The cool weather and hard work went together at camp to mold the boys into a smooth working powerful team. Thanks to this great opportunity. the Raiders were ready and waiting for their first game of the season against Redemptorist. With a touchdown in each of the first three quarters, the Raiders captured their first victory of the season against Redemptorist. Buddy Adel passed to Captain Meigs Jones for the first Pem-Day touchdown and KiteU Singleton and Ken Phifer acounted for the rest of the Raider scoring. The Raider defense was outstanding throughout the game as the final score was 18 to 0. All agreed that Pem-Day had a team to watch this new season. In their second outing of the season the Raiders avenged last yearls loss to Olathe by defeating them 31 - 9. Crichton Singleton led the Pem-Day attack, scoring three touchdowns, one on a fifty-six yard run. Bob Wallace and Kirk 0,Dell each scored on long runs. Wallace went ninety-seven yards, and OiDell went eighty-five. The Raider defense was again strong. holding Olathe to only 116 yards total gain. Bob Wallace and Ken Phifer each scored two touchdowns and Crichton Singleton scored one. The Raider defense was outstanding in holding the strong Burroughs single wing attack to one touchdown. Meigs Jones, Raider captain. was outstanding at his linebacker position throughout the game. The final score was 33-6. In their next game, a fumbling Pem-Day eleven was defeated by Codasco 19-T. The Raiders had several good opportunities to score but fumbled. and long runs by Codasco backs and ends put the game out of reach. The lone Raider touchdown came on a pass from Buddy Adel to Brook Bartlett. In their final game of the season, the Raiders met a powerful Rockhurst team. From the start it was obvious that the team was out-manned but they put up a good battle and held the Hawklets to one touchdown in the second half. The final score was 40-O. All the Raiders agreed that Rockhurst was the best team they played all year. Thus the Raiders finished the season with a good record of five wins and three losses. Everyone is looking forward to a good season next year as five lettermen are returning. These underclassmen, led by Ken Phifer, next year's captain. will probably be the nucleus of next year's team. The boys respon- sible for this great achievement are Captain Warren McCarty, Bryant Barnes, Bob Markham, Meigs jones, and Buddy Adel who rounded out the first team. Backing up the starters were Bob Wallace, Buzzy Katz, Terry Lerner, Ed Siebert, Rollie Nofsinger, Dave Smith, and Ken Phifer. The Raiders started quickly by smashing Northtown 65-29. They then went to the Redemptorist Invitational tourney and won it by whipping Kearney and Redemptorist. The Raiders followed this up by thumping Olathe and Central on successive nights. Next, they went to the North Kansas City tourney and whipped Park Hill and St. Mary's to advance to the finals. Playing without their Captain, Warren McCarty, the Big Red upset previously unbeaten William Chrisman to win. Hogan was the next victim of the unbeaten Raiders and from there the squad went to the Catholic League tournament and placed third, losing the first game of the year to Rockhurst in a triple overtime. After the holidays, the Raiders came back to whip Lillis, Glennon, Center, St. Joseph of Shawnee, and traveled to St. Louis to beat Country Day by a good margin. The following week, the team defeated Burroughs 60-49 and thus swept the St. Louis series. Rockhurst, who handed the team their first defeat, was easily defeated as were the Turner Bears and the Raytown Bluejays. The Raiders sustained their second loss to Southwest in an overtime, 66-64. Victories over Crain Valley and St. Agnes closed out the regular Season. BASKETBALL CALENDAR P. C. D. 65 N. K. C. 29 P. C. D. 80 Codasco 65 Redemptorist Tournament RC' D' John Buffoughs 49 P. C. With only a handful of lettermen returning from the previous year. it looked as though someone would have to come up with new' talent to fill the gaps or the team would suffer a disastrous season. ln four hoys was found this talent for a winning season. The two great discoveries of the year were Don KlcCreey'y and Terry' Lerner. Neither had been counted on. and hoth are now invaluable parts of the team. lioh Wallace. on loan from the hasehall team. runs lead-off on the 8231!-yard relay if there is not a baseball game. He is one of the fastest hoys on the team and a definite asset. Lastly. Cope Schellhorn. a freshman. came a lot faster than anyone hoped and is a member of the mile-relay. Others haye stepped up and filled the shoes left vacant hy graduation. Boys like George Kroh who is a consistent point maker in the hurdles and Stewart Gillmor. along with Wallace. Nlcflreevy and Lerner make up our half-mile relay team. Harold Kirkpatrick. another baseball player. liill Coetze. an exceptionally good freshman weight man. and many others are all good reasons why this track-team has made such a fine showing this year. When the State Outdoor meet rolled around. Mr. Campbell and a skeleton squad left for Columbia. There wasnit much hope of scoring many points. for several members of the team were unahle to go. The next day' many Pem-Day students were quite surprised on reading the morning paper that we had come in ninth. Pete Wolford won first place in the shot put and liroke the school record hy' a throw of 4-612 feet. Bryant Barnes tied for first in the high jump thus making a total of nine points altogether. The regular season got off to a fast start as Pem'Day romped over Grandview in a dual meet. The score was 86 to 32 with Pem-Day trackmen taking first in all but three events. The bright spot of the day came when Pete Wolford hroke his earlier throw to set a new school record. By getting the shot out 4T1fQ feet and by a 126-foot heave of the discus, Pete easily won first in both events. The fast pace was continued as Singleton won the high hurdles. Wallace the 100-yard dash. and Henry the mile-run. The 880-yard relay team added another first as the margin between the two teams increased. However. it was not all Pem-Day. Grandview took first in the 440 and 880-yard dashes. Then Kroh and Liepsner ran off with first and second in the low hurdles. This. plus the victory of the mile-relay team. put the meet on ice. This year the staff feels that it has met these requirements. and the '55 Raider is proof positive of their ahilitv. Jim Whittier. Editor-in-Chief. has put forth much effort on the '55 edition. as have Associate Edi- tors ,lohn Berkshire and Peter Puidak. Their ideas have all gone toward making the '55 hetter than ever. Also important on the editorial staff was Al Compton. who's efficiency in getting things done was very useful. Holi Wallace and john xv.-tech have likewise heen much appreciated for their efforts. Photography lfditor john Elliott and his associates. Ric Lyman and Peter Hoffstot. have provided much of the hook through their cameras. One can see their ability in the quality of the pictures. The duties of Circulation Manager Peter Story were to publi- N cize and distribute the book, as well as sell a record number of copies. He has done an excellent job and along with Duncan -HM MASSONI Business MUVYUQSV Edmiston. has been greatly appreciated. The Business Staff was run very efficiently by Jim Masson. Jim gathered last year's ad cuts and with them sold about 600 dollars worth of advertising during the summer. Bill Sullivan and John Rust also contributed greatly to the financial success of the book. The work of the rest of the staff was also heartily appreciated. In putting out a year book, it is necessary to have an adviser. Mr. Nault has given much of his time this year, as in the past. to help the staffs. Appreciation cannot be expressed for his advice and invaluable knowledge. Also. the staffs wish to thank Mr. Paul Robinson, printer and photographer. for his help and his patience as well as his generosity. The l955 Raider staffs hope that this edition meets the standards previously established, and that it will serve as a guide in the future. Standing, left to right: Bob Liepsner, Jim Wornall.
