YEARBOOK Highschool is the whirl of fall leaves swirling across a road at twilight. It's a goldplated-megaphone dangling from a dainty chain. It's buying all the latest fashions, then babysitting. It's meeting friends, watching the winning touchdown and experiencing the thrill and sweat of a locker room after the struggle. Highschool is cramming for an exam that you’d rather forget. It’s a shiny bronze ring that catches the light, and a charm bracelet with scattered memories. Highschool is growing up, and growing up is wishing you were young again. SHAD A 76 As the Seniors of ’76 we lovingly dedicate ourshada Plpl to our parents. Dear Mom and Dad, Looks like I’ve almost made it, and I’ve finally grown-up enough to be able to say I couldn’t have done it alone. Thank you for helping me up when I fell, and for letting go when I wanted to stand on my own 2 Earl, you’ll be here beside us when the grass is gone You’ll be here when water is’stilled upon the stone. There’ll be songs and stories told and then we’ll remember Your memory will be as plain as ashes in the snow. . Earl, you’ll be here come winter when tile cold winds blow, q We’il watch the geese together to see which way they go, And we won’t have to tellyou We’re sure you’ll know You’re memory will be as plain as ashes in the show. jrhook Company These pages have been lovingly brought to you by. . . Class Officers Rick Mayfield, Jack Haugrud, Patty Johnson, Kris Fossen, and David Ditch 14 The Good Old Days Once upon a time, the year 1976 was a dream away, and the kindergarten class of '64 was a reality in which the social pressures of what to bring for Show and Tell, or who to sit by at milk break was the main concern of a hundred 6-year-olds. Today, those same 6-year-olds, now 18, look back on the year 1964 as being a dream away, and the graduating class of '76 as becoming more distinct and fo- cused. The pressures may have changed some (altho' we still worry about what to show and what to tell); however, the people themselves have had 12 years to strengthen relationships and to build friendships... 12 years of laughter, tears, and understanding, growing, love. As sophomores, we first began to make our imprint at PRHS. Now, we were hot stuff--able to partici- pate in Sr. High dances and try out for the big band, choir, and athletic teams. Always eager to be unique, we proved ourselves capable of following thru with some of our crazy ideas by taking 1st place in Homecoming float competition with our flying eagle. Cheering the Mighty Vikes on to victory along with the crowd were our attendents Cheryl Rollie, and Suzie Velo, with their escorts, Dave Ditch, and Steve Westby. Presiding over our class that year were Dave Ditch, Pres; Steve Westby, V. Pres; Jack Haugrud, Sec; Suzie Velo, Treas; and Lee Brenna, Student Council Rep. Our junior year was one of challenge and conquest. Bringing us thru were Kris Peterson, Pres; Paul Albright, V. Pres; Ann Larsen, Sec; Cheryl Rollie, Treas; and Sylvia Pfiefle, SCR. Homecoming attendents and escorts were Cheryl Rollie, Terry Glaesman, Jack Haugrud, and Paul Bakken. Sky- rocketing over $8000 in magazine sales, the funds resulting from our efforts were used to put our prom theme A Time For Us into motion as we decided to create our own image of the perfect dance. De- spite the hassles of obtaining decoration committee passes, having enough blue streamers (in 5 shades), and being awe-struck at seeing our highlighted hourglass shatter at the last moment, we made it a memorable prom, (nobody really missed the punch, anyway) All of a sudden, we were Seniors. We were the class that everybody supposedly looked up to for su- preme guidance and steadfast examples. Could we actually bear up to our expectations? That probably still remains to be seen; altho', you must admit, we put our best foot(s?) forward. Homecoming '75 was momentous from the time that our float wrestled with a tree, (the tree won; none-the-less, we took 2nd place), to the crowning of Queen Suzie, attended by Cheryl Rollie and Kim Hanson, with the escorts Gene Ripley, Paul Bakken, John Lund, and Dave Ditch, to the last-second defeat of the Hawley Nuggets. Our class officers Jack Haugrud, Pres; Patty Johnson, V. Pres; Kris Fossen, Sec; Rick Mayfield, Treas; and Dave Ditch, SCR; have led us thru the trials and tribulations as well as our growth spurts and our moments of togetherness. And here we are, taking our last look around the halls of PRHS and holding on to all the warm memo- ries. .. not wanting to let go, but at the same time, realizing that when we do let go, it won't mean a separation, but a stronger bond between us.. .between our friends of yeaterday--like Earl--, our friends of now, and our friends of tomorrow. Bonds thru sharing the same smiles, crying the same tears, dreaming the same dream. We wish you... and each other... many more good old days and love, The Spirit of '76 Row Is C. Larson, T. We, the seniors of '76, would like to take this oppor- tunity to thank each of you for all you've done for us in the past 6 years. Somewhere along the way you've changed from babysitters into friends, and looking back, we can honestly say the good times far out- number the bad. If all the authority figures we run into in the world beyond are as understanding as the ones we've known so far, we shouldn't do half badly. 36 IF YOU'RE A SENIOR! It seems to me a crime that we should age, these fragile times should never slip us by. A time you never can or shall erase as friends together watch their childhood fly, Making friends for the world to see, let the people know you got what you need. However, I had a great year only because you, my host family, the friends I have made, the students and teachers of PRHS who helped me so much to find my place in Pelican. You made it such a fun year, full of experience! Through your many opportunities in music and in sports, you showed me a large part of your way of life. Thank you so much! I will never forget my year in Pelican Rapids! Brita Hollmann Jean, Brita, You are two very special people, two very special friends. It's always hard to say good-bye, but it's especially hard to part with those who have grown so close that the distinctions German, French, and America no longer apply. We have so much to thank you for. . . the wonderful experience of sharing ideas, ideas that come from far, far across the sea. . . . the exchange of a kind of knowledge that goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. . . you made it part of you to be a part of us. Friends, we will remember you. . .with loving thoughts of the good times. . . with fond thoughts of both of you. Maybe someday, in a strange place full of strangers, we will meet again. . . as friends. All our love, the senior class, PRHS, '76 When I first came to Pelican Rapids, I was a stranger to everyone and I was afraid of that. However after a few weeks, with the help of my family, this feeling was gone. The people in Pelican Rapids are the nicest I've ever met. First I'd like to thank my family for all they've done for for me. I've been very lucky and really very happy to live with them. Furthermore, I thank the school and teachers for their sympathy and especially Mrs. Franklin, for her smile, Miss Siewert for her help and Mr. Emmel for his talking (even if we sometimes disagree. . .). Then I am very glad to know my classmates, especially Nancy Peterson for being Nancy and I'm proud to be a Viking. This year has been an experience I'll never forget. Jean Yves 49 AFS Row 1: J.
