Oxendine was a man With whom I worked With whom I played With whom I prayed. He was a husband — a father — a son He was a Professor — a Dean — a Director He was a citizen — a neighbor and a friend He was a CHRISTIAN and he spoke softly. He loved his family — his community — these plains He loved his church and the COLLEGE He loved his faculty — his friends — this student body And to each he always spoke softly. He respected his colleagues and opinions contrary to his own. He knew not false pride, professional jealously, only humility. He knew only dedication, loyalty, devotion and he spoke softly. He was a leader, always ready to assume responsibility— to give of his time and substance— to take a stand based on his own high sense of conviction, of logic, of justice, and right. He was a leader — he was a man Above all that he was Above all that he did Above all that he wanted to be or do He was a teacher, both in word and action and he spoke softly. Some may think the gentle voice is stilled But I think it speaks, and if we but listen It speaks softly. It speaks to those who were privileged to sit in his classes, in his committee meetings, in his civic clubs, in his faculty meetings and in his church. Yes, the spirit speaks; and, as always it speaks softly. It urges the family that life continues, that the same courage and the same dedication to the high call of service to man and dedication to God contain the answers to life ' s mysteries and perplexities and it speaks softly. It urges this student body to continue striving for that same high excellence which he set as the goal for himself and this COLLEGE and it speaks softly. It urges the faculty to remain dedicated to those loftly ideals and standards of personal and professional conduct that marked his own career and ft speaks softly. It urges this COLLEGE and its leaders to press onward — to grow in service and dedication to the high call of education — to keep the faith that the primary purpose, the primary cause, of this college ' s existence — of every man ' s existence — in the pursuit of truth and It speaks softly. No, the gentle, kind voice is not stilled. It has only joined with those of Madison, Reynolds, Hunter, Stillwell, Elliott, Seymour, Albright and Hammond. With them it now speaks. To them it speaks — of this COLLEGE, of its ALUMNI, of YOU and ME. Together they speak to all of us, and they speak softly. His absence creates a void in his HOME, on this CAMPUS, and in this COMMUNITY. He was a man — a man of courage — a man of Faith — a man of wisdom, kindness, and humility, AND HE SPOKE SOFTLY. President English E. Jones 11 For a Quarter of a Century of service, the senior class dedicates the 1967 Indianhead to Miss Marjorie Kanable, who has spent these years willingly helping everyone who would step into her domain, the Pembroke State college library. 12 For His Continued Efforts to widen his students ' learning experiences, and to share with them his vast accumulation of knowledge, the senior class has chosen for Teacher of the Year Dr. Cyril Abbott. 13 Spring Arts Festival 14 Miss Phyllis Kelly . This year ' s INDIANHEAD is the product of much planning, long hours of picture taking, endless hours of picture identifying, writing of copy and captions, typing, and, at times, a lot of worrying. The staff endeavored to compile in one hook all the memories of the 1966-1967 Pembroke State College aca- demic year. Although we started late, we pushed ourselves to accomplish two goals: first, to make this the best, most thorough yearbook that Pembroke State College has ever published; and second, to receive the yearbook before the end of the spring semester. This annual is a reflection of you, the student body of Pembroke State. We have tried to depict this campus as you have created and believed in it day by day. Only you can determine whether or not we have ful- filled our goals. As Editor I would like to extend my gratitude to numer- ous individuals. Hunter Publishing Company, and in particu- lar their representative Ed Goldston, has been of immense help. Mr. Goldston has stayed close at hand so that he might help solve all our many problems. Mr. Pendergraft, our fac- ulty advisor, deserves thanks for all that he has done. Janice Odom, the Assistant Editor, has done an outstanding job. Without her aid, this yearbook would not have been com- pleted. To my staff, I say a heart felt thank you for always being willing to take on one more task. I must give a special thank you to my room mate for putting up with me during the crises which at times the annual presented. It was she who helped keep my spirits high. To you, the student body of Pembroke State College, I say thank you for giving me the opportunity to edit your yearbook. I realize the great trust you have bestowed on me, and I only hope that I have lived up to that trust. The 1967 year at Pembroke is almost at an end. The stu- dents will soon have only their memories and the INDIAN- HEAD to remind them of this year. We, the staff, hope that you will cherish this yearbook. In closing I say, Take the INDIANHEAD and enjoy it. You may as well because you have already paid for it. Sincerely, Mary Jo Bird Editor 256 ■n Mary H. Livermore uorai) Pembroke State College Mary H.
