He admitted that he might have had a better record in college if he had seen that he must more often. I have known other students who found it easy to do their best at all times, even without any compulsion. The staff that has produced the 1947 Indianhead has felt no compulsion to give long hours to the work. Nevertheless, each one has done his best. Each one has gone the second mile. We salute the staff and we commend their loyalty, their stead- fastness, and their zeal. DR. RALPH DILLINGHAM WELLONS Dedication C 5- We the members of the Senior Class of the year nineteen hundred and forty-seven, in searching diligently for a fitting organization to which to dedicate the contents of this yearbook, decided unanimously to bestow this honor upon our beloved sister-class. To the Junior Class, whose great responsibility and privilege, will be the publishing of the 1947-48 yearbook, we humbly dedicate our beloved Indianhead. May it serve as a beacon, in the night, to guide them to success and ultimate victory. Ransom Wilkins 15 Senior ClaZA J4Utory, Four years ago a goodly number of Freshmen came to Pembroke State College to enter into its atmosphere for a term of years, which looked to them, at that time, a century. But soon came the realization that college days pass only too quickly. We came through the Freshmen year victorious and entered into the Sophomore year with decreased numbers but unmolested by the upper- classmen, learned the ways of the world by exp erience. Decreasing every year but now the class of ' 47 will boast not quantity but quality. So-long college days, may we always live up to your crown of success. 1 1 III! 1 1 1 II 1 1 I 1 III 1 1 I 1 , ' — M N l 16 1TV. junior ClaA£ Officer Jason B. Lowry President James A. The Baptist Student Union is the connecting link between the college and the twenty-six missionary Baptist churches in Robeson County: it also includes members of the Free Will Baptist and several members of the Brethren. Any one may ioin the B.S.U. who so desires. The B.S.U. encourages its members to attend the State B.S.U. conventions where they receive new ideas to carry back to their local churches. The B.S.U. ' s aim is to help the Christian student to become better trained Christian leaders, and to help win the lost souls on the campus to Christ. The B.S.U. sponsors several religious activities including vesper services and prayer meetings. The B.S.U. sponsors several Bible discussions. These discussions help one to get a better understanding of the Bible. 34 Pontiac society. First row, left to right: Earlene Jacobs, Lillian Tene Locklear, Louise S. Locklear, Governor R. Barnes. It is a part of the State. National, and World Student Movement. Students attended the State Fall Retreat and the Student Conference at Greensboro this year and may go to Lake Junaluska in June. , The Wesley Foundation works with the B.S.U. in sponsoring several projects: The Pre-bchool Retreat collecting clothing for Europe; a weekly Vesper Service, and raising money ior the World Student Service Fund. In addition, the Wesley Foundation is donating money to the Methodist Student Fund and helping other colleges in North Carolina send a student in India to a Theological Seminary. 37 y mna ium The College Gymnasium is a well Equipped building, erected in 1938-39 by the Public Work Administration. This building meets the require- ments for indoor athletic sports and physical education classes. We are proud of the seating capacity as well as the dressing rooms, showers, and lockers, for men and women. Each year an annual Bas- ketball Tournament is held by all the Indian High Schools of this County. cAthleticb 38 Mi football September 1946, marked the beginning of intercollegiate football at Pembroke State College. The lack of equipment and a schedule prevented the team from playing more than five games. Nevertheless, the boys showed promise of strength in the future. Veterans will form the nucleous of the 1947 squad. As there was only one senior on the starting line-up, graduation will not affect the present status of the team too greatly. The surrounding high schools are also expected to send a considerable number of likely prospects next fall. All of which points to a larger and better team for 1947. 39 + r fw â–  FOOTBALL SQUAD First row. left to right: Talmage Locklear, Danzer Locklear, William E. Oxendine, A. G. While the team lost a considerable number of the games in the beginning of the year the spectators always saw a good game. Lack of experience accounted for several defeats early in the season; the team improved vastly, and won most of their latter games. With as many as fifteen men out for the team, competition has been an outstanding factor in developing the team. Graduation claims Robert McGirt and Clyde Locklear; both have played good ball for the team. Their loss will be felt, but reserve strength is expected next fall. Through the fine cooperation of the townspeople and the students and the efforts of coach J. T. Sampson, much equipment has been bought for the teams. The men ' s basketball team received new suits, and the football team was also outfitted this year. 41 VarHty JSa hetball First row. leit to right: Clyde Locklear, William E. Oxendine. Robert McGirt. QirU (Basketball Great interest was shown by the girl in basketball as about twenty came out for practice. Lack of college girls teams necessitated playing several high school games — of which all games were won except one. The girls had games scheduled with Campbell College and Pfeiffer Junior Colleges. The girls are proud possessors of new suits and next year it is anticipated that a full schedule with colleges can be obtained. - 43 First row, left to right: Walter Locklear, Talmage Locklear.
