For only on the top can we see the whole view, can we see what we’ve done and what we can do, can we then have the vision to seek something new press on, and follow your dream. Amanda Bradley 2 A MAN TO LOOK UP TO “A true friend gives freely, advises justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, de- fends courageously, and continues a friend un- changeably.” We, the Class of 1983, wou Id like to dedicate this year’s Shada to a teacher, a coach, and advisor, and a true friend. He’s a man who has led us through our years at P.R.H.S., and helped to prepare us for the journey through life ahead of us. Even though he’s busy with coaching, teaching, and a new baby boy, he is always there to help our class with our many problems, small as they may be. The 1983 Shada is proudly dedicated to a fine man and a wonderful teacher, Mr. Virgil Kollar. dedication-3 , We meet so many people But few, it seems to me. Enjoy as close a friendship As ours has grown to be, So with this heartfelt greeting, I want to tell you, too, I’m very thankful to have found A special friend like you. 6 prom THE BEST OF TIMES After months of planning, pomping, and praying, Prom 1982 had finally arrived! Now that all the work had been completed the night had come and it was time to relax and enjoy “The Best Of Times.” The inspiring talk given by guest speaker Mr. Douglas at the banquet at Trinity Church got the evening off to a wonderful start. Tammy Pourrier, Wayne Carlson, and Jim Pederson did a great job with the music, performing for us the hit song “Leather and Lace.” Upon entering the gym doors, you could see the hours of effort that had gone into completely transforming the high school gym into a sparkling medieval castle. The hours of dedicated work and planning had definitely been worth the end result, and the entire evening had truly been “The Best Of Times.” THE 1982 ROYAL COURT 1st Row: Ria Elton, Tammy Pourrier, Queen Kay Tollefson, Kathy Jacobson, Justin Miller, 2nd Row: Karen Moen, David Sherbrooke, Tim Rustand, Carol Hexum, 3rd Row: Cary Haugrud, Patti Dillon, Bert Moen, Toinette Wickenheiser, Mike McArthur, Catharina Engstrom, 4th Row: Mike Morgan, Gary Larsen, Blaine Sherbrooke, Kevin Strom. And the winner is homecoming 9 10 homecoming FROM PRINCESS TO QUEEN From being chosen Homecoming Princess of 1971, to being crowned Homecoming Queen of 1982, Kay is the first princess ever to go on and also become the Homecoming Queen. The coronation was made even more memorable by the speech given by Mr. Aamodt inspiring us to make the most of our high school years. Each day was made special because of the participation of student and faculty in the days which included; Dress-Up Day, Physical Day, Grub and Wild Hair Day, Cowboy and Indian Day, and Color Day with prizes given out to the winners of each day. The Homecoming festivities began with the coronation on Monday night, while Tuesday night was topped off by a victory for the volleyball team followed by the annual bonfire. The excitement for Wednesday was the 8-0 win for the senior girls in the Powder Puff game to remain undefeated. The week ended perfectly with the victory for the football team over Staples with a 34-30 win. Following the victorious game was the Homecoming dance, the first dance of the year, with music by Wyzdom. homecoming 11 12 sweetheart SWEETHEARTS 1983 THE NEW SWEETHEART HEART DAYS This year at PRHS a new tradition. Sweetheart, was started. The week began with DressUp Day-Tuesday, Punk Day-Wednesday, Reverse Day- Thursday, and color Day-Friday. To get ready for the evening’s basketball game with Barnesville, an hour long afternoon pep fest was noted. Saturday afternoon was spent decorating the gym for the evening’s dance with music provided by The Plaids. Returning Sweetheart Royalty, King Wayne Carlson and Queen Terry Anderson had special honor of crowning two royal pairs for 1983: King Steve and Queen Pam, King Mark and Queen Diana. Sweetheart Week ended with Red and White Day on Monday with the distributing of Valentine’s flowers throughout the school. sweatheart 13 sports 15 Wave the Viking flag of victory Wave it to the sky. As usual, they fired up the student body and the teams , at pepfests as well as games and meets. Some of the projects they had were consessions at an auction, a carwash, and selling orange and black shakers to the fans. The cheerleaders bright- ened up the gymnasium with lots of orange and black signs and also decorated the lockers to help bring in a victory. All of the squads meet for practice every Wednesday after school with their advisor, Suzanne Leabo. Heading the squads this year as captains were Football and Basketball-Karen Moen, and Wrestling-Shari Olson. We ap- preciate their hard work and en- thusiasm they have given to the Mighty Vikings! cheerleaders 31 FAVORITE T.V. SHOWS: 1. Fame 2. “A” Team 3. Square Pegs FAVORITE SONGS 1. The Christmas Concert with all the chorus participating was an event well worth the time and effort put into preparing for it. A few of the choir members were chosen to form a new swing group which sang popular songs along with dance steps. Repre- senting Pelican in the music Festival were Bonnie Gresfrud, Linnea Forsgren, Catharina Engstrom, Gary Carlson, Tim Femling, Kari Ronningen, Mark King, and Risa Westegard. • Row 1: Risa Westegard, Ann Klinnert, Rhonda Larson, Kari Vaughn. OUR GREAT DANE We were honored to have with us this year our foreign ex- change student (from Denmark,) Catharina Engstom. Catharina stayed the first 3 months of her year long visit with the John Jensen family, then she moved to the residence of Clinton Hanson, and finished her stay in Pelican Rapids with the Don Lende family. Catharina has said that Pelican is not what she expeted at all, and she loves every single minute of being here. She says the American way of life is much different than that in Denmark, and she enjoys all the daily luxuries which we take for granted, and will miss them when she goes back to Denmark. Thank you, Catharaina, for lightening the halls with your smile, and brightening up our lives with your great sense of humor. Thanks for making our senior year more enjoyable and memora- ble. Back then our main concerns were, not getting lost on the way to the bathroom, and getting the good toys to play with at recess. Time has passed and we have learned to take one day at a time. Each year has brought new experiences and many memories as we search for ourselves. We remember Our rowdy sixth grade trip Bunny-hopping soc-hops Home- coming floats First kiss Driving with Mr. Amundson and finally getting our driver’s license Speech meets Dances with “live” bands Football games Getting our class rings Jr. Class magazine drive Gymnastic and wrestling meets After many, many weeks of planning, pomping, and praying, the arrival of our 1982 Prom, “The Best of Times” Volleyball games Pacman Fever Our “Great Dane” Catharina Crowning Queen Kay, kicking the junior girls in the Powder Puff game to remain undefeated, and defeating Staples during the Homecoming Football game of 1982 Choir, band, and art trips Meeting at Birkey’s Dressing up to celebrate Halloween Basketball games Rowdy noon hours in the study hall Decorating for Christmas Livening up the winter blahs with our new Sweetheart Week Track meets Cramming for finals Years of sharing friendship, laughter, smiles, tears and happiness and May 26, our Graduation Day! On the pathway of life, wherever you are, May hope fill your heart as you reach for your star, And may you discover as each day goes by, No dream is too lofty — no goal too high. Now as this segment of our lives comes to a close, we realize that there is a place in this world for all. Even though we all set off on out pathways, we will not be separated. The ties we have made in the past will become even stronger in the future. We, the Class of 1983, wish to thank you all for helping in making our years at P.R.H.S. special and meaningful, and may you have the best of luck always.
