Prom was finally done and no more pomping! They could sit back and enjoy the evening along with everyone else. Mr. Siegle was the guest speaker at the banquet, which was held at Trinity Church. Kari McDan- iels and Joel Stutsman did a fine job of providing special music by singing the theme song, “Come Sail Away.” When arriving at the dance you couldn’t help but notice how gorgeous everything looked. From the decorations to the finely dressed students. Al- though it didn’t take nearly as long for the deco- rations to come down as it did to put them up! §SP OUEEN PAM 10-Homecoming AND HER ROYAL COURT .. 1st Row—Gerry Bergquist, Tamara Linnertz, 2nd Row—Dave Sherbrooke, Lee Hovland, Risa Weste- gaard, Kim Brosowske, Queen Pam Rudie, Joni Hanusch, Jon Samuelson, 3rd Row Curt Buck, Trine Lie, Greg Anderson, Karen Moen, Deb Hovland, Cary Stephenson, 4th Row—Kay Tollefson, Blaine Sher- brooke, Dave Sather, Pat Westby. Homecoming 11 BIRTHDAY QUEEN The day of September 28th was special in more ways than one to Queen Pam. She was crowned Homecoming Queen on her 18th Birthday. The ceremony was made even more special by Ms. Knutson-Olson, who gave a speech on different types of Homecomings. Other events throughout the week included the victorious Sophomores in the “Toiletbowl”, also on Tuesday was the wild and wacky “Punk” day. Wednesday was the annual Powder Puff; the game ended in a no- score tie! The Volleyball game against Frazee was the excitement on Thursday, following the game was the bonfire. The pepfest on Friday afternoon was fun for all. Each grade participated in the relays and other competative events; all trying to get first place. Our football team went up against the Frazee Hornets that evening. Although they fought tough, they were defeated. The dance after the game was the first one of the year, it was also a great success along with the rest of the week. Wayne and Terri February 13th was a busy day for the Junior and Senior class officers as they decorated the Elementary cafete- ria with loads of streamers, hearts, cupids, and prepared the punch. When 9:00 o’clock arrived and people began to dance, the decorated room finally seemed complete. As the crowning drew near, excitement filled the air. Not only were this year’s candiates nervous, but 1981 King Tom Marty and Queen Filicity Trosvik awaited the coronation as well. The tension was relieved when Wayne Carlson and Terri Anderson were crowned 1982 Sweetheart King and Queen. The coronation was fol- lowed by the traditional royality dance and music was provided by Jessica. 14-Sweetheart Tim and Nancy Rick and Laurie Brad and Susan Mark and Jean Curt and Mara Sweetheart-15 IWr jjitndi I I'vjc tC Ver err ''l JUCy Soon +ta, Sch eoLy .a jjo ovV, and I heux, 3S© 5tar+ -UtLnlu- o - qctnq (vowt to Norway ayai,n. ft lot 44uncp have, Wa opend 4-Kxa ear , 4-kinejs I uAiJ ruuxr .onqct , flunqi I ujUL) lodo bade on om-fh l OLpp rvCSS . Not only is he a good teacher, but an inspiring per- son for the student body to look up to. He is the type of man you can come to with a problem and he will always find time to listen. He also has respect for your opinions and will give you a chance to voice it. This man has prepared us for our future in numerous ways, such as teaching us the science of human relationships, inform- ing us on the basics of driving, and even lessons in sportsmanship. As well as being a teacher, a coach, and a Sunday school teacher, he has time to be an admirable husband and father. We, the Class of 1982, dedicate our yearbook with a great amount of gratitude and love to Mr. A1 Siegle. Dedication-17 1st Row: Kyle Westergard, David McNabb, David Lehn, Paul Hexum, Curt Buck, Cpt. The last four games of the season ended in loses. The team fought hard under the leadership of their coaches and captains. The cap- tains were Greg Anderson, John Berg- quist, and John Sameulson. Voted to the All-Conference team were Greg An- derson, Tim Kowalski, and Darren Jor- genson. 20-Football Football Schedule 1981 T jHH m Sept. 4 Sept. 11 - Dilworth :v... - Hawley . HOPEFUL SEASON The Volleyball girls went into their season with confidence and high hopes to be the best they could be. They showed that hard work and desire could pay off as the girls won 11 of their 16 matches. The captains leading the tough Viking team were Zaundra Bina and Pam Rudie. The talents of Pam were seldom on display, due to a dislocat- ed shoulder, though she greatly inspired the team from the bench. Voted to the All-Conference team were Zaundra Bina and Jean Moen. 22-Volleyball - Volleyball Schedule 1981 Sept. 10 - Hawley .....................There .Sept. 14 - Ashby . .... Their hopes were to be- come the best? Having a successful season, their dedication to basketball has paid off. As the season progressed, the excite- ment continually grew more intense. This excitement was caused by such close rivalry among four teams: The Barnsville Trojans, Frazee Hornets, Perham Yellowjackets, and of course the Pelican Rapids Vikings. As of February 24th, the season was nearly completed, and the district standings were released. Due to deadlines, we were unable to cover the final results of the season games or the District 23 tournaments. We are confident, however, that a great amount of effort was put forth. A unique aspect of the team was that there were no captains leading the 1981-82 squad. Leadership was provided by five seniors, who all served as captains in one sense or another: Orin Follingstad, Mark Kowalski, Barry Osborne, John Samuelson, and Dave Sather. The dedication, excitement, and uniqueness of this year’s bas- ketball team will influence the goals of future Vikings. 24-Boys Basketball 1st ROW: Managers: Pat McArthur, Neal Barringer, Arlen Chris- tianson, Scott MacGregor, Cameron Haga. 2nd ROW: Asst. This year’s squad started the season off with a quick start using the exper- ience of four returning letterwinners and the coa- chable attitudes of the remaining members. Los- ing by some close margins and achieving sweet revenge against Underwood were some of the early seasons highlights. The squad has high hopes for the 81-82 season and looks for continuing im- provement as each game passes. 30 Elbow Lake Home 3 Audubon Away 7 Battle Lake Away 10 Rothsay Away 14 Hawley Home 18 Fergus Falls Home 9 Barnesville Away 11 Ulen-Hitterdal Home 14 Dilworth Away 21 Frazee Home 23 Underwood Away 25 Hillcrest Home 28 Perham Home 4 Glydon-Felton Away 11 Barnesville Home 15 Hawley Away 18 Breckenridge Home 22 Detroit Lakes Away HIGH HOPES We are lucky to have with us again this year, Mr. Dean Fox, the 1981 District 23 and Region 6A Coach of the Year. Along with him, Mr. Kollar and the mighty Viking wrestlers are full of ambiiton and spirit. They, like all other teams, hope to he the District Champions of 1982. The team has worked hard al season and let it show at their meets. Taking first place at the Lake Park Invitational this year, they defeated seven teams. Leading the squad are seniors Lee Hovland and Brad Ouren. A new part of the team consists of three Laotians. They have done an outstanding job this year and have helped bring the team to triumph. We hope that their enthusia- sum for wrestling keeps on growing in the years to come. 28-Wrestling 1st ROW: Doug Pixley, Mark Flath, Tom Nygard, Ryan Ness, Scott King, CPT. Even though there is the dark thought of no gymnas- tics next year, the team had more motivation than ever before. The spirited team was lead by four sen- iors: Joni Hanusch, Mara Lunde, Kari McDaniels, and Lisa Moses. The girls worked hard and set very high goals for themselves, in an effort to make the last year of gymnastics the best possible. Although gymnastics was not the most attended sport, we still appreciated your outstanding talent. 30 Gymnastics BOYS GOLF: 1st ROW: John Handorff, John Erickson, Paul Hexum. Placing second in HOL last season, the boys lost to Perham by only three strokes. The girls team took third at districts, and Pam Rudies score of 104 put her into regions. Mike Evenson was part of a three way tie for participating in regions but lost in sudden death. The junior high squad took first place at HOL with John Erickson the medalist, shooting a low of 38! Even though the team seems to be doing well, Mr. Handorff would still like to see more participation in golf. For the girls, captains Susan Siegle and Stacy Haugen encour- aged their team to be strong, their en- couragement lead them to 17 out of 23 members as letter-winners, one of which was voted most valuable, Ann Kimm. The boys were lucky enough to have been coached by Mr. Kelting, who was named 1981 District Coach of the year. Perhaps thats one reason they did so well! They were champions at HOL and District meets, then went on to place 7th in Regions. Congratulations! This year we had 15 returning letter- men all lead by the captains Greg An- derson, Wayne Carlson, and Anthony Haugrud. They were always showing their spirit and pride in the Peli- can Rapids Vikings. HOW SWEET THE SOUND In November, nine members of choir took part in the District tournament, which was held at MSU. Out of 80 participants, Peter Larson was choosen as one of 16 to be a member of the honor choir. For the first time, the choir made a trip to the Good Samaritan Home to perform for the residents. Mr. Aamodt says they plan on going back again in years to come. The annual Christmas concert was again broadcasted by KDLM in Detroit Lakes. If you didn’t hear it last December, make it a point this year. 38 Concert Choir SOPHOMORE SYMPHONIC Something different has taken place in this years Symphonic band, all 10th grade play- ers are now included. This change is due to a decline in band participants, although band has a notable amount of talent. They have put it on display a number of times ranging from Homecoming to basketball games to concerts. We appreciate the time and effort you have done to prepare for these events. BUSY FFAER'S Every year the Future Farmers of America hold a trapshoot at the Erhard Gravel Pits. They have three different age groups and trophies are awarded to the best score out of twenty-five. Larry Samuelson and Dean Backstrom were two of the winners this year. Another fund raiser they have is the annual fruit sale. The market for fruit this year was considered to be average. With all of this hard work and devotion they felt that they deserved a rest. Two times they planned a pizza party and failed, bad weather the incentive in both occurances. Now with the plans of a Pizza Parlor in Pelican, perhaps they will finally get the pizzas they really deserve! While in competition at Crookston last year the FFAer’s achieved a great deal of success. Anne Kimm was awarded top individual; the Dairy team placed fifth; Pelican had the champion farm management team. And the top three individuals were all Pelican students; Joel Jorgenson, Mike Zick, and Dan Schroeder. Congradulations to all on your superior accomplishments. 42-F.F.A. FHA TURNS CO-ED The year started out when the few but dedi- cated members sold cookbooks and pins. The sales went well and brought in a good sum of money. But more importantly the Future Homemakers of America no longer have to be girls. John Hagen will always be remem- bered as the first boy ever to belong in this group. Perhaps in the years to come FHA will not be looked upon as a “Girls only” organization thanks to John. 1st ROW: John Hagen, Holly Weiss, Lisa Haugrud, Janet Trites, Sandy McGregor. 2nd ROW: Barb Buck, Barb Marty, Lisa Johnson, V. CHRISTMAS CREATIVITY The Student Council, which is headed by President Pam Rudie, has accomplished a lot this past year. Besides the fund raisers, such as dances, selling candy canes at Christmas and carnations for Valentines Day, they also stirred up a great deal of guess work by sim- ply selecting two Secret Santas from the stu- dent body. The enthusiastic staff, always strug- gling with deadlines, managed to print sever- al interesting and informative editions with the help of their advisor, Mrs. Pawolski. The staff had alot of fun listening to the crazy ideas of Merri Johnson, but in general en- joyed putting together ideas and developing a strong character for the “Viking Times”.
