Westward Ho UST AS THE HARDY pioneers of 1849 began their perilous trek to the West in search of gold, so . . . one hundred years later . . . the seniors of Pella High School began the last year of their perilous journey toward gradua- tion and fulfillment of scholastic requirements. Both pioneers and seniors faced perils, though not of the same type. Each had to have a certain kind of rugged- ness. Perhaps the modern senior would blanch with fear at the thought of facing a wilderness wherein lurked an unknown number of ferocious beasts and hostile In- dians, but imagine a gun-totin' pioneer struggling with one of Mr. Gr0endyke's physics exams! Throughout the four-year journey, P. H. S. seniors overcame many obstacles and pitfalls. Six-weeks' tests, pop quizzes, huge assignments Coccasionallylj, mornings-after-the-night-of-an-important-game, crushes and heart-breaks, sessions with Miss Gosselink, and homework headaches . . . these are what the successful graduate has overcome. The Forty-niners succeeded in passing through many dangers to receive their chance to obtain gold. Once they reached their Promised Land, the Forty-niners still had to strive diligently before fortune was theirs. So it is with the seniors. Once they have passed the four-year testing period, they have to use the knowledge and experience gained from those years to become successful in later life. Many of the 1849-ers succeeded-more power to the 1949-ers! 4
