers, and up-to date audio-visual facilities in air-conditioned, brightly lighted, handsomely furnished surroundings. Excellent new science laboratories and class- rooms encourage the exploration of the physical world. The books, the equipment, the guidance of interested teachers, and the leadership of good students combine to make a favorable en- vironment for reaching the goal of intellectual enrichment. Competitive Sports . , . Each year PSC produces winning teams in many sports. The 1968 cross- country team upset Wake Forest and Davidson among others. With eleven wins, two losses they stole the N.A.I. A. District 29 championship from Lynch- burg. The 1967-68 track team with a re- cord of eight wins, two losses were runners-up to Catawba College in the N.A.I. A. District 26 tournament. With a record of nine wins, three losses PSC ' s 1968 soccer team produced three Ail- American candidates after having upset East Carolina, Davidson, and Methodist College. The 1967-68 basketball team ran away with several tournament trophies last year. With a record of twenty wins, nine losses the team finished second in the district. The base- ball team which finished with a record of twenty-eight wins, seven losses and pro- duced two Ail-American players, sent many large colleges and universities down to defeat. Indeed. PSC ' s Braves consistently reach high levels of ex- cellence in competitive sports. student participation . . . At Pembroke State the student ac- tivist is the student involved in con- structive work. Student government committees wrestle with the problems of living in a college community. Art stu- dents hold an annual art auction to pro- vide a scholarship for a talented prospective student and sponsor a state- wide high school art contest. In more than thirty special interest groups, stu- dents work and play. The natural science club makes field trips to observe marine life at Beaufort. The Young Democrats and Young Republicans journey by the busload to hear presidential candidates. The religious unions discuss pertinent world issues. The Pembroke Players, the Swingers and Singers, and the college band share their talents in spirited campus performances and tour in ever widening circles as PSC ' s reputation reaches greater audiences. w 13 for its expanding student enrollment. In the past ten years Pembroke State College has become one of the fastest grow- ing colleges in North Carolina, increasing from 345 students in 1958, to 933 in 1963, to 1,564 in 1968. Although more than half of the students commute from a radius of fifty miles, the outreach of the college extends to 61 counties and 17 states, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Massachusetts. Students also come from the Canal Zone and Australia. A growing number of mature men and women return with renewed zest and sense of purpose to complete an interrupted education. Reach- ing far afield across a wide spectrum of back- grounds and interests, but never losing its touch with southeastern North Carolina, PSC offers a basis for developing lively ap- preciation, critical judgment, and growing concern in a changing world. !Sfc-. ' ■: |5 _ mm K- ■■15 Dedication You are all just like my children to me, says the man to whom we dedicate the 1969 Indian- head, Dr. Kenneth Johnson. He is characterized by an ever active mind, a quick wit, and a genuine concern for his students. Dr. Johnson has, for the past five years at PSC, challenged those in his classes to think, to make decisions, and, thereby, to learn. Educator, loyal member of the college family, and friend, we dedicate the 1969 Indianhead to you. Dr. Johnson concentrates on soccer: practice and theory. 16 ►  -, ,•..,., I .AT; ' KSPfl H MB H H •1 1 JmpH ACADEMICS The President r % f Pembroke students, for whom the College exists and on whose education al are today both like and unlike those of the first 80 years. College trustees, administration, and faculty are keenly aware of both the similarities and the differences and of the need for understanding in dealing with student needs and student life. The emphasis must be, as it has been, on providing the maximum educational opportunity for every student 1 o this end, a strong faculty has been assembled, better buildings and equipment have been provided and broader, deeper curriculums are being offered. All this is being done with an awareness of the ferment in student life and attitudes which exi,sts everywhere Pembroke being no exception. Every possible effort is being exerted to keep open lines of communication with students and to meet, whenever possible, their legitimate and proper requests. Many steps are being taken to assure students the opportunity to express and receive consideration for their views Seminars with student leaders have been held before the opening of each session. The President ' s office and offices of his colleagues are open to individual students and student groups. A college-wide committee com- prising representation from students, faculty, and administration has been established to consider matters of interest to all. Through these and other methods the College is determined to meet the real needs and aspirations of its students. — English E. Jones, President Its resources are focussed. 20 A dministration Dr. Kenneth G. Kersh Dean of the College Dr. Rich:ird C. Pisano Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Carl M. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam. When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. —Alfred Tennyson A warmth of friendliness, a devotion to duty, a genuine concern for others, an understanding tolerance, an efficient and effective manner-these marked IVBss Marjorie Kanable as college librarian and friend to all at Pembroke State College. In her span of years, crowded with good works and loving concern, surged the quiet power of her cooperative spirit and understanding patience. Pembroke State College will long feel the benedic- tion of this life well lived. 23 tlf Secretarial Staff Lae Ruth Alway Joanna Belcher Joyce Cox Betly F. Cummings Theresa G, DeCaHo Clementine L. Since PSC is ever reaching toward a higher level of excellence, only the students of 1968-69 will know Pembroke State as it is now.
