We have seen the completion of two new buildings and the beginning of the construction of a third. We look for- ward with assurance to the completion of others. But our greatest expectations center upon the possibili- ties of higher scholarship, more creativity, more unleash- ing of the mind for its quest into the unknown. The 1950 Indianhead Staff has set the pace for the new day. Our commendation goes to them for work faithfully done. FACULTY Byars Jacobs Kenable Kennedy Livermore Lowry, I. Lowry, R. Marsh Martin J. COLLEGE ASSISTANTS DEDICATION Dean Clifton Oxendine In recognition of a long and faithful service rendered Pembroke State College, this, The 1950 Indianhead is hereby dedicated to Dean Clifton Oxendine. We know him as being one who is inter- ested in the welfare of the youth of this community, and especially those who pass through the halls of our College. He is perhaps our greatest historian in regard to the history of the people of Robeson County. We think of him as being a part of this College, since his duties are so broad and varied. His soft words of guidance have encouraged us until at last we stand poised to step into life unafraid. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Jesse Oxendine Margaret Locklear President Secretary-Treasurer Ray Chavis Dr. Harold W. Kennedy Vice-President Class Adviser The Senior Class is indeed fortunate to have as its Class Adviser Dr. Harold W. Kennedy. He is recognized as a man of great ability in organ- izing and promoting any worth-while project around the College. The products of his thinking and planning are beginning to grow in number. Even The Lndianhead is one of his projects. He is always working along with the other faculty members to make the students here feel that they are indeed living in a college atmosphere. Whatever the College has been or done, we feel that we have been a part of it and that that is really our history. Whether it has been progress in the academic field or in the field of sports, we have been a part of this progress. We have witnessed a phenomenal growth of the College during the past four years, not only a growth of the physical plant, but a growth as well in the other things that go to make up a College. Our history here has been one of transition. We have been changing during the past four years. From the confused and indifferent little band of four years ago, we have grown into a confi- dent and determined group. We now have an aim and a realization of pur- pose in life. Some of these Seniors will be remembered for some special work he or she did while passing this way. Jesse Oxendine perhaps will be re- membered for his ability with a Trumpet or for his feats on the gridiron. Barto Clark will leave memories of his efficient work as head of the Stu- dent Council, or his ability as an actor, or even his absence from the head of the Dean ' s List will be noted. A promising Vocalist leaves in the person of Vernon Ray Thompson. Others of the Senior Class of 1950 will be remembered for different things, but in one thing we are agreed. For those who come after us, we wish for them even greater growth and greater success than even we the Senior Class of 1950 has achieved. 13 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Newman Oxendine President James B. In the opening game of the season the Braves scored three touchdowns in the second half to defeat the Tabor City Red Yams 26-6 at the college field in Pembroke Saturday afternoon, October 1. The Braves led at the half 6-0 by virtue of a second quarter touchdown on a 6-yard line plunge by Fullback Moland Strickland. The Red Yams scored on a 24-yard pass from Dave Hooks to Orben Fowler in the third. After Delton Locklear went over from tne one for the Scalpers second tally, Jesse Oxendine raced 62 yards to the Tabor City 5 to set up the third score by Leslie Locklear. Walter Locklear got the last six-pointer from the Yams eleven. The following Saturday the Braves ran and passed their way to a 14-0 win over the Pope Air Men of Fort Bragg at Braves Field for their second win. The Braves then journeyed to Clinton, N. C. to take on the undefeated and unscored-on E. M. I. Rams. It was a well-played and hard-fought game with each team scoring seven points. On November 4, E. M. I. came to Braves Field to get revenge for that tie. In a very exciting game the Braves proved too strong for the Rams and left the gridiron with a 13-7 victory. After having two touchdowns called back by penalties, the Braves pushed over another to take the lead at 7-0. E. M. I. roared back to tie it up at 7-7 at the half. But the Braves were not to be denied this victory. In the waning seconds of the game Leslie Locklear took a pass behind the Ram defenders and went all the way. In a return engagement with Pope Field the Braves added another scalp to their string of victories. After trailing 6-0, the Braves caught fire and went on to gain an 18-6 victory. Then in quick succession the Braves trounced Tabor City 20-7, and Whiteville 18-6. This rounded out the regular season of play. Viewed from any angle this has been a highly successful season for the Braves. Coach Sampson is looking forward to another good season next year. Jesse Oxendine the signal-barking quarterback will be missed as he is leaving via graduation. However lots of good men will be left. The names cf Captain Ned Sampson and Halfback Delton Ray Locklear will be heard often when the Braves take to the gridiron next season. The best of luck to them. 41 V ' ::■: Delton R. The team has dropped a few games but always the scores have been close. So far the Braves have 21 victories and 6 defeats. Returning lettermen this year include Delton Ray Locklear, Ned Samp- son, Hoover Lloyd, Walter Locklear, Les Locklear, and Tom Oxendine. The Braves will be strong in Basketball for years to come, and promise to be very tough for the next couple of years since the strength of the team lies in a group of Sophomores.
