.Ma fury the school prospered. On graduation day in 19-115, a sixty-three thousand dollar mortgage was hurned, and Pem-Day could look forward to more extensive improvements. Among 'these have been an extension on the dormitory for middle school classrooms, the modern Phillips Memorial Gymnasium, new wings on the lower school building, and finally in 1950 a home for the headmaster was completed. Plans for the future include remodeling the upper school building, new tennis courts, and improved parking facilities. Pembroke-Country Day School has always maintained a high academic standard. One need only look in the records to find that the majority of the graduates have done exception- ally well at the finest colleges and universities in the country. The school has been accredited by the North Central Association, the Missouri State Department of Education, and the Uni- versity of Missouri. Athletics and extra-curricular activities play a major role in campus life. Pem-Day is an independent school playing teams from both the lnter-scholastic and Catholic leagues. ln the athletic field the school has built and main- tained a fine reputation which in the last few years has included several state championship teams. In the extra-curricular field there are the two publications, the dramatic, science, photo- graphy, and glee clubs. Pembroke-Country Day students and faculty are well aware of the great progress that the school has made and that the reputation of being the leading prep school in the Mid-west must be maintained. By offering the finest available educational opportunities, the school feels that its reputation as a leader will con- tinue to grow. Housing the more than adequate athletic facilities, the Phillips Memorial Hall is the culmination of a long range development program. The Schuyler Ashley House provides a home away from home for the many out of town Pem-Day students. Page 7

After the merger of two schools, Pembroke and Country Day, the school has steadily developed to its present position-that of a leading prepara- tory school for boys inthe Mid-west. It was in 1910 that the problem of educa- tion for her three sons began to lie heavily on the mind of Mrs. A. Ross Hill. There was no place closer than the east coast which offered the educational opportunities which she de- sired. Through the inspiration and efforts of Mrs. Hill the Country Day School was founded. It was located at the corner of 61st and Wornall and was recognised as the third school of its type founded in the United States. ln 1911 the school was moved to 57th Street and Wornall Road, and three years later a twenty-two acre tract of land was obtained at the corner of 51st and Ward Parkway. The school moved to this location and remains there today. A gymnasium was built in 1918, a junior school building in 1922, and the hand- some vine-covered Schuyler Ashley dormitory was added in 1930. The Pembroke School was founded in 1925 by several teachers and students from the Country Day School. This school joined the older in 1933 to form Pembroke-Country Day School. Mr. Mitchell Froelicher, at his death in 1923, was succeeded by Mr. Maynard D. Brock who was acting headmaster in 1923-1924. He was followed by Mr. Charles Bradlee who served as head of the school until 1931. After serving for twelve years, Mr. Howard E. A. Jones resigned, and Mr. Bradford M. Kingman took over the position of headmaster. Under the excellent leadership of Mr. Kingman
