Rather it is a feeble effort to say some of the thoughts that may assure them of our deep appreciation of their work . A work of art such as this book is not just so many pictures, so many names , etc. , placed here for record. Here is found a synthesis of all those ideas that have gone into the work of this year. Out of the experiences of life at its growing edge have come forth the weaving of this fabric. Congratulations are in order, so to all the members of the staff and their sponsor we say, The whole college is indebted to you. Ralph D. Wellons THE BUSINESS MANAGER Purnell Swett CO-EDITORS Isa P. Valandra Betty Raye Hammond Dora Lee Chavls Helen Bell Christine Corn Pembroke State College Pembroke, North Caroliilf I Foreword A thousand unseen hands Reach down to hel p you to their peace- crowned height; And all the forces of the firmament Shall fortify your strength. Ella Wheeler Wilcox In our search for a theme for the 1956 INDIANHEAD, we became fascinated by the parade of the many hands which have played and are playing a great part in our college life - and in our lives to be The toiling hands of our forefathers , The helping hands of state officials, The moulding hands of teachers , The loving hands of parents , The guiding hands of friends. The planning hands of trustees. The recording hands of writers. The friendly hands of fellow students. The building hands of architects , The well-wishing hands of relatives. The encouraging hands of alumni. The trusting hands of the younger gen- eration , The praying hands of loved ones. The unseen hands of countless bene- factors , All joining forces to give us the best that life has to offer at Pembroke State College . With this in mind we chose as our theme, HANDS. May these pages of history of the ac- complishments of many hands keep alive in our memories the true spirit of P.S.C. m; - ' M V I am the Child You hold in your hand my destiny. You determine, largely, whether I shall succeed or fail. Give me, I pray you, those things that make for happiness. Train me, I beg you, that I may be a blessing to the world. Mamie Gene Cole . The 1956 Indianhead, to Dr. and Mrs. R. D. Wellons whose world-wide hands have served the college most faithfully during these 14 years. These hands have Guided our steps Warmed our hearts , Soothed our ills, Cradled our weaknesses, Given us food for body, mind, and spirit. Smoothed the rough spots , Lifted us up. Kindly reproved us. Comforted us in our sorrows. V ' • ' Jf rtt ' Enough if something From our hands have power To live, and act, And serve the future hour. Mrs. Willafred Wellons Clasped our hands in sympathy, happiness, and love. Motivated and inspired us. Made life more meaningful. Led us in beautiful paths of light, love, and truth. Gently prodded us on to greater heights of attainment, and Pointed the way to greater service . These hands that have guided us here will be the hands that greatly mould and influence our world of tomorrow. In future years one of our most treasured memories will be that of your beauti- ful , beautiful hands . 13 .
