The ceremony began with the pro- cessional. Sophomore attendants were Lida Kelting escorted by Jody Paul- son and Tracey Johnson escorted by Joel Aakre. Junior attendants were Judy Siegle escorted by Wes Hagen and Pam Hovland escorted by Allen West- by. Foreign student attendants were Yoshie Yamauchi escorted by Rein Wijnsma. Homecoming Queen of 1976, Renee Dutcher, was escorted by Jim Knutsom. Queen candidates were Mary McDaniels escorted by Gary Price, Robi Jaeger escorted by Mark Restad, and Denise Dahl escorted by Paul Johnson. Queen’s escorts were Mindy Johnson escorted by Chris Westby. Anticipation and excitement were in the air as Renee Dutcher, Home- coming Queen 1976, stood behind the three candidates and slowly moved the crown from head to head. Happy screams and cheers filled the gym as Renee crowned Robi as the 1977 Homecoming Queen. A tearful Robi gave her thanks and the Concert Choir sang “To The Queen” especially for her. The Pelican Rapids Senior High School has two major performing groups, the Concert and Symphonic Bands. Each of these bands played as a pep band at athletic events and had a stage band within its members. The Symphonic Band also provided the school with its marching band. Both groups performed at the Dist. 23 Band Contest with the Concert Band play- ing “Festivo” and the Symphonic Band performing “Caccia and Chorale.” Many of the members performed at the Solo and Ensemble contests bringing more honor to our school. The school was also represented in the Minn. 1977-1978 All State Band by Brad Ol- son on Tuba and Nikki Sorum with her Alto Saxophone. Another highlight of the year was the Symphonic Band playing at the Fargo Civic Auditorium in February. The performance of the Symphonic Band throughout the year was once again a treat for all listeners and a real inspiration to the younger musicians. Mr. Couture, Director 13 Row 1: A. Irey, N. FHA’ers— Looking Toward Tomorrow The Future Homemakers of Amer- ica’s purpose is to help youth assume their roles in society through Home Economics Education in areas of per- sonal growth, family living, vocational preparation, and community living. When not working on any special activ- ity, the meetings center around general business, followed by songs, games, or lunch. This year each FHA member chose an independent project on which they worked for the rest of the year. These projects were Special Education, a Boutique, Foreign Foods, The Elder- ly, Weight Watching, and Alcoholism. Later, girls from each group performed demonstrations of their work before the local chapter and also for district and state chapters. Five FHA officers were “locked” against each other in a grueling run for the comical honor of Miss FHA. The winner, Kathy Couillard, regally attired in a mini-dress and diamonds(?) was crowned by the returning queen Beth Trites. In the Bashful Buddy project, each girl secretly chose another’s name. For the rest of the year they left notes in these girls’ locker, gave them little presents, especially during Christmas, etc. After all, it’s very exciting to re- ceive a little bit of happiness in your locker from a secret admirer. This year’s leaders—President Karen Carlson, Vice-President Mary Solien, Secretary Beth Trites, Treasurer Mi- chelle Olson, Stu Co Rep Kathy Couil- lard, and Eighth Grade Rep Debbie lindstrom—certainly had their work cut out for them. 15 Kathy Couillard, 1977-78 Miss FHA. FFA: LEARNING, DOING, EARNING, LIVING, SERVING The Future Farmers of America (FFA) has lived up to its code—“Learning to Do, Doing to Earn, Earning to Live and Living To Serve”—since 1946. This club has sponsored fruit sales, Donkey Basketball, paper drives, corn drives, and FFA week as well as taking part in state and nationwide activities such as judging contest, speaking contests, etc. There are four degrees that a member can attain in FFA. All newcomers are at the first stage—Green Hand. After the first year, one may become a Chapter Farmer if one invests $100+ in a farm project, a State Farmer if one invests or earns $500+ with a farm project, or an American Farmer if one has invested or earned $1000+ with a farm project. Such a busy club must have efficient and organized leader- ship. The 1977-78 FFA officers were Allen Westby, Presi- dent; Kurt Aakre, Vice-President; Mary Tollerude, Secre- tary; Debbie Nodsle, Treasurer; Shanna Perala, Reporter; Tony Vigen, Sentinel; Joel Aakre, Historian; and Mr. Joerger, Adviser. Kelting, photographer One of the Viking Roung-Up staffs main goals this year was to produce a new and better style school paper, and to tie every activity and every individ- ual in school together throughout the year, no matter how dissimilar. I feel we’ve accomplished this by the use of art work, opinions, write-ups, inter- esting articles, feature stories, etc. All of which made you read to find out what was happening and who was be- hind it. The amount of work put into just one issue is unbelievable. The paper starts with investigative report- ing, goes on to editing, typing, re-edit- ing, and several layout procedures, long before the student body ever sees it. I would like to give much recogni- tion to all persons who were involved in this year’s Viking Round-Up and who made it a success. But even more, I would like to thank you, the students of PRHS, who made the whole pro- gram possible through your support. Pam Hovland Editor LETTERWINNERS Row 1: J. Ellingson, D. Grefsrud, W. Among other projects this year, it sponsored the popcorn stand, speak- ers for the new athletic field and the Homecoming Coronation ceremony. It capped its achievements by attend- ing the District Student Council, where it won the office of Secretary. Some- one from the Student Council next year will be elected to this job. Lead- ing our Council this year were the trio of Robi Jaeger, President; Lisa Kelt- ing, Vice-President; and Lynn Kelting, Secretary-Treasurer. AFS The American Field Service Club (AFS) provides social activities for our foreign exchange student. Among their activities were Pumpkin Carol- ing and party (including “pumpkin- ized Christmas carols), an Oriental din- ner, a bowling party, a potluck dinner, and an ice skating party. A COLLECTION OF MEMORIES FOR YOU, FROM US We the Shada Staff, have tried to incorporate copy into our Shada, in order to produce a better yearbook. We wanted you to be able to look back in a few years and not only see group pictures, but also a short description of the organizations. In addition, Editor Kathy Couillard and Assistant Editor Mary Solien at- tended a Yearbook Workshop at Bem- idji State University and won first place for their layouts (theme includ- ed) which are used on pages 1-4 and 92. We hope that in future years this Shada will remind you of “The Times of Your life.” Copyright 1974 1975 by Three Eagles Music (ASCAP) A Division of Roger Nichols Music, Inc. Ex- citement, inexperience, unique playing conditions, (lightening—snow storms), costly injuries, and the “will to do well” were all ingredients of this out- standing football team. Adversity brought out the best in all those con- nected with the team and the end re- sult afforded the opportunity to win a Conference Championship and a berth in the State Championship play- offs. A final third-place computer rating illustrates the quality of this team’s play for this season. This was a closely-knit team, willing to work, and quick to respond and by everyone’s standards, Number ONE!! Thanks students for your support and thanks team for your efforts. Highlights of the season were the first place fin- ish in the Little Valley Tournament and Robb Miller’s School Record for career wins. Pride, enthusiasm, desire, and much hard work made these young men something to be proud of. Coaches Kollar and Fox 27 Row 1: S. Marty, S. Olson, B. Grefsrud, V. Martinson, W. Jurva, T. Albright, D. There was a lot of anticipation for a great season and we weren’t disappointed. Although we are not State Champs, we have tried just as hard and have worked to the best of our abilities. During the last home meet, the sen- iors were presented with red roses. It was a special moment that all of us will remember. We hope that the younger gymnasts will stick with it as they have great potential. Maybe some year, THEY will be State Champions. Good luck to everyone! Even though our high school days at P.R. H.S. are over, we have each been left with special memories. The first time that I met my very best friend and all the wonderful times we shared . .. 6th grade trip to Minneap- olis .. . the terror of our first day in 7th grade . .. first kiss... driver’s license ... Soc-Hops .. . Meeting all the great kids from other schools . .. giving the teachers a hard time .. . Friday night football games . .. Monday morning blahs. . . Summer slumber parties ... throwing eggs and tomatoes on Halloween night ... the great times shared with friends ... the Gong Show . .. pep fests . .. band trip to Kansas ... choir trips ... the tears we shared while performing our last concerts .. . 1977 Boys’ State Basketball Runner-Up .. . high school dances. .. Faces of old and faces of new, People we know and people we knew. Growing together then drifting apart, Always an ending and now a new start. At graduation we all grow nearer And all of our friends seem so much dearer. And as we say our final goodbye, One last embrace and one more cry, A “keep in touch” and a “promise I will” A “remember when” but, better still, A place in my heart, you’ll always stay, This is what’s said as we go our own way. Looking back at our years in P.R. and knowing each of us has left our individual imprints in the rooms and halls behind the doors now closed in our lives.
