Edmund Strinden -Photo by Pelican Press 2-Dedication Almost all of us can identify with the feeling of scared hopelessness of being a “new seventh grader here in the Pelican Rapids High School. We can all remember the smiling encouragement given to us by this great man. This man courageously fought his own personal battles. He will not only be greatly missed by his family and friends, but also by the students and faculty who knew him. We, the 1987 Seniors, proudly dedicate our Shada to the wonderful memory of our assistant principal, Mr. C. Edmund Strinden. 14 c ou. efi c-cx 0 , iVLiLrA o , Crr tob-oc C-VO 2 3 Olt o fCr d2.cx.cl 4© b«- irvAf e. er «iLxcicxrrv 'T2i -p icAo xo ex ■ ortA rn e :cJr. xro a. sVcAcLam - or crcm c orsjr t exSLO. -Hxa Vulp oJLfi-o xrr cl beCfx bJl people co o 'vrvoJtc. rv £ 4ou Wnvr€. r«nc q xo OltyicI ca(Xr cA O er ' ° d v-e rvyvjuLcl tvftzre Dv- ariw xm t oWattc. 3 €xv - « Q 4oc v of 2.5. Foreign Exchange-3 One Last Look. . . Most people associate one last look as a last good-bye, givinq a fond farewell to good friends and remembering all the good times. One last look can also mean looking back and, yet, looking forward at the same time. Looking forward to a future bright with promise of new experiences and new excitements. A whole new world that we can only begin to dream about. The graduating class of 1987 can and will look back on their years here at the Pelican Rapids High School with a sweet sadness, knowing that looking back for one last look is not only a good-bye, but a hello to a whole new life. 4-Theme -Sarah Barton 6Y f 07 Ross Barringer Sarah Barton Mike Bergquist Dietmar Bethge Kim Brown Bret Burke Jerome Carlson Cindy Couture S(n:or,_, A Night To Remember— Forever The stars are bright, the moon aglow, people dancing, the music slow. Our last dance with friends we know. Our smiles shine as the music comes to an end. We say goodbye and remember tonight's dreams came true, and memories that'll last forever. This poem reflected the atmosphere of Friday, May 9th, 1986. The Junior class spent many long hours, in preparation for this exciting evening. The evening started with the banquet at Trinity where a deli- cious turkey dinner was served. Mark Kvare was the Master of Ceremonies and a program of reminiscing was presented by Mrs. Mary Ann Erickson, the guest speaker. The theme song was sung by Jenny Field and Jon Miller, accompanied by Sherry Treinen. Getting pictures taken and the Grand March were also exciting. Juniors, Seniors, and guests danced to the music of Casper, in a gym beautifully decorated in maroon, pink and silver. It was the year when life's door was flung open, where we entered as children and left as adults. But still, we look back with awe at all the things we've learned and accomplished over these past thirteen years. We remember our first day of kindergarten, when the highlight of our day was snack time , or nap time . As we moved on through gradeschool we faced many social and peer problems, like with whom we should jump rope at recess and getting sent to the principal's office. Of course, we could never forget the highlights of gradeschool seeing one of our classmates bite the head off a frog, and we remember the boys sliding down the big hill when it got muddy in the spring. Before we knew it we were faced with seventh grade, the big school, and the big kids. Our terrors included learning to unlock our lockers, getting lost, and having to do push-ups if we were late. Most of all, we looked up to the seniors and doubted if we would ever be in their shoes. Time flew quickly, and before we knew it we were in senior high, we were finally almost there! We remember our first dance, the football, volleyball, and basketball games. We could never forget our first kiss, our first car, and Mr. Matheson's stick. Senior year arrived, with it came having graduation pictures taken, seeing Becky crowned Homecoming Queen, planning careers, crown- ing our own Sweetheart King and Queen, and participating one last time in activities. Yes, as we looked back at all the memories and good or bad times we've spent together, we realized that our years at Pelican Rapids High School were years to cherish and love. As we reach the platform and grasp the diploma on May 29th, we will be filled with relief, happiness, and pride, but also sadness. We've worked long and hard to reach this day. Saying good-bye to all our friends will be a tearful and sad experience. It is the reality of growing up and of entering a new world of adulthood. We will cherish the memories and friends we've made here, which we will greatly miss. We, the class of 1987, taking one last look, will never forget the best years of our lives. Your friends. The Highlight for the bands this year was perhaps their moving into the long awaited new music facilities at mid-year. After spending several months in the loud and dusty weight room the move was a welcome relief. The Symphonic band made 28 pub- lic appearances throughout the school year including concerts, parades, con- tests, and providing music at athletic activities. The concert band per- formed at 4 concerts and provided music for the graduation ceremony. In addition to the appearances of the bands, many students performed during the year as soloists or in small groups at civic and church activities in the community and surrounding area. SAXOPHONES. SHADA EDITOR OVERWHELMED 'What do I get out of this, anyway? was Joni Anderson's question as she ex- pressed amazement at the amount of work involved in putting together the '87 Shada. The Shada staff began planning this Shada in May '86 when the theme One Last Look was chosen. In July, Joni Anderson and Sarah Barton attended a week of yearbook training sessions in Wahpeton. The real work began in September when the Senior color section was being worked on and ad sales were underway. Four official deadlines were met (on time) as the Shada staff took pictures, wrote copy, captions, and headlines, drew page lay-outs, typed, and revised, revised, and revised. Twenty-five to thirty pages of typed copy, photographs and page lay-outs were sent to California for each deadline. Joni's question was repeated several times during the year as she wondered why she had ever agreed to be editor. According to Ms. Ebersviller, it is difficult to even appreciate the work involved in producing a yearbook until one has actually been immersed in it. Special thanks go to everyone who helped the Staff in any way as well as to Cy Trygstad, Mel Zierke, and The Pelican Press. The Shada staff presents this book to you in hopes that it will represent One Last Look for the 86-87 year both now and in years to come. Once Upon a Mattress, a musical comedy based on the fair}' tale The Princess and the Pea debuted May 2, 1986 after thirty strenuous days of rehearsal. The play was conducted by Mrs. Mary Ann Erickson. Tim Bigelow played the desperate Prince Dauntless who was looking for a princess to marry. However, before he could marry a princess, she had to first meet the Queen's rigorous test and marrying Prince Dauntless. The play's cast was made up of about sixty high school students who really seemed to be enjoying themselves in the play. The musical played for three nights in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Changing a 1-8 win loss to a 6-4 overall record seemed unlikely, but Head Coach Kollar first instilled the theme You got to believe into the players the first meeting of the year, and it held over to the very last game. The first instance of this attitude showed up at the first football game against Dilworth. With only a minute left in the game, the Viking offense marched in for the touchdown and the win on a last-second pass from Troy Huseby to Greg Morgan. The Vikings gained two more wins against Crosby- Ironton and Wheaton; after games against Frazee, Mahnomen, and Breckenridge the record fell to 3-3. The homecoming victory against Barnesville marked the first time since 1977 that Pelican football beat Barnesville and the first time since 1983 that they won a homecoming game. The Vikings beat Perham and ended their regular season at 5-3. In playoffs, the Vikings beat Walker and were beaten by Breckenridge. Season's results included a 6-4 record, three men on the All conference Team (Greg Morgan, Bruce Sherbrooke, Troy Huseby), and three men on the Honorable Mention Squad (Mike Bergquist, Mike Follingstad, Jason McMillen). Virg Killar was named Coach of the Year and Greg Morgan was Most Valuable Defensive Lineman in the Conference. Team awards went to Morgan and Sherbrooke as '86 captains, Morgan as Most Valuable Basck, McMillen and Veazie as Most Valuable Line, Morgan and Huseby as Most Valuable Offensive Players, Sherbrooke as Most Valuable Defensive Player, and Most Improved Player was Daryl Pixley. They lost the match by only two points after winning the first two games. The Vikings' leadership came from captains Lori Klein and Beth Halbakken. At mid-season, the Vikings win-loss record was 6-5. Daryl Pix- ley accomplished his 60th career win, and Phu Ha had over 100 wins by the end of the season. In 1986 Phu Ha wrestled at the State level. Viking wrestlers set goals for themselves to win Districts and to send at least two or three wrestlers to State this year. At mid- season Coaches Harold Pork Chop Holt and Dean Translator Fox thought that Da- vid Seifert, Phu Ha, Daryl Pixley, and Steve O'Brien were competing very well and may be in the running for 1987 State competi- tion. One change that the wrestlers experienced this year was the addition of Daryl Tysdal as assistant coach. Good team spirit characterized the '87 girls' basketball team. Although it was not their winningest year (with a 3-7 record at the halfway point of the sea- son), Captain Beth Halbakken and team- mate Lori Klein thought that they were still able to maintain a good attitude. These two seniors stated that (at the season's midpoint) the Underwood game was their best so far. Four team members scored double-digit points and the final score was 58-43. Typical game goals were to make sixty percent of their free throws and to out-rebound the other team. On the line was a phrase frequently used by Mary Moenkedick in practice; when the team heard those words, they knew they would be running until they dropped. 1. Curt Hatle and Lori Dillon. 2.
