C. Pernfarok. St . ... ;.-,(• Library f?4 Editor-in-Chief GLADYS OXEiVDINE Business Manager THEODORE MAYNOR Foreword THE STARTING of a tradition is an easy matter. The carrying on of a tradition sometimes entails labor that sink- to the level of drudgery. Happy i that institution that has in its student body a group of individuals who can make tradition maintenance a service of joy rather than drudgery. e congratulate the members of the Editorial Board of the 1916 Indianhead on their having made their labor a joyful service. R. D. Wellons, President. i Pino Walk Poplar Lane SNAPSHOTS SNAPSHOTS Dedication IN THIS, our first year of peace, following the greatest war of all time; it is fitting that we dedicate these pages to the memory of those who have attended our College and have also served our counry on the seas, on land, under the seas, and in the air. in JWemoriam WE HAVE not felt the Hand of War very heavily upon our Alma Mater, for that we can be thankful. Pembroke State ' s sons have answered the call of duty sounded by their country, and they have responded nobly. Some of her number will never return and it is in com- memoration of them that we dedicate these pages. These gallant ones died that we might live and that freedom might live with us. It is our solemn pledge to keep faith with each one of them and to prove ourselves worthy of their sacrifice. The Col- lege Library subscribes for over 100 weekly or monthly magazines and six daily or weekly newspapers. The Library has grown so much the past year that an extension had to be added to its stack rooms. On the Staff, in addition to the Librarian, are three Student Assistants: Miss Etha Cumming-. Miss Gladys Oxendine. and Miss Pearlie Locklear. 28 SCIENCE There are two classroom-laboratories at Pembroke State College. One is used for Biology and Chemistry, the other for Physics and a variety of uses. These rooms are being equipped with more and better apparatus each year. Several students are majoring in the Sciences, and there are blue prints for a Science Building to replace these two classrooms. At present. Johnny Lee Locklear is the One and Only Laboratory Assistant. Next year two should be needed. This picture shows part of Room 3, used for Biolojy and Chemistry. COMMERCE The Commercial Department of the College offers courses in business to students who wish to make Business a Career, or to those wishing it as an aid in other fields or for personal use. In addition to a knowledge of Business facts, the aim of the course is practical training in business methods. Some of the subjects offered are: Typing, Bookkeeping, Shorthand, Business English, and Business Organization. 29 FINE ARTS Fine Arts leaches us the relationships of line, color and form in such a way that we appreciate the niceties of life. We learn through different med ia in two and three dimensions. Our study takes us through nature, in the form of plants, animal-, landscapes and the human figure. CRAFTS In crafts, we learn block printing, stencil work, metal work, braiding, etc. Tlie most fascinating part of crafts, is that of weaving on the six large looms. The products range from rugs, through dress materials, curtains, and baby blankets. Pottery work is in its infancy but will increase rapidly, nun that we have a new electric kiln. The year of 1945-46 has seen an increase in the growth of the art department to where it is necessary to have a sludenl assistant. 30 Orchestra MUSICAL ACTIVITIES The Department of Music at Pembroke State College has shown a marked growth in the last few years; until at present it occupies a very important place in the College. Its importance lies in its performance of educational functions and its provision for extra-curricular activities. The purposes of the Music Department are to give the students a more complete understanding of the science and art of music; and to prepare teachers of Public School Music. It also encourages all students to develop a taste for good music. An Artist Series is sponsored each year by Pembroke State bringing to the Campus outstanding Artists of Instrumental and vocal music. In addition Faculty and Student Recitals are given each year. 31 r STRI G Ql YRTET The Mring Quartet has entertained at several formal teas held on the campus and appeared on the commencement program of 1945 held in the college auditorium. COLLEGE BAM) Newly organized on the Campus is the College Band which appeared at the basket- ball aames during the 1945-46 ?eason. 32 GliAi Pprn Kroi e State C Heg« Library Mi K to VETERANS CLUB First tow, left to right: James H. Basketball at Pembroke State College started its postwar climb this year and promises much in the future. The team this year started as almost a complete veteran team; but as the season progressed the freshmen and the returning veterans, who had played in past years, changed the complexion of the team. Competition for places on the team became keen for the first time in four years. Next year ' s basketball team should show more promise than this team, as all who were playing at the close of the season, with the exception of Danford Dial and those who will be entering the Armed Services will be here to answer the starting whistle next year. The regular season was very successful, from the won-and-lost point of view, as the team developed a habit of winning games in the last minute or two. The team won seven of its regular season games, most of them by narrow margins. m Score Score Score Score Pembroke 39 Hamlet All-Stars 20 Pembroke 26 Gardner-Webb 24 Pembroke 26 Gardner- Webb 19 Pembroke 34 Campbell Junior College 32 Pembroke 32 Hamlet All-Stars 28 Pembroke 21 Ivanhoe All-Stars 27 Pembroke 31 Ivanhoe All-Stars 28 Pembroke 38 Campbell Junior College 35 43 GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Front row: Christine Roberts, Trudy Bullard. THE WD NOW It is a far crv from the two-story building of 1887. with out cue instructor, to the present-day college with its eighteen faculty members and its student body of youth and tho;e who are not so young, these returning from the war and coming back for further training. The story of the progress of Pembroke State College might well be called the saga of Indian education in eastern North Carolina. Its stur is the story of progress from the school that started as a normal school of practically beginners level to that of the present when a large number of students are taking adyantage of the prvilege of finishing a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degTee in a number of .Major areas. From a one-acre campus, with a two-room building, the mechanical assets of the college have increased to that of eleven buildings and residences, scattered oyer a thirty-five acre campus. Pem- broke State College boasts of one of the finest gymnasiums in the Carolinas. A baseball park with bleachers to seat 400 is another asset of note, in this clime where baseball may be played from April through November. It is never too wet. unless it is raining at game time. Other spots of interest are the rows of Poplars. Long leaf pines, and another of magnolias. To vou who have seen the virgin pine back of main, we cannot add words to enhance their beauty and to those of vou who have not had this experience, it would be difficult for us to describe their grandeur in mere words. You may get some idea as to their beauty by looking at the pictures in this book, but let us add a few words in a feeble attempt to give you the feeling that one gets as he sees these trees for the first time. One feels as little as the ant feels when he sees man ' s foot falling gentl) toward the earth, with his small body in the middle. One feels that man ' s efforts at descrip- tion and accomplishment and beggared by this creation of the master hand that shaped the universe. All man ' s efforts to make things of symmetrical form and his efforts at creating things of beauty seem but feeble as one gazes upon these majestic giants of the forest. One feels that he has shrunk a little in stature when gazing at these giants without limbs until they reach a majestic height abo e the earth. 34 1946 Indianhead Staff GLADYS U J: IM S Editor THEODORE MAY NOR Business Manager HELEN MAYNOR Assistant Editor DR.
