RALPH DILLINGHAM WELLONS FOREWORD President ' s Messas We learn to do by doing, is an expression we hear very frequently in education circles. The staff of The Indianhead have done their work. They have learned how to produce an annual. But they have learned far more than that. They have gained for themselves an experience in doing a piece of work for the sake of doing that piece of work. This is life, for when one lives for the sake of living his realization is complete. We congratulate the staff on their work well done. THE FACULTY James A. KENNEDY We the members of the Senior Class of the year nineteen hundred and forty-eight, in searching diligently for a fitting person to whom to dedicate the contents of this year-book, decided unanimously to bestow this honor upon our beloved faculty member, who gave untiringly of his time and effort in making this yearbook, as well as Volume i and 1 1 possible. To Dr. Harold W. Kennedy, we humbly dedicate our beloved Indianhead. May it partially repay him for his cooperation and may it be a priceless souvenir for each of us, enfolding in its pages fond memories of the happiest days of our lives, SCIENCE There are two classroom-laboratories at Pembroke State College. One is used for Biology and Chemistry, the other for Physics and a variety of uses. These rooms are being equipped with more and better apparatus each year. Several students are majoring in the Sciences, and there are blue prints for a Science Building to replace these two classrooms. SCENES OF SCHOOL E. STUDENT COUNCIL Pembroke State College has organized its first Student Council. The purpose of the Council is to have a voice in campus activities and see that they are carried out. The main job the council is doing this year is writing a constitution for the Stu- dent association so that the association may begin its work next year when a new council is selected. 28 First row: Josephine Locklear, Editor; A. The motto Seek a Life Useful means that not only the members strive to be artists, but they endeavor to be worthy artists seeking the highest goal of any artist service. The Dramatic Club presents two three act plays and many one-act plays during the year. THE COLLEGE BAND The Department of Music at Pembroke State College has shown a marked growth in the last few years; until at present it occupies a very important place in the College. Its importance lies in its performance of educational functions and its provision for extra-curricular activities. The purposes of the Music Department are to give the students a more complete understanding of the science and art of music; and to prepare teachers of Public School Music. It also encourages all students to develop a taste for good Music. 32 VETERANS AND SOCIAL CLUBS The Veterans and Social Clubs meet once a week and are very active around the College campus. Each club offers entertainment for all the College students. V 33 B.S.I. COUNCIL First row, left to right: Eddie Hartrrove. Adelaide Locklear. Earlene Jacobs, Loraine Burnett. Earl Cummings. At the meeting each month, students participate in debates, plays, and forums. 35 THE PEMBROKE NEWS The Pembroke State College News is a young, but growing publication. The first edition came off the press in October 1947 and was published monthly the rest of the year. In January 1948. it grew to be a bi-monthly, and in the near future we hope it will be a weekly publication. The purpose of this paper, besides keeping the students informed on the differ- ent activities being held on the campus, is to give the students, who are interested in journalism, a chance to prove their journalistic abilities. It is sponsored by the Journalism Class but all members of the student body are eligible to take part in reporting the things of interest around the campus. The only requirement for becoming a member of the staff is that the Editor in Chief, and the departmental editors be Journalism students. The Commerce Department is very cooperative and does all the typing and stencil cutting. The P.S.C. News offers the students a chance to show their talents in writing, whether they be news articles or poems, essays or short stories. By doing this we have found that we have lots of hidden talent at P.S.C. THE STAFF Raymond Clark Editor in Chief Johnnie L. Locklear Art Editor Thomas Oxendine .... The College Library receives around 127 weekly or monthly magazines through purchase or gift and six daily or weekly newspapers. At present, the Library is about to outgrow the stack room added within the past two years. The problem now is where can the new books be placed until the library quarters in the new Administration Building are completed. This year, Miss Carrie Lee Jacobs has been added to the Library Staff as Secre- tary to the Librarian. In addition, there are three student assistants: Miss Earlene Jacobs, Miss Adelaide Locklear, and Miss Lillian Tene Locklear. 38 ATHLETICS Jesse Oxendine Moland Strickland FOOTBALL CAPTAINS 39 FOOTBALL This is the first year that football has really gotten underway at P.S.C. The squad made a much better showing than the scores indicated, and the boys are to be congratulated for their fine work. To choose outstanding players is a somewhat difficult proposition. To mention a few. we would like to commend the following men in the line: A. G. Spaulding. Henry Ford Lowry. and Will Goins: in the backfield. it was Jesse Oxendine. Moland Strickland, and Marvin Lowry. The 1947 football squad was privileged to play in three different states. Georgia, and Alabama as well as North Carolina. As a result of these trips 1948 should produce a much stronger Pembroke State College team. 40 FOOTBALL First row, left to right: Stanton Locklear, Manager- A. G. BASKETBALL Basketball, the favored sport at P.S.C. furnished the local fans with many thrills throughout the season, but none surpassed the equaling of scores with Presbyterian Junior College. Having lost to them in the first game of the season 34-29, on February 7, Pembroke was on the big end of a 42-34 score. The team played sixteen games and broke about even on wins. Only one Senior, Tom Oxendine, Jr., forward, will be lost upon graduation, leaving a considerable nucleus for the season of ' 49. 13 Z. £s iji:z WINTER RECREATION 44 m 1:r mk Fi ' rji roa;, o rtgAj; Margaret Locklear, Gearldene Hammonds, Josephine Locklear, Elizabeth Berry, Lorraine Burette, Phoda Jacobs. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL The 1947-48 Girl ' s Basketball team was one of the strongest ever produced at Pembroke State College. The Girls under the direction of Coach J. T. Sampson won all their games but one, which was lost to Wingate by a score of 32-26. The girls are to be congratulated for their fine work. Earlene Jacobs is the only senior on the Squad to be lost by graduation and we are looking forward to another year of success with this squad. As a reward for their fine work the girls will be awarded sweaters and letters or the first time in the history of the school. 45 CHEER LEADERS . Irti lo right: Madge Black. Most of the men from the 1947 squad will be back this year. Among the out- standing will be: Jim Dial, Marvin Lowry, Horace Howington, James A. Jones, and Walter Locklear. 47 GYJLVISII ' .M The College Gymnasium, a spacious building, modern in all details, was erected during the session of 1938-59 by .he Public Works Administration. This building has a seating capacity of one thousand persons, and meets all re- quirements for indoor athletic sports and classes in physical education. It contains dressing rooms, showers, and lockers, for men and women. At this time students, faculty members, and alumni assembled in the College Dining Hall for a traditional Thanksgiving feast and an evening of fun and frolic with entertainment provided by all-student talent. On this occassion the alumni are welcomed back to their alma mater; and students and faculty members are given a chance to become better acquainted. 53 SCENES FROM THE FAIR This year Pembroke put on its first Robeson County Fair which was held at Pembroke State College. The Gym served as an exhibit house for all the Com- mercial. Safety, Handwork. Home Canning;, and Floral booths. The Ball Park served as an exhibit grounds for the livestock. This will be an annual affair at Pembroke State College. 54 FINE ARTS Fine Arts teaches us the relationships of line, color and form in such a way that we appreciate the niceties of life. Our study takes us through nature, in the form of plants, animals, landscapes and the human figure. CRAFTS In crafts, we learn block printing, stencil work, metal work, braiding, etc., The most fascinating part of crafts, is that of weaving on the six large looms. The products range from rugs, through dress materials, curtains, and baby blankets. Pottery work is in its infancy, but will increase- rapidly, now that we have a new electric kiln. 55 KI G A D QIEE 56 Greetings from Fairmont, the Old Reliable, THE BIG TOBACCO CENTER OF THE BORDER BELT Season Sales Pounds 1946 51,957,870 1947 47,855,698 1948 Our Goal is 50 Million Pounds Average $51.29 $43.71 FAIRMONT TOBACCO MARKET C. C. £ J- i ring the next six years, half a million leach- ing positions will be available in the United States. Thousands of men and women are needed to replace inadequately prepared teach- ers now in the schools, to fill the vacancies caused by normal turnover, and to meet the needs of the five million additional children born during wartime. There is a need for ele- mentary and high school teachers, college in- structors, principals, superintendents, and edu- cational specialists of every kind. Now you know the law of supply and de- mand. When your kind of training and abilii are needed, offers for it are made more and more attractive. That is what ' s happening in the teaching pro- fession. Many communities are taking steps to improve their local school conditions— some are granting salary increases — some states are establishing definite minimum salaries for teachers. The ability to teach is a special gift, a valued talent, and no profession provides greater per- sonal satisfaction than teaching. If you are a born teacher — make your decision now to join this honored profession. For Our Teach ers Mold Our Nation ' s Future. and America ' s future has need of you.
