Y 'X The fall production this year was Our Hearts Nvere Young and Cay, a delightful comedy by Cornelia Otis Skinner. The leading roles were played by Margie DeOro and Carol Magee as Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kim- brough, respectivelyg Alan Deutsch and lim Hardy as their boy friendsg and Nancy Shirley and Hubbard Smith as Mr. and Mrs. Skinner. Four one-act plays were substituted for the usual single spring presentation. They were cast and directed entirely by members of Sock and Buskin and pre- sented for the members. The two plays, requiring all-girl casts, Our Aunt from California, directed by Carol Magee, and Overtones, directed by Margie De Oro, were given on March 9. The boys took over with their presentation on March 12 of Submerged, which was directed by Lee Lahey, and Summer Comes to the Diamond O, under the direction of Arthur Wiegand. These plays were so well received by the members that the club decided to combine the three best for an evening performance. Pei Mel Y uv :.- . TQ ,O YQ rx g 3 ' 'T' x 1 f 'S The Pel Mel, this year in its twenty-seventh volume of publication, con- tinued to keep the student body posted on the latest happenings at P.M.H.S. As in recent years, the paper was published by the journalism class, under the fac- ulty direction of Richard L. Lacey. This group published monthly a four-page issue of the Pel Mel, complete with pictures, Senior Celebs, the Nosey News, Hopalong Franticallys, The Dust- pan, sports, and news of interest to all. Ed Hardy was editor-in-chief of this year's paper, supervising its publica- tion. He was assisted by news-editor Ted Burke and make-up editor Ken Winte1'. Ted gathered the news, while Ken planned the paper and dummy. To keep the everpresent red ink at a minimum, business manager Ann Savage brought in plenty of advertisements. The rest of the stall wrote articles and assisted the editors in countless ways. The typists, under Miss Leona Schimel, performed the tedious task of translating into typewritten English the hieroglyphic writing ol' the aspiring young Pulitzers and Killgalens. Besides publishing the Pel Mel, the class wrote school news and feature articles for The Pelham Sun. These stories appeared weekly on a special page. Several of the class members had articles published in Vllestchester Life magazine. A lucky-member of the class will be selected by the Sun to compete as its entry in a statewide contest for scholarship to the Syracuse University School of Journalism. The club was formed last year with a hand- ful of Pelham boys under the guidance of Mr. Robert Shreeve, who supervises the boys and teaches them the proper method of handling rifles. Mr. Shreeve is a qualified instructor of the National Rifle Club of America. The would-be marksmen fire away at the Mt. Vernon RiHe and Revolver Range every Monday from five o'clock on. They shoot across a fifty foot range at regulation NRA. targets. Mr. Shreeve supplies guns for them to use. The members get real enjoyment from the club and are fast becoming sharpshooters. The club will remain without financial sup- port from the school this year because of a mis- understanding about the charter. XVith approxi- mately twenty members, the club welcomes peo- le to 'oin and ho ues for a bio turnout next year. P l I O . Rzfle Club Under the able direction of Miss Dee, the Senior Red Cross Club has completed another very successful year. All Red Cross work in the high school is guided by thc Red Cross Council made up of one representative from each senior high homeroom. It is the duty of this group to enlist the support of the student body in the projects of the Red Cross, and to keep their homerooms informed on the progress of these enterprises. The Red Cross Council had two major projects this year. The annual enrollment drive was a great success with a large number of home- rooms having one hundred percent enrollment. At Christmas time, 135 Christmas Gift Boxes were packed and shipped to needy children in foreign countries. This record compares very favorably with previous amounts sent in recent years. XVe can be proud of the record our Red Cross Council made this year. The enthusiastic support of the student body in both Red Cross Drives is a great tribute to the fine work this club is doing. Cm!! Lacking were the exceptional height and rebounding of recent years, but there to rake their place was a deep sense of team spirit, a spirit which was to pull many games out of the fire. The excellent sesasonal record of 12-5 was attained at the cost of such powers as Scarsdale, VVashington Irving, and Eastchester. Such a record warranted a tourney bid and Pelham was squared 011 with Yonkers Central in the Class B semi-finals. Despite a heroic 14 point perform- ance by Don Yerger, fresh from an appendectomy, the smooth passing Yonkers quintet won a squeeker 41-38. This same Yonkers team went on to win the Class B title from Washington 1rving. Leading the team in total offense was 1-1aro1d Work, a new-comer to the squad, with 174 points. Right behind him was co-captain Don Yerger with 165 points in only thirteen games. just as important, however, were the great re- bounding of Tom Balich and Don Burke, the defensive play of John Casman, and the fine playmaking of Zot La Selva, who joined the team at mid-season. Consistent performances from Steve Murphy and Joe Duggan rounded out the team's offense. It is, however, Coach Carl Schilling who must receive most of the credit for our team's success. Once again he turned out a winning combination. Despite an unspectacular JV record, we look forward to many more Hne teams. I f Z C .5 C Track According to Coach Richard Lacey, Pelham's 1950 track squad was one of the best he has coached and per- a,a, ha us the e ual of his most successful 1936 a re ation, g which included on its roster all-around star Walter Har- . rmgton. The 1950 team went through the season undefeated gr i'-. , 5 in all of its five dual meets, winning four team trophies, A i t setting three school records, and establishing a state mark. ln open meet competition it also walked off with West- chester Section 1 Class B Championships at VVhite Plains. The three new school marks were Tom Breunich's twelve pound shot put throw of 52.2 feet, Bob lVloberg's 434.7 performance in the mile, and Dick Sturtevant's 180 yard low hurdles time of :21.3. A team of Eph Klots, Steve Murphy, Doug MacLeod, and Bob Moberg turned in the time of 1l:0l.2 in the Eastern National Scholastic Distance Medley Relay for the state record. Pelicans also made a fine showing as members of the Section 1 contingent at the state championships held at West Point, where Stan Deck tied for first place honors in the high jump, Breunich and Sturtevant garnered fourth place in the shot put and low hurdles, respectively, while Moberg finished second in the mile. judged on the basis of indoor performances during this winter, the 1951 outfit, led by co-captains Klots and Hal VVork and augmented by capable replace- ments to H11 the gap left through graduation, should have a fairly good season. To date the Pelham relay team, composed of jimmy Harris, Bob Gambera, Doug MacLeod, and Eph Klots, who are believed to be the best in the history of the school, has in Madison Square Garden meets added to its laurels both the Knights ol' Columbus and Millrose lnterscholastic titles, and just missed taking the A. A. U. National Championships by a foot, while also lowering the Pelham mile standard to 32357. Two ol' the men counted on heavily for outstanding seasons are MacLeod, rated by Mr. Lacey as Pelhanfs greatest all-around runner, and Soph whiz llarris, last year's leading scorer, who may make sprint history before he graduates. Denise Sweeney Dirk and Bvzuble -Q6 W-fit? Dirk and Bauble is the junior high dramatic club composed of seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students. It is a music and dramatic club under the direction oi' Miss Henriette Liboz, in which the students have an opportunity of working on the stage crew, on properties, make-up, or on the stage itself in the role of an actor or actress. Here the student is trained for future Sock and Buskin productions. just before Christmas this year Dirk and Bauble presented in an assembly The Legend of the Orb, a delightful drama depicting the various ways in which Christmas is celebrated by nations all over the world. The spring offering of the junior high dramatic society was an entertaining comedy Nobody Sleepsf, concerning a burglar who entered the home of a group of women, and the troubles he encountered in trying to make his escape. Through their work in both of these productions the club members gained excellent training, while at the same time receiving their first taste of the acting world.
