RISER Box 487 Pell city, Alabama A JOB WITH AVONDALE IS A SPEC fThis editorial was written by J, Craig Smith, president of our company, for the Avondale Sun. We believe you will agree that a job with Avon- dale has much to offer if you are now ready to enter the business world.J OOO A job with Avondale is a special job. The people who do these jobs are special people. There is no doubt in my mind as to the a cc urac y of both of these statements. These are some of the reasons. I list the first three in the order of their importance. fly Every me m ber of our Retirement Trust has a vested interest in his or her job, This means that the individual cannot be involuntarily and perman- ently separated without adequate and provable cause. I am the one who must finally say whether the cause is adequate and provable. We also have an established and workable procedure which per- mits and encourages any individual who thinks he has been treated unfairly to bring the matter to my attention. It has been my policy in the past, and I will continue in the future, to resolve all reason- able doubt in favor of the individual. We have a degree of job security here second to none. Q25 We have agreed to pay the going wage in the industry for each job. After we have paid the going wage and met the other expenses of doing business, we set aside 5 per cent on the stockholders' invest- ment. Anything we earn above 5 per cent, we divide half and half between the company and the members of the Retirement Trust. The part of our profits whic h has gone to members of the Retire- ment Trust since our profit-sharing plan started totals 346, 652, 628, not counting the profit- sharing distribution which will be made for our year which will end August 31. In most years , this plan has resulted in our individual earnings being higher than those of any other textile employees in the world. Q31 We have a pension plan which provides that those persons who have been with the company twenty con- IAL JOB tinuous years or longer and who are still with thecom- pany when they reach age sixty-five can retire on 50 per cent of their ending pay, including basic Social Security and the annuity purchased by our deffered profit-sharing fund . Most hourly paid individuals who reture under this program will get more than 50 per cent. If we can continue to add to our deferred pro- fit-sharing fund , they willget substantially more. As long as the pension plan 1 is in effect, they cannot get less than 50 per cent unless they choose a plan that may make some payment to their beneficiaries or un- less they choose early retirement. Q41 We have a vacation- with-pay program which provides that Re t i r e m e n t Trust members with 1 service unit through 3 service units receive 2 per cent of their totalearnings as vacation pay. Mem- bers with 4 se rv ic e units through 18 service units receive 4 per cent, Members with 19 or more service units receive 6 per cent, This plan applies to hourly paid personnel only. Those on the salary roll receive an equivalent amount of time off. Q55 Avondale has six paid holidays for members of the Retirement Trust. These are the individual's birthday, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving , Christmas, and New Year's. Q65 Avondale Retirement Trust members receive full pay while serving on a jury, without deduction for the jury pay. CD Avond a le has a group hospital and surgical insurance policy. a substantial part of the expense of which is paid by the company, C81 The various mills close at staggered times dur- ing the summer so that the largest number of people may use Camp Helen, near Panama City on the Gulf coast.
