He has faithfully and efiiciently served us in several capacities. As principal, he has devoted his time and efforts to improve the spir- itual and educational standards of our school. In the classroom we received rich benefit from his God-centered instruction. We ap- preciate the wise counsel he has given us, his willingness to help us in time of trouble, and the prayers he has offered in our behalf. He has been a Christian example and a sincere friend to us all. May God bless him for his devoted service to us and to our school. 8 Seniors oi '49 -' Farewell! Your brief period of high school training is over. Yes, looking back you can see now that it was briefg and as the distance back to your high school days lengthens in the years to come, your four years' stay at Pella Christian High School will be seen as one of the sweetest and most pleasant periods of your lives. Perhaps you feel relieved now that the hard work is over. That is understandable. There have been many difiicult lessons to learn and hard problems to master. Not everything has been pleasant. Yet, even so, in not very many months you will probably wish that you could live your high school days over once more. Perhaps even now as you reach the end of your high school days some of you may not be quite sure whether you are happy about it or not. Perhaps your heart is divided between gladness and sadness. x Yet you cannot remain here. This is a training place for bigger things. Your high school training looked forward beyond itself. As you leave us, may I remind you of the motto you have chosen: Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way. That's a good motto. Take it and live by it. Doing so, you cannot go wrong. Use your talents and gifts, your strength, yes, all that you are, for God and your Saviour. Make God's Word the Guide and Rule of your lifeg choose His paths as yours. Such a course will enable you to at- tain the greatest usefulness and to render the greatest possible service. Such a course will also prove to be the way of greatest contentment, blessedness and joy. We regret to see you leave us. We have enjoyed your fellowship during these swift-iiying four years. But now, farewell! May the Lord God bless you richly! May you serve Him gladly, devotedly, faithfully! Prove that you uttered no emp- ty words when you chose as your motto: Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way. F. M. Huizenga 9 Mrs. Ann Brouwers Gregg College Commercial Subjects Rev. F. M. X THE BOARD of Pella Christian High has passed through another year of intensive work. Few realize the hours spent in delibera- tion and the vast amount of work which confronts our Board. Their united efforts have greatly affected the future of the P. C. H. S. May God give them strength and courage to carry on their work. 12 S G A O M, J I 1 I r NN QLZM-W i i...-l Q- i-ii -.L- ....l ' ' --- ' +-N-.Qf .cfmf Class History September 3, 1945, marked a big day for 30 eager, though somewhat bewil- dered, newcomers to Pella Christian High School, the largest class in the history of the school! They met together that day to begin the long climb upward on the ladder of achievement. The seniors gave them a good send-off with a get-ac- quainted party the second week and the class of '49 was on its way. It wasn't long until one of the boys, Edward Ryken, realized that the climb was too hard and stepped down. The climb was again, resumed but three members, Gary De Graaf, Harriet De Koning, and a short time later, Albertha Ver Meer, happened to look up and were so startled to see how high the ladder was that they dropped out in despair. A few more steps brought the remaining 26 to the first landing and a year of schoolwork lay behind them. By the end of the summer, Henry Vande Kieft, Willard Bosveld, Don Sturs- ma, Thressa Swank, Gladys Den Besten, and Gerald Nieuwsma decided they liked vacation so well that they remained at the landing. But before the group started on the sophomore ladder they were joined by Judy Bouma, Evelyn De Bruin, Howard Groeinendyk, and Gertrude Ruter, who had decided to transfer to the P. C. H. lad er. With new courage, the 24 sophomores again started upward. The going was smooth until about the middle of the year. Then the ladder began to wobble and Herman and Margaret Tibboel and Joan Vos dropped off. It took a little work to get it steadied, but the year was finished with no more casualties. Vacation loomed ahead and offered a variety of things to do, such a great variety, in fact, that Gertrude Ruter, Gerald Van Wyngarden, and Ruth Vander Ark remained behind when schoolwork was again taken up. But the loss of these three was offset by the coming of Jeanette Beekhuizen and Elizabeth Kole, 3 year students, and Thelma Van Zee, who had transferred from Hancock, Minnesota. Now that they were among the rolls of the upper classmen, they set to work preparing for the Junior-Senior banquet. The big day was April 22 and the class of '49 used as their theme, Dreamland, The senior landing lay only a few steps higher up and it took but a little while to reach it. They were now dignified seniors! And even that wasn't all. Some- time during the year the new building would be ready, and the privilege of moving into it would also be enjoyed by the seniors, even if it were only a few months. With renewed energy, the climb was resumed, the number of class members having risen to 22. Farewell greetings were exchanged with Gerrit Steenhoek, who found it necessary to stay behind, but Margaret Rus, a 2 year student, and Dorothy Kaldenberg, who transferred from Pella High. School, were welcomed into the class. The senior year sailed smoothly by, and on February 8, one of their goals was realized. The move from the old to the new building was completed and the class of '49 was to have the honor of being the first class to graduate from it. May 26 was the crowning day of their high school career, and the class, hav- ing reached the top of the ladder of high school achievement, launched out into life, some to begin work, and others to go to college. The motto, which they had chosen as a guide to go out into life, expresses well that higher goal which now lies ahead: Thy Word our Law, Thy Paths our Chosen Way. 14 Senior Class Officers i From top: Judith Bouma, treasurerg Reuvena Dieleman, vice presidentg Evelyn De Bruin secretaryg Howard Groenendyk, president. THE CLASS OF 1950! One step further and they too will have attained the aim and goal of every high school student--gradu- ation. Graciously the seniors resign their positions which will be oc- cupied by this class of twenty-seven. The junior class has been a class of mystery. This is explained by the long-planned Junior-Senior Banquet, class rings, etc. Yet, even amidst their mystery they have been pleasant schoolmates. Activities, too, claimed their share of junior tribesmen. Seven have been active in basketball. The Annual Staff, Echo Staff, Hobby Club, and Choir also were represented well by junior delegates. 27 , --,Isf:E:2,:- ' ..':r:. '. e ,. Q X 1 N I 2? T if ,. ,R , S 92 ffs, . 9 I it , W, X .A... . .. THE SOPHOMORES have passed the halfway mark in high school. The class activities were of a minor nature, consisting of parties, hay-rides and miscellaneous material. In all fairness, they were a pleasant class to have as schoolmates. Each of its thirty-six members had his particular place at P. C. H. S. Extra-curricular activities also had their place in this class. QTHE FRESHMAN CLASS was one of which its fellow schoolmates were proud. Comprised of thirty-seven members, it was the largest class by the margin of one. Unusual for this traditionally green class, it held its own in the various activities. The other classmen had reason to ask how green they actually were. The first year at school has been quite an adventure for these boys and girls. It took alert, studious, and companionable people to make the grade. Their ability to fit was shown in their seven basket- ball participants, eight choir members and seven Hobby Club repre- sentatives. 35 Duane De Kock Beulah De Vries 1 1 Marcia De Young lris De Jong Lavonne films ':-5:2-2:2 3-1 4. .995 .139 Q Q Af? Although the season was not too successful on the basis of games Won, yet we feel that it has been a success in that we were always able to give our opponents good opposition. They boast a comparatively successful sea- son, having won a reasonable percentage of their games. The starting lineup for the year was made up of one freshman, Wilma Lourens, forwardg one sophomore, Elizabeth Rus, guardg one junior, Harriet Swank, forwardg and three seniors, Thelma Van Zee, forwardg and Reuvena Dieleman and Dorothy Kaldenberg, guards. Wilma Lourens was high point girl while Reuvena Dieleman, who was also captain this year, starred for the guards. Chorus has been added to the school curriculum as an ac- credited course. The all-girl chorus met each week on Tuesday and the all-boy chorus met on Thursday. Mrs. Roskamp has been our capable director. She introduced a number of new sacred and classical songs. Several numbers have been presented by the chorus as a group, individual groups, and solo- ists at meetings throughout the school year in connection with church or school activities. In the spring the choir made a tour of the vi- cinity giving concerts in the various churches. Special groups include a girls' sextet, a boys' quartet, and a mixed ensemble. 50 Student Council Standing: Ruth Kooi, Sec.-Treas.g John Van Zomeren, Lawrence Borst. ARLY IN THE YEAR the first meeting of the Student Council was held and the following were elected officers: Jeanette Beek- huizen, presidentg William Dieleman, vice presidentg and Ruth Kooi, secretary-treasurer. This year a new projector was purchased to aid in visual educa- tion at a cost of about 3350. The Council sponsored a paper drive to pay for this new equipment. Keith Nibbelink acted as chairman of the paper drive committee. The Student Council also sponsored an all-school party at Swim- ming Pool Park. A Christmas program was also given at which the faculty and Mr. Booy were given gifts. The Council took over the duties of the Student Chapel Commit- tee. Each week they arranged for these services which are conducted by the students. 51 The Echo Staff Back row: Beatrice Roose, Ruth Vroon, Ruth Kooi, Thelma Van Zee, Elizabeth Kole. HE SECOND YEAR of the publication of The Echo brought many changes to the school paper. First of all, there is the course in Journalism which serves as a guide for all Echo staffers. This class met three times per Week during the first semester and twice per week during the second semester. Mr. Kamp served as faculty advisor. The greatest impetus during the year was the Quill and Scroll Charter which was granted to The Echo early in November. The paper has also been increased in size. Special columns, features, and a sports section have been added. Subscriptions for The Echo were not sold this year. Certain issues were sold by the students while others were distributed among the congregations at large. Advertising was the chief source of fi- nances. L15100 was also received from the board and S50 from Mr. Andreas of Cedar Rapids. 52 The Hobby Club fri, ' . , . as as Back row: Donna Van Gorp, Arlene Jellema, Mr. John Kamp, sponsorg Jay Kuiper, Marvin Dieleman, Carl Vander Wal, Alvada Van Veldhuizen. The Hobby Club was organized to give students an opportunity to make, and show various avocational interests. The Club met when- ever possible on Wednesday evening with the members taking turns sewing refreshments. During the month of January a display was arranged in the show case of the old school building. Model racers, airplanes, boats, and other items were shown. Jet races were often held as a form of entertainment. New members are always welcome. 53 Annual Staff Left to right: Business Committee: Standing: Howard Groenendyk, Danny Van Gorp.
