In the fall of 1972, scared but eager kindergartners took their first step towards becoming the Class of 1985. Along the way, many paths had to be walked and many bridges had to be crossed. Each year has brought new experiences and many memo- ries as we search for ourselves. Back then our main concerns were getting picked for gray duck and who to roll our rug out by for nap time. Our concerns may be different now, but our goal is realized for we are the Class of 1985. Since then we've made memories that we can reflect back on and either laugh, cry, or both. We remember .. . The sixth grade trip to Minneapolis . . Kim Estes running into a building down- town Minneapolis .. . Bombardiment . . . The terror of getting lost on our first day in the Big School . . . Junior High soc-hops . . . Your first kiss . Driving with Mr. Amundson and finally getting our driver's license . . Being in Senior High Going to dances with live bands . . . Football games ... Dragging main . Volley- ball games . . . Band and Vocal contests . . . Wrestling meets . . . Junior Magazine Drive . . . Gymnastics meets . . . Class rings . . . Basketball games . Going down to STATE and becoming the 1984 CLASS A BASKETBALL CHAMPS . . . Planning our perfect Prom, We've Got Tonight . . . Our Foreign Exchange Student from Bel- gium, Francoise . . . Track meets . . . and . . . Then our Senior Year . . Crowning Queen Tina . . . Kicking the Junior girls in the Powder Puff game to remain undefeat- ed . Meeting at Birkey's . . . Dressing up to celebrate Halloween Rowdy noon hours in the study hall . . . Sweetheart's, King Glen and Queen Kim and a memorable dance with Apollo . . . Skip Days . . . Cramming for finals .. Years of sharing friendships, laughter, smiles, tears and happiness . . and . . . May 31, 1985, our Graduation Day! We meet so many people But few, it seems to me, Enjoy as close a friendship As ours has grown to be, So with this heartfelt greeting, I want to tell you, too. I'm very thankful to have found A special friend like you. The years have gone fast and have left us with wonderful memories and friend- ships to cherish. However, the story that began in 1972 does not yet draw to a close once we have received our diplomas. We now have our own paths to follow and our own goals to achieve. We, the Class of 1985, wish to thank our friends, teachers, and parents for making the years at P.R.H.S. so memorable and wonderful. Also, we wish for our friends the best always! Class Colors Class Motto Maroon and Ivory We came to this place together, to learn, to grow, to share . . . Time and space may separate, but distance cannot come between us. Friends Always The Class of 1985 Class Flower Red Rose wwnfr After many months of planning, pomping. and preparation Prom 1984 had finally arrived! We all thought the pomping would never end, especially when each time we inserted a pomp we changed our mind. However, it sure looked great when it was all done. Now that all the work had been completed the night had come and it was time to relax and enjoy We've Got Tonight.” The inspiring talk given by guest speaker Mrs. Erickson at the banquet at Trinity Church, got the evening off to a wonderful start. Lori Field and Keith Seifert, accompanied by Dean Aamodt, did an excellent job singing our theme song We've Got Tonight. Upon entering the gym doors, you could see the hours of effort that had gone into completely transforming the high school gym into a mystic dream world. The gym was decorated in silver grey, pink and blue. The hours of dedicated work and planning had definitely been worth the end result, and the entire evening had truly been a night we'll all remember. 22 23 Chad Lisa Trevor Patti Paul Lori John Julie “Belgium She has brightened the halls this year, been everyone's friend, and has participated in volleyball and choir. She has made our last year at P.R.H.S. more enjoyable for everyone. We were honored to have with us this year our foreign exchange student (from Belgium) Francoise! Francoise stayed the first three months of her year long visit with the Ambrose Klinnert family. She then moved to the residence of Charles Kreckleberg, and finished her stay in Pelican Rapids with the Richard MacGregor family. Thank you Francoise for sharing your smiles and laughter with us. Thanks for making our senior year more enjoyable, we all will miss you when you leave. The basketball spirit filled the air and the electricity of the soon to come State Championship captured the town. Of the many loyal fans who ventured to the Cities, none were more distinguished than Ryan Ness and his What Nat Na. The main story of this trek begins with our incredible team. We all remember the terrific stunts of Pete Wohler, and the hypnotic moves of the entire team. However, when things got tight, we could all count on Pat Westby to make the miracle play. There was no prouder moment in Viking Basketball history than when Head Coach Rex Haugen cut the final string on the net in the St. Paul Civic Center. This was our finest hour, and we hope that one day in the near future we can make that trip again and recall our memories of the spring of 1984. 46 SPORTS Row 1: Al Siegle, Head Coach; Jeff Follingstad, Steve Honrud, Cary Haugrud, Darwin Johnson, Capt. Though finishing with a 3-6 overall record, four of the opponents were ranked in the top four teams of the state. The Vikings were captained by Darrin Kvam, Jim Lehn and Tim Rogelstad. They were given the dubious honor of leading their team twice against the Breckenridge Cowboys in an effort to stop the ultimate State Runner-up. Ail Heart O'Lakes Conference players receiving recognition were Darrin Kvam, Tim Rogelstad, and honorable mention going to Dave Rudie, Joel Gerdes and Jim Lehn. The girls basketball team was ex- cited for a successful season knowing that they would be getting a new bas- ketball coach, Mary Moenkedick. The season ended with a record of 10-8. The biggest thrill of the season was the District Tournament games. In overtime they defeated Hillcrest 36- 35; but lost to Frazee in a double over- time. However, the girls came back with high spirits to capture the third place in the District 23 Tournaments. They accomplished this goal by de- feating Underwood by 11. There is no greater thrill than an upset or a gold medal. The wrestler's mind is a complex mind capable of making many deci- sions. Should I eat this? Which move should I use? How can I make myself better? These are many of the ques- tions a wrestler asks himself. These questions may not sound important to you, but to a wrestler they are very important. Led under the co-captains Dave Rudie and Kevin O'Brien, the team's record for the season was 5-5. 58 Wrestling Row 1: Coach Erling Kelting, Lisa Baker, Jennifer Lynnes, Christine Schemen, Vicki Kwasniewski Row 2: Coach Nancy Johnson, Manager Haugrud, Nicole Ohman, Tina Berg Row 3: Lori Moses, Rhonda Gilbertson, Hally McGrand, Nancy Stoen Row 4: Michelle Maach, Josette Johnson, Heidi Neff, Nadine Scheleski, Cindy Martinson The gymnastics season was full of record setting high scores. Also, A special thanks to Mr. Trygstad and to let him know the hours in the dark room were well spent. We had many problems this year with the deadlines and also with pictures; because of this, we'd like to apologize to the underclassmen for not having as many candid shots of them as we should. We tried to capture the spe- cial moments of the school year, and we hope you will treasure them for a life- time. Franklin In the Spring of 1984 the Pelican Rapids Drama Club presented it's musical production of The Rob- ber Bridegroom . It seemed like one big hassle from the planning stages until the dress rehearsals. Howev- er, when the curtian opened and the show began, we all knew it was well worth the effort. The turnout for the two evening performances was excellent, and when the final curtian closed, amid the applause and camera clickery, we all knew that we had performed the best shows possible. Everyone had fun doing their own bit of acting, especially the townspeople who were trying to act like the brainless idiots of Rodney. Some, more than oth- ers, accomplished this and at times still act like the character they portrayed. Another fun part of the play was the prop work and design, in other words the box for Big Harp as all other props were the townspeople themselves. At the end of the play The Box was fully equipped with a portable stereo, padded cushions, and at least one six pack of Pepsi. From a naked Rosamund running around in the woods to a dead Salomie, our play had a lot to offer. The Pelican Rapids Club - it's not just a job it's an adventure. 77 Row 1: Kyle Haugrud, Brian Wickenheiser, Mike Rude, Matthew Sorum, Jody Hoef, Teresa Rudie, Emily Tims, Lisa Baker, Jennifer Lynnes, Christine Scheman.
