FROM FOOTPRINTS AND TIME Lives of great men all remand us W e can make our hoes subllme, And, departzng, leave behznd us Footprznts on the sands of tume Longfellow THE TIME OF OUR LIVES CLASS HISTORY Why the Pembroke Senuor Class has been thus way' They left theur foot rmts I would know theur footprunts anywhere-un Afruca or Elmo An these tracks were made by shoes worn un servuce and useful actuvt tues They come from the hugh school and lead out un the world From the markmgs here I note they have spent much tume un guvlng, not un receuvung Worn down at the heel, half soled shows how busy they were' fhese senuors walked furmly, showung they knew where they were goung Say folks Endung these footprunts brungs back memorues to me I am remunded of the good old tumes we had as students of thus htgh school I ll just have to tell you about our days here Oh, we had the tlme of our lives wush you had been here too Ftuzsr YEAH The Furst year of our hugh school was a gloruous one because ut marked a great change from that of junuor hugh There were 37 of us, all told and we came from a dufferent number of schools That made ut quute jolly and unterestung as ut gave us a chance to get ac quaunted wuth more new boys and gurls We selcted Alma Sanford resudent, James Suddeath, vuce presudent, Judy McRae, secretary, Dean urner treasurer, Jo Shaw, student councul member, and Mrs L W Allen, sponsor We jouned many dtlferent organuzatuons, here and there, and dud our best to make ourselves useful as well as ornamental and conspicuous un all the actuvutues We chose red and whute as our class colors, the red rose as our class flower, and Be good, Do good Make good' as our motto We dudnt make too much hustory as we were too busy watchung the clock But we had the time of our lives just beung new and greenuh' Oh, yes, we had some partues, one at our Presudents home, some hay rudes three plays, The Adorable Imp Never a dull Moment ' Watch out or Spooks and one bug trup hy, we went to our Capztal Csty and even spent the nught un Frankfort at the Capital Hotel Nobody trued to sleep except our chaperones, Mrs Glenn Banton and Mrs Allen and they mught as well not have trued But we were real good' Why another school party came un after we arruved and I guess they stayed u all nught for every tume we started down the hall we ran unto them' oor kuds just dudnt know any hotel etuquette-but we dud' And you should hear what happened to Elmer and Cappy whule we were un Frankfort They wanted to see the governor s mansuon, so they set out across the green, from the Caputol to the governor s mansuon When they approached The Mansuon, they saw a man out un the rose garden It was Governor Weatherby humself but they thought ut was a gardener They made up a bug tale about bemg second cousuns to the governors wufe ust to get unsude so they could tread where our dustunguushed gover nors ave trod and so they could see the portrauts of governors long gone Well they made ut but can you umagune how sheepush they looked when after tellung theur names and askung the name of the supposed gardener they found they had been talkung to Governor Lawrence Weatherby? gud they get goung' You can see we had the tzme of our lwe: makung ustory SECOND YEAR But tume flues and we all assed our subjects and became tenth graders Here we added Frank ason, Sue Moss, Barbara Perry, and Bull Raby but lost Gene Gulmer, Phyllxs Woosley Martha Shaw, Januce orman and James Foster Thus year we made Robert Roach, presudent, Anna Marue Heltsley vuce prestdent, Judy McRae, secretary, Dean Turner, treasurer, Elmer Fort student councul member and Mrs L W Allen, sponsor Our room mothers were Mrs Glenn Banton Mrs ummue McRae, Mrs W B Stump, Mrs D B Roach and Mrs eorge urner Most of these served as room mothers all through our four years They never forgot us on any specual day' QThey to gether wuth our other mothers fed us, quclted for us, baked for us we can never repay themlj Thus year we contunued our class partues, wuener roasts and hayrudes We had several sweet suxteen partues -one at my house, one at Nula Jean s and one at Alma s I remember Anna Marue gave one hayrude for us and dud we have fun' Thus year we resented the play Boardung House Reach Thus was even better than The Adorable Imp Anytume ut was noused around that our class was havung a play we had a packed house We were now no longer amateurs' That year we won over the Senuors un the Halloween Kmg and Queen Contest Mr Allen and the Senuors nearly passed out but anyway we had Queen Anna Marte and K1ng Joseph At the end of that year we argued as to where wed go on a class trup and Putty wanted to ay ust part of hus transportatuon fee because he would lack a couple o mu es rudung as far as the rest of us You know Putty' In short, ut all ended un our goung no place' But what was a day s trup un our young luvesl Nobody seemed to care' School was out and we looked forward to bemg Junuors when we returned un the fall Tnunn Yu-:Aa Funally we were Junuors and we really dud have a tume when we were un the eleventh grade Roach contunued as presudent, Alma Sanford was elected vuce presudent, Judy McRae, secretary, Dean Turner treasurer, oe Shaw, student councul member, and Mrs L W Allen, sponsor us year was another year of partues, slumber and otherwue I cant recall just how many we dud have We were stull hayrude crazy so Lynn McCaun gave us one un 10 below zero weather It would take too long to tell you all the fun we had on that bleak mght Thus year we agaun won the Kung and Queen contest Thus tume wuth ueen Judy and Kung Frank Thus was quute a set back to the poor enuors and Mrs Stokes But wun ut we would' We trued and won every contest and every honor that was guven No wonder the kuds began to call us :nooty Maybe we were! Page 20 Thus year we presented another of our famous comedues A Boy Named Beulah Jay Tobuas furnushed the comedy and we furnushed the Beulah, Robert Roach And oh yes, bemg Junuors, tradutuon decreed that we should entertaun the Senuors so we had a Cats and Bats party at Coach and Four Inn It was Halloween tume and we had cats, bats, ghosts and gobluns all about the room and we even served Wutches Brew, good Mexucan Chule and the Goblun s Favorute Dessert pecan pue wuth uce cream Thus was a gala affaur The Junuors and Semors seemed very close fruends Just as soon as our pocket books recovered from that feed we started plannung for the Junuor Sentor Banquet We had a Candyland Ban quet and although we started makmg our gym tnto a candy house two weeks ahead of tume stull we had candy canes, pennants, cones of cotton candy sugar plum trees to get set, un addutuon to blowung up hundreds of balloons at the last munute Why, we nearly moved the forests tn not to mentuon all the whfte washmg that had to be done That gym was Hlled wuth sweets from Roach s fudge and kusses to peppermunt uce cream, d the entrance to the room really looked luke a lacy bon bon box The banquet really met our expectatuons so we soon forgot our arduous labo Muss Ruves who never forgot us, helped us un all detauls of our banquet but especually un makmg our favors, styrofoam squares covered over un angel hatr, whuch held the tuny bottles of real French nectar Mrs Cowherd and her helpers prepared the food, some of our mothers served as hostesses, and the Sophomore boys Candyland Chefs, served t Who could forget the excutement as the Sophomore boys fell out? One even had to be carrued to the hosputal but ut wasnt our punch that caused ut Enough for the banquetll' When Easter came around we, as usual, hel ed un the Easter Sunrue Servlre, euther as members of the Glee Club, TA Club or Key Club But tume-that thuef soon stole our eleventh year and we would be Semors when we returned the next year Great were our plans' FOURTH YEAR Funally our senuor year arruved Folk have you ever been a senuor un hugh school? You say you have? Well then I know you wull enjoy hearung about the tume we had Good tumes were had by all, studyung takung part un sports and carryung on our other actuvutues We elected the followung oihcers to serve us Robert Roach presudent, Alpha Adams, vtce presudent, Judy McRae secretary, Dean Turner, treasurer, Anna Marue Heltsley, student councul member and Mrs L W Allen sponsor Thus was our year to be entertauned by the Junuors We were gtven a delughtful affaur at The Plaza on November lst The theme was Autumn Leaves We had a delughtful evenung, good food good en tertaunment, lots of fun Time was fleeting so, soon now ut would be Chrustmas, and we would have the Chrustmas Dlnner we had awauted for four years Funally sue received our unvutatuons from our Sponsor to a Chrustmas Dunner at 41 Inn on the evenung of December the 17th A turkey Dunner wtth all the trummungs, served un the atmosphere of holly, mtstletoe, candy canes, Santa and hus reundeer, a large Chrustmas tree provuded real holuday spurut We all had a good tume No speeches just eats and merrumentll Thus was our last Chrtstmas together and wuth a feeltng of nostalgua, yet a feelung of happuness, we gathered about our Chrustmas tree on the afternoon of December the twenty furst, to stng carols, and dustrubute our gufts Thus year, as each of the other years, we resented our sponsor wuth a Chrustmas Guft Each year we wondered w at to guve her For two years we presented her wuth Samsonute luggage but thus year there was no trouble un decudung for we knew she had lost her new Hamulton wrust watch We gave her a Bulova You should have seen her eyes sparkle and her mouth fly open As for plays we were all ready to guve The Daffy Dulls when a vurus caught up wuth our sponsor and took her out for a long sux weeks We were so lucky to get Mrs P M McCuuston as a substutute She worked so hard wuth us tryung to wun the PTA Druve and also the Halloween Kung and Queen Contest but Mrs Dudley and her luttle darlungs beat us by a few dollars I guess we were a luttle over confldent ' Whule I m talkun dollars, let me tell you we really worked to make our dollars We so d everythung from rat pouson to exqutsute luggage We had to have money to publush The Owl 1957 Edutuon, whuch was to cost more than any other edutuoru had cost and to make money for our Southern Tour We managed to get enough money for both We could hardly waut for our tour of the world s playground Floruda As Mr Ted Mack on the Gerutol Hour uts ut The land, that you cant umagune, unless you ve been there hose balmy breezes the gulf the ocean the sands' hes, we really dud make many footprunts on the sand: of that tume un Floruda Oh the trup was gloruous the longest trup any class from thus school has ever taken' And don t let me faul to mentuon our delucuous sea food dznner that our Sponsor gave us Mr and Mrs C W Johnson Mr and Mrs Allen and Bully accompanued us Oh I could tell you so many prznts ueve made at partues guven by our homeroom mothers, at tournaments, where our Senuor boys made up the enture team and won trophues, at Valentzne and St Patrick celebratuons guven us by our Sponsor All are good tumes that are now gone' We have left footpnnts on the sands of tumeflf And after four gloruous years we come to thus, Our Clos: Nught, when we 'wall continue to be up and doma-'wrth a heart or any fate :till arhlevmg stall pursmnq learnzng to labor and to watt Graduatuon lues ahead' A goal of twelve hard, yet enjoyable years Thus -we Ieaze behund us footprunts that some students forlorn even shupwrerked, .veelng may take heart agam JANE STUMP, Hustonan 1 , 1 . . . . . ,, , , .. . . . . . 1 ,, . . , 1 1 1 T ' 7 4 1 11 1, . . . . . . ,, ,, .
