Most new staff members have no idea how to begin designing a layout for the year- book. It is difficult to take a handful of pictures, to place them attractively on a spread, and to write a story to accompany the photographsg but this is the process that every staff member has to learn. The learning is tedious, but the result is well worth the effort. Members are chosen on the basis of scholastic average, leadership, and character. The Beta Club had many projects to earn money for scholarships for Pell High seniors. These included a Christmas bazaar, car wash, and pennant sale. Holding a blood drive for the Red Cross is also one of their projects. The National Beta Club holds a state-wide convention for Alabama Betas in early March of each year, and the Pell City Chapter has been active at these conventions. Beta Activities On March 1 and 2, the National Beta Club Convention was held at the Civic Center in Birmingham. Two chaperones, the four Beta Club Offi- cers, and six delegates attended this convention. They left P.C.H.S. Fri- day morning during first period and checked in at the Hyatt House where they stayed Friday night. They attended sessions in the Civic Cen- ter and wandered around Birmingham when they had free time. They all had a lot of fun, but came back to Pell City feeling very worn out from the past two days' activities. --19? 57 PPM-v Maw m , mn! olllll 'outa 'WDM mnvnmw .-awww W, I dlllluuullllanssnnnnngqpggqq ' , , President - Mike Bynum Secretary - Angie Humphreys kr! . At the beginning of the game we were tied 7-7, but the Eagles kicked a field goal, putting them in the lead 10-7. Later the Eagles made another touchdown, faked the kick, and passed for a two-point conversion, which made the score 18-7. Then the Mighty Panthers scored again but missed the extra point, making the socre 18-13. At the begin- ning of the fourth quarter the Eagles made another touchdown pushing the score to a frightening 25-13. Still the Panthers roared back with an exciting TD to put us only five points behind. Later recovering a fumble, Panthers reached the jacksonville nine yard line with only seven seconds to play. This upset was our third loss. The Panthers suffered their fourth loss of the season to Oxford. We were decimated by the Yellow jackets by a score of 33-6. Finally, our Homecoming game came and little did we know that we were going to beat one of the top teams in the state which was Oneonta. At the first half of the game they were ahead 14-O, but when the second half came we showed those Redskins who the ball players were. We beat those Injuns 17-14. Boy! The Thrill of Victory. The Pantheris pounce was sure and hard during the first two games. The team brought home a 57-55 victory over B. B. Comer and won by four points over Heflin. Ashville checked the Panthers by a 45-39 defeat. The Panthers were on the mend, how- ever. A twelve point victory over Wellborn helped their morale before the Mid-State Tournament. However a big loss to Oxford hurt. Then came Mid-State Tournament! Our first opponent was Shelby County. The Panthers went in claws bared, but were down by seven points at the half. However, the second half brought changes. The team, led by Roberson and Vincent, turned on the power and ripped off a victory. The final score was PCHS 69, Shelby County 61. The next game of the tourney was against a close neighbor, Vincent. The Team went in demanding a victory and won by five points. The last game of the tour- nament had everyone on edge. The Panthers fought hard, but could not pull away from powerful Montevallo. We were awarded second place after a score of 27 to 45. Ronnie Roberson and Wayne McCoy made All Mid-State Basketball team. 3 w ,Vf i 'K - I' Following the Mid-State Tournament, our boys seemed to be playing a see-saw game. Alternately, they won and lost. They suffered defeats from Sylacauga, Ashville, Oxford and Talledega County Training School by nine, nine, one and twenty points, respectively. A second victory over Heflin and a first over Etowah helped to smooth things over, A surprising upset over Childersburg proved the Panthers were still in the game. At the end of that game, PCI-IS led the astonished Tigers by five points. The next three games were played in the County Tourney in which PCHS won second place after a defeat by Ashville. The defeat did not get the Panther team down. They came back with a 71 to 53 win over B. B. Comer. The next game with Ragland set the school scoring record for this year. The Panthers sank 35 field goals and made good 13 free shots for a total of 83 points. During our second game with Childersburg, the Panther defense could not hold back the Tigers. Childers- burg won by one small point. The last three games in regular season play were victories for the Panther team. Etowah was ripped off 76 to 555 Ragland 81 to 53, and T. C. T. S. 76 to 72. Following regular season was the Area Tournament. The Panthers went in fired up and defeated Indian Springs 76 to 56. However, in a tough game against Childersburg, the Panthers lost their grip and were defeated 52 to 69. All in all PCHS had a winning season with 17 wins and 11 losses. The County Tournament began for PCHS with first round game with Springville. The Panthers were short on players and points, but pulled the game through with some fancy shooting during the fourth quarter. Springville was edged out 63 to 59. The high scorer was Wayne Robbins with 27 points. Next in line for the Panthers were the Ragland Devils. Rag- land was the only team in the County to beat Ashville, so far. The black-clad players went in fighting, but could not get a substantial lead. However, the pressure was put on during the fourth quarter and the Panthers won 64 to 59. Now our squad of seven players faced the championship game. The Panthers fought with determination and managed to lead by four points, beginning the fourth quarter. The final outcome was determined, however, during the last five seconds, when a free shot by Ashville put them three points ahead of a tired Pan- ther team. The final score was 64 to 67. The high scorers for PCHS were Wayne Robbins with 24 points and Wayne McCoy with 20 points. Wayne McCoy and Clifford Howard were named on the All-County team. The whole school throbs with sup- pressed excitement as petitions are signed, plays are discussed and whispered ideas are exchanged. There is no beginning and seem- ingly no end. Miss Homecoming 1975! This title was sought by thirty-one girls this year. After securing fifty signatures on a qualifying petition, each was definitely in the race. A general assembly allowed the student body to view the contestants and make their choices. Following a secret ballot election, the three finalists, who were amazingly all seniors, were announced. They were Miss Rita Andrews, Miss Ramona Yates, and Miss Cindy Owens. All three were given places of honor in the homecoming parade. Students talk to their friends, eat snacks, and go to club meetings, while others gather in the lunch room or outside to drink cokes and gab. Only too soon the bell rings to go to the third period class. if lrss , i had sw. ,,,, , ,127 V I V K -,Lx - r 'u r Ni ' V, ' N V, , I I 'f 1' l ff rw 1 ff Q A iv f . r If 0' I , H fi L ,cg ,3 it f J o . ,FT , Q, 'r Cheers! 162 --...Q C.- si .f- He was about this high! ix ' A Have a cigarette. The first senior high unit was introduced at Pell City High School in 1972!73. The response to this unit helped get additional ones in this age level for the county this academic year. The primary goal of Career Education is preparing young people to fit into the sec- ular world as both a contributor and a recipient. It is necessary to approach edu- cation in a way peculiar to each student. The traditional reading, 'riting and 'rith- meticv takes on a complex facade, BELOW: Ethella O'Neal, Vickie Phillips and Lenora Nobles K h f , . . Filmstrip, films, illustrated classics, games, practical work books, a reasonable facsimile of a grocery store, high interest paper-back books, phonograph records, tape recorders, office machines and field trips are some materials and methods used to accomplish the educa- tionalw objective. A guide is provided by the State Department of Education. Each school or system is to adopt and adapt according to needs and resources. The total student is kept in focus. XXXXXY 173 X -s..fif 41 XXX., XX True Grit PCHS students really have grit! After all the things they suffer through, they can still smile. Imagine! Smiling while you take a test, laughing when you're about to sit through an hour of boring speeches, wearing a grin while being antagonized by a pesky photographer, or being happy after running through a downpour to make club pic- tures. These are just a few of the miseries endured by stu- dents at Pell High, and they still keep on trucking! 41 ,f 'min ww 175 l A fob Well Done Our Pell City High Band of Gold has done a terrific job this year, and rnuch of their work has gone unnoticed. During july, the band worked on Tuesday and Thursday nightsg and when the hot month of August came, the band practiced everyday. They marched till their legs felt like dropping off, and then kept practicing till they knew their drills by heart. The band has given many concerts for the student body and for parents and friends. Mr. Causey has done an exceptional job this year with the band. We hope to keep Mr. Causey for many years to come. at . 44 5 5' ,., at ,ff A 47 - 1 1 .....,f UWA rf m ttw -, sf... Wm. , 'fir- 76 lL,NtCl Where The ACTIO Is Action is one word that is used often at PCHS. Wliether it be football practice, term papers. or just plain homework, students are always busy with some activity. Work and play are often intermingled in the library, at the games or in the gym. Teachers and students don't always agree on their work pro- gram, however. Undone homework and nonprepara- tion for tests have been the exasperation of many teachers. Students can't find time for such menial tasks when band practice, cheerleader tryeouts and various other activities are going on. Even so, they get by and everyone remains busy, busy, busy.
