THE 1H9 INVIANHBAd Published by THE SENIOR CLASS Pembroke State College Pembroke, North Carolina Editor Agnes Hunt Chavis Business Manager Archie Oxendine Assistant and Acting Editor Vernon Hazel Lowry =J PEMBROKE NORTH CAROLINA 5 D Q ' ■F Dr. Ralph Dillingham Wellons FOREWORD President ' s Message Colleges differ from factories, but the public tends to evaluate them in much the same way. Both are rated according to the quality of the product they put out. The quality of at least some of the gradu- ates is known by the yearbook they edit. We congratulate the Indianhead Staff of 1949 on the good showing they have made in this year ' s annual. They have maintained the usual high standards and we are grateful. THE FACULTY James A. RALPH DILLINGHAM WELLONS We, the senior class of the year nineteen hundred and forty-nine, when searching for an individual to whom to dedicate this yearbook, unanimously decided that this honor should go to our beloved presi- dent, Dr. Ralph Dillingham Wellons, who has been our guide and counselor for these many years. To you, Dr. Wellons, we owe a debt of gratitude for your unswerv- ing loyalty to all that is good in college life. To you we owe a grate- ful thanks for the progress that our college has made during the past seven years and even more, we owe you a debt of gratitude for that growth that promises to come in the future. We leave these halls with deep regret that we will not be here to enjoy these improvements but we trust that we may look ahead with anticipation, as well as look backward with pride, to greater accomplishment under your guiding hand. For some reason there developed an atmosphere of intellectual curi- osity that has never been equalled. Many members of this class were heroes and heroines in baseball and basketball during the freshman year and the years that followed. As is true of all freshmen, they suffered many indignities, but by the end of the year all greenness and freshness had worn off, and they joyously entered the hallowed halls as sophomores. As sophomores, athletic competition was continued and much social activity entered the picture. Active participation in other college activities was common during the second year. With the Junior year came many changes in personnel. Drama- tics were added to the interests of the members of the class. Thus came the play, The Campbells Are Coming and Magenta John- ston captivated the audience with her excellent acting. An occasion al party was held during the year. The high light of the year was the Junior-Senior banquet and reception. The largest and, many say, the best banquet yet. At last the senior year and the long anticipated climax of our col- lege careers. With all its dignity and importance, there have been lighter moments when some underclassman has trampled the dignity of a senior and suffered the wrath of the overlords. Many meetings about rings, programs and all activities that enter into commence- ment time, have occupied our time. Practice Teaching, with all its trials and tribulations has been weathered by most members of our class. It is with pride that we, the largest class yet, pass on the heritage of our college. Good luck, Underclassmen. Onward and Upward. 17 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Barto Clark. Jr President James Leon Hunt Vice-President Carl Revels. Jr Secretary-Treasurer Harlie Carter Ray Chavb Barto Clark. ACTIVITIES 27 rS SBBm Sm Bll STUDENT COUNCIL Student Government at Pembroke State College is a comparatively new innovation, having had its beginnings in late 1948 and coming to full fruition during the present year. The student council has taken many of the responsibilities that were formerly carried by the faculty. This council is responsible for much routine organizational work and for the promotion of many phases of student activities. Its success in the early months of its life augur well for its continued success and growth. It is said that we grow with added responsibilities and the members of our student council certainly attest to the truth of this statement. 28 INdlAHHEAV Vernon Hazel Lowry Acting Editor in Chief Archie Oxendine Business Manager Fred Lowry Advertising Manager STAFF Agnes Hunt Chavis Editor Vernon Hazel Lowry Assistant and Acting Editor Archie Oxendine Business Manager Fred Lowry Advertising Manager Harold W. NEWS With the coming of the school year 1947-48, the P.S.C. News became an official part of the college life at P.S.C. All students look forward, with anticipation, t o the publication of their own publication, which contains much that is highly edu- cational, along with the lighter side of college life. The News gives students in English and Journalism practical work in connection with their theoretical courses. From our staff will come the writers of news, for our schools and communities, as they go out into the workaday world. 37 THE COLLEGE LIBRARY The Pembroke State College Library now has a total of over 16,000 volumes. Of these 180 are bound magazines, such as: Atlantic Monthly, Current History. Elude. Grade Teacher. Harper ' s Magazine, Journal of Home Economics, Life. Magazine Digest, Musical America, National Geographic, Parent ' s Magazine. Reader ' s Digest, Science Di- gest, State Magazine and Time, which make very valuable reference material for recent events. It receives around 135 weekly or monthly magazines and seven daily or weekly newspapers. Since the stack rooms and reading room are so crowded, the students and faculty are eagerly awaiting the completion of the new library quarters. The library staff consists of Miss Carrie Lee Jacobs, Assistant Librarian and Secretary; and three Student Assistants: Mrs. Jessie Lee Locklear and Miss Lillian Tene Locklear, class of 1949: and Miss Joyce Jacobs, class of 1952; in addition to the librarian, Miss Marjorie Kanable. 38 ATHLETICS Jesse Oxendine Moland Strickland FOOTBALL CAPTAINS Jesse and Moland have now acted as co- eaptains of the Pembroke Braves for two years and both have more years of eligibility ahead. TOMMIE DIAL Tommie is the only member of the Braves who is graduating this year and his spirited play will be missed in coming years. 39 Kneeling: Caswell Decse. FOOTBALL SQUAD The schedule of the P.S.C. Braves included 10 games, the largest number of games ever to be played by the Brave team. Although we won only four games con- sidering the number of freshmen on the squad, we are proud of the type of ball the boys played. No group of boys ever worked any harder and were more willing to learn than this group of boys; for that we are proud and are looking forward to 1949 for bigger and better things from the football players at P.S.C. THE STARTIXG LIXE-UP 40 BASKETBALL The 1948-49 basketball squad at Pembroke State College is one of the best, if not the best team, ever to assemble at this school. The 1948-49 schedule lists a total of 32 games and 22 wins. They defeated such strong teams as Edwards Military Institute, Campbell College Jr., Atlantic Chris- tian College Freshmen, and 504 of Fort Bragg. SENIORS: Ronald H. Lowry, James H. Dial, Ho Howington. The only seniors on the team are Horace Howington, Jam;s H. Dial and Ronald Lowry. These seniors will be greatly missed next season because they have played such great ball for Pembroke State College. With the experience of some new players we shall look forward to another season. Sampson. GIRLS BASKETBALL This year ' s basketball team was the best t hat our college has produced, winning all but one of the games played. Only three seniors are graduating from the girls ' team and they will be missed when next basketball season rolls around. Elizabeth will be missed, as she is one of the best forwards who has come through our college. She has been accurate on both long and short shots. Lorraine is another forward who will be missed next year and Debra will be missed at guard, as her height gave her an advantage over any but the tallest of opponents. 43 CHEERLEADERS Joyce Jacobs Doris Jones, Adelaide Locklear, Ray Chavis, Mertice Jacobs tlizabeth Berry, Magenta Johnson. SHUFFLEBOARD Elizabeth Berry, Rencil Poe Locklear, Maitland Hunt, Archie Oxendi 44 BASEBALL BOYS ' BASEBALL. Sealed: Hardy H. Standing: Lindberg Martin (Manager), Leslie Locklear, Moland Strickland, Delton Ray Locklear, James H. Dial, Marvin Lowry, Ronald Lowry, Vernon Locklear, Farce Oxendine, Newman Oxendine, Horace Howington, Coach, James T. Sampson. Baseball should reach its peak this year. We have the best group of boys assembled that has ever come to P.S.G. We are looking forward to public support as it has been given in basketball. More games have been scheduled than has been the case in the past and we are looking to win most of them. GIRLS ' BASEBALL. Sealed: Sallie Dale Locklear, Pattie Oxendine, Mertice Jacobs, Doris Blanks, Adelaide Locklear, Estelle Sampson, Lorraine Burnett, Elizabeth Berry, Doris Hammonds, Trever Lee Stewart, Ruth Locklear, Carolyn Sampson. Standing: Effie Jane Locklear, Frances Stewart, Magdalene Chavis, Maitland Dimery, Doris Jones, Artie Mae Emanuel, Vanice Cum- mings, Lucy Belle Oxendine, Debra Jacobs, Annie Ruth Jacobs, Sara Catherine Locklear. As there is very little intercollegiate girls ' baseball, most of the girls ' games will be played against neighboring high schools and independent teams. We are looking forward to the best team yet. 45 GYMNASIUM ■MM ! 1 ' £ — - I to- - — V H to g 2 - T ' S B bo j 5  m 5 = K- 46 P.S.C. at work and at play 47 SUPERLATIVES Best All Around Ronald Lowry Adelaide Locklear Most Popular Magdalene Chavis Vernon Ray Thompson Most Attractive Estelle Sampson Delton R. A modern, well equipped science building is promised for the fall of the next college year, and at this writing the foundation and floors are in and the walls are going up. ART We are proud of our Fine and Industrial Arts department and the products that they have turned out have won in international competition. As we look to the future, we are proud of the fact that the department will get new and expanded quarters in the next year or two. Art. as a medium of expression is emphasized, as well as art as a profession. 50 HOME ECONOMICS The home economics department is taking on a new look, since moving to a new location. New equipment, in the form of a new dining room suite, modern electric sewing machine, electric mixer, and a modern type electric iron has been secured. More emphasis is being given to dress designing and tailoring, with the addition of the newer equipment. A style show is held each year, where students in the clothing classes exhibit the results of their year ' s work. We are looking forward to larger and more modern quarters in the near future and to a much expanded program in this area of college work. 51 TRADE SCHOOL In the fall of 1949, Pembroke State College, undertook the sponsorship of trade courses in the building trades, in conjunction with the Veterans Administration. These courses are six months in duration and those who complete the work satis- factorily are granted certificates of proficiency. SpflSjIH Miiii First row: Mrs. Eva Lowry, Mrs. Jessie B.
