Celebrate the Memories For friends we'll ever be. And when you find you need someone. Come Celebrate the Memories with me. Sandra MacGregor We, the class of 1986, proudly dedicate our Shada to a woman who has been an important part of our lives. This woman has lent a helping hand and an encouraging word and smile to us here at P.R.H.S. In her duties as an aide, she works in the library, office, and the lunch line. We thank you for your concern and encourage you to continue your thoughtfulness and caring! The 1986 Shada is lovingly dedicated to Mrs. Margaret Lee! 3 Royal Court 1986 ROW 1: Annie B. Each day was designated with a special theme and students dressed accord- ingly. Monday, September 16, was Athletic Day. That evening the vol- leyball team won their game at Au- dubon. Dress-Up-Day and coronation were on Tuesday's agenda. Mr. Rex Haugen, homecoming speaker, en- couraged us to follow our dreams. Mistress of Ceremonies, Sheri King and Julie Walkin, entertained the audience with stories about the Queen candidates, Janice Haar- stick, J.J. Meder, and Jeanie Strom. Tension mounted as last years Queen, Tina Hunter, crowned Ja- nice Haarstick the 1985 Homecom- ing Queen. Wednesday was marked by Ce- lebrity Day. Many Senior girls dressed in togas to imitate Julius Caeser. Thursday's Nerd Day was followed by a home Volleyball match with Dilworth. Although our team lost, the cheering section of fans and Vikingmen main- tained its spirit with yells of Areeba. School spirit was demonstrated on Friday as students dressed in or- ange and black (Color Day) and prepared for the game during the hour long pepfest. The Vikings lost the football game to the Frazee Hornets, 29 to 8. Homecoming week came to an end as alumni, classmates, and guests danced to ''Music on Wheels. A few of these days were spent at home with a tummy ache, the chicken pox, or the dreaded flu, but for the most part our school days have been exciting, challenging and full of surprises. We have gained reading, writing and arithmetic. Even on our first day of school, we were given our most difficult assignment — the art of friendship. Throughout the years we have continued to build and add new friendships both in and out of school. Along with friendship, we have learned responsibility and how to think for ourselves, a feat not easily achieved. As everyone knows, in grade school life was a breeze. The only hassles were catching the bus and force feeding yourself at the lunch table. Once we began junior high, life changed drastically. We were now able to participate in all those activi- ties that the “big kids did. Pep fests, dances, sports, speech, FFA, FHA, and others, just to name a few, always took priority over our supposed studying time. As sophomores we were able to experience the excitement of the state basketball tournament in St. Paul. The beginning of our junior year started with a magazine drive and the receiving of our class rings. Our Prom, “When I'm With You , ended our junior year as we said good- bye to our senior buddies. Finally, ... a senior. Looking back we can remember how Scott Dutcher and Rick Bengtson became trees after ninth grade or how Rachelle Thorson and Sheri King used to be tomboys or how bearded Tim Bigelow could ever have been Tiny Tim. Yes, we've changed a bit but we're still the Class of '86. The robes, caps and diplomas will feel great but there will surely be come tears at the same time. We'll remember Trygstad's smile, Matheson's meter stick, Tabbut's laugh, Bredell's announcements with Viking pride is riding high today , the great cheering section at the volley- ball games, early morning gatherings at Perkins, Homecoming Queen Janice, Sweetheart Dance, and more. From the Class of '86, a great big thank you goes to all, to the teachers, administration, faculty, and underclassmen who have influenced, helped and befriended us for so many years. Mr. Kollar, banquet speaker, showed slides of great school day memories that happened through- out the years. The choral group did a fine job performing the theme song When I'm With You''. Ran- dy Bredell was master of Ceremo- nies. Members of Trinity ALCW prepared a ham dinner which was served by sophomores. Time and effort by the Juniors transformed the gym into a beauti- ful purple, lilac and ivory scene for the prom complete with a moun- tain mural and garden-decorated sitting area. The Grand March be- gan with a walk over a bridge and continued through the crowd of parents and spectators. It started out last summer when Mrs. Ebersviller, Janice Haarstick and Arlinda Emery took time to go to Yearbook camp at Whapeton. There we learned a lot of things and planned some changes on the book that we thought would enhance the book so that we'll always treasure it in years to come. We'd like to thank Zierke's Studio for all his help and the Pelican Press for the use of their photos. Also, Mr. Trygstad has given us a lot of extra help on some of our questions and developing and printing all of our pictures. A special thanks given to all the people who helped us sell ads this summer. We hope that you find this book of value and that you'll Celebrate the Memories with us. Speech is an extra-cirricular activity in which participants have the opportunity to enhance their speaking skills while simultaneously competing with other Minnesota students. Students compete in one of eleven categories throughout the season. Inter- pretative divisions include prose, poetry, drama, humarous, storytelling, creative expression, and extemp, reading. Puplic speaking events consists of great speech- es, oratory, discussion, and extemp, speaking. In February and March, participants compete at invitationals. At these prac- tice meets, each student enters 3 rounds of competition. At the end of each meet, winning students are awarded a ribbon or a trophy in his her respective cate- gory. During the latter part of March, par- ticipants compete in elimination tourna- ments, beginning with a local contest and working up to State. In May, speech students receive their earned certificates, medals, or letters. These honors are awarded according to points the partici- pant has earned during the season. The 1985 season was the first time any stu- dent could earned a letter in speech. Jon Miller and Tess Carlson were both named as second alternatives to State during the 1985 season in their respec- tive categories: Extemp, speaking and storytelling. Some of the highlights of the year were learning new blocking tech- niques like the Mickey Mouse and the Banana. The third place finish in District play, the M16 runs in August, and new run-through digging and rolling also helped to make the season a great one. Football ’85 The success of this season cannot be determined by wins and losses. The Vikes ended up with a 1 and 8 record but put up a good fight in each game. Their only win came against the big Crosby Ironton team when they shut them out 18-0. The Vikings' leadership came from captains Mike Forsgren, Jeff Booth, and Brian Jenson, as well as new head coach Virg Kollar and his assis- tant coaches. Football practice began on August 13,1985 with 38 players showing up. In the early going, the team worked on fundamentals like starting, stopping, stances, catching and blocking. Players went on to master their positions; the hard workouts also continued as the team was expected to master the art of Minnesota Morris and Hundreds of Hit Ems. Troy Huseby throws pass. As usual, they fired up the student body and the teams at pep-fests as well as games and meets. The cheerleaders did their best to help the teams create a super season, by brightening up the gymnasium with lots of orange and black signs and also decorat- ing the team's lockers. Some of the projects they had were learning new and interesting chants and floor cheers, planning pep-fests, and making a school song board that was painted by Susan Treinen. All the squads met for practice every Wednesday after school with their advisor, Suzanne Leabo. The cheerleaders did a great job showing their enthusiasm and pride for the Mighty Vikings!
