President Wollinger hands out the long-owoited black books. 46 SPORTS ’68 47 FOOTBALL CHINKS ’68 Win or lose, team spirit was good for the 1967 Varsity football Chinks. Giving their all in every game Coach Venturi's young scrappers tried hard but ended the season 4-6. Losing their first three games to the tough Galesburg, Rich-woods, and East Peoria teams, the Chinks kept their spirit high, crushing the Little Giants of Canton the following week by 33-0. The Chinks' momentum steadily grew as they breezed by rival Manual 19-6. Fighting hard Venturi's gridders lost to Bergan 26-13, then to Central and Spalding. Never accepting defeat, the varsity gridders bounced back with a stunning 21-14 victory over Limestone ond a finale win over Woodruff 33-13. Awards for the Chinks were numerous as John Venturi and Jim McCleod were selected co-captains. John, senior quarterbock, was also chosen for the Chicago American All-State Squad along with Steve Sommer, Jim McCleod, Tom Vucich, and Jerry Norman. Jim was selected the most valuable player and also received the most tackles award. Jim Robson, Coach Millard. 55 They're off! resounded from the fans on the sidelines as the Varsity Cross Country Chinks took off on their first trip across the course for the 1967-68 season. To repeat their impressive undefeated seoson of last year was the desire in their hearts, and they ran as though chased by some dread monster. The Harriers ended the season with an impressive 8-1 record. Coached by John McFeron, the fleet-footed Harriers won first place in the lllini Conference, second places in the Forest City Invitational, the Rich Central Invitational, the Mid-State Nine Conference and the Bloomington District meet, third in the Peoria Invitational, fifth in the Proviso West Invitational, and, travelling once again to Champaign, came in eighth in State. Poul Morsch ROW 3: Cooch Stoudt Cooch Millord Jerry Coach Jack Stoudt started his career out os head wrestling cooch at Pekin High with an outstanding record. Working hard for their new coach, the Varsity Grapplers brought home a record of 13 wins and 3 losses, while the Junior Varsity had a 7-0 record. In tournament ploy, the mat Chinks won the lllini Conference. the Mid-State Nine, the District meet, and the Sectional meet. Individually. Steve Adams wrestled his way to win the lllini. Mid-State Nine. District, and Sectional contests, and an impressive third in State competition. Other wrestlers who qualified for the State meet were Steve Munge. Ric Dorsey, Sam Cretaro. Mike Buzick, Jerry Strau-man, and Roy Brees. At the awards banquet. Jerry Maquet received the award for the quickest pin. |ust nine seconds. The award for the most pins went to Steve Adams, with 12. Sam Cretaro received awards for the most takedowns. 33. and for the most points, 133. The Jim Custer award, given to the wrestler who has worked the hardest all year, was given this year to Jerry Stroumon. Roy Brees received the Duane Antrim award. Next year there ore prospects for an even better season. If the young wrestlers keep up their hord work. BEST COACH IN THE MID STATE 9!! 62 UNDEFEATED IN M-S NINE!!! The dote is March 14, 1968. The time, too late. The mood, sad. Tears are rolling down many a fan's foce. The buzzer sounds its dead tone; the game is over. We have lost. Many hard-fought battles were won by our Chinks on the long road to the state sectional. It was heart-breaking when we lost to one of our deadliest rivals, Peoria Central, by a score of 40-48. Never mind. We are still just as proud of our Chinks as we have ever been — or ever will be. OUR CHINKS ARE GREAT!!! The season was a great one. We had 27 glorious victories out of 30 raging games. An excitement-packed record. We scored 1996 points ogainst our opponents' 1601 points. Mighty, mighty Pekin!! We started our long and swift drive by sweeping over the Canton Little Giants, 76-50. in our season opener. Then we bowed. We dropped a grueling match to the Galesburg Silver Streaks, but we were not lost. We came back and smeared Richwoods, 76-50. We were on the way!! Then came the annual Quincy Tournament. Displaying our usually prime form, we swept past LaSalle-Peru, 72-68. in our first tournament game of the year. This victory paired our Chinks up against DuSable. We walked away with an exciting 68-45 victory. We rounded the corner and moved on to foce Quincy—one game from the first place title. Chink fans yelled and screomed as our tremendous team walked off the floor with the coveted first place title. We cinched the title with a thrilling 46-45 heart-stopper. Four days later the buzzer sounded as we walked off the floor ofter a 78-32 victory over Wheaton Central in our own Pekin Tournament. We had squeezed the mop and put it in our victory bucket. Our second loss of the season came against Springfield lonphier, 57-62. This loss occurred after our second victory in our tourney against East St. Louis. After recovering from our Lanphier defeat, we came back to tromp Peoria Central and receive the third place trophy. On January 5 we came out against the Manual Rams and walked away with a 46-42 win. We then faced Limestone and Woodruff and beat them 78-59 and 56-53, respectively. Our first overtime game of the season came in the gym of the Central Lions. The Lions were battling fiercely because of a previous defeat at the hands of the Chinks. Nevertheless, our fire-breathing Chinks scorched Central and left the Lion's den with a 57-55 triumph. We won our next eleven straight gomes by beating our opponents by not less than six points and not more than 29 big points. We were in the regional!! Our first gome in the regional playoffs was a smashing success os we walked over Eureka. 85-35. In our next regional game we passed the buck to East Peoria by defeating them, 57-52. Limestone was now the only barrier blocking the road to the state sectional. We shot down the Rockets by a 58-54 score. Hell's Half Acre was sagging; the seats were packed. The first red-coated Chink appeared. The roof blew. A solid roar of screaming girls and yelling guys rocked the gym. This was a Pekin Pep rally. For a solid five minutes throats strained until our Cooch Hawkins approached the microphone. Yes. this was the home of the Pekin Chinks. We were very proud to end the cage season as the first undefeated team in the Mid-State Nine Conference. A gun sounded and there was a sudden splash as the Pekin tankers took to the water for the start of the '67-'68 season. From beginning to end, the swimming Chinks instilled a fear of death by drowning in their many opponents. Under the able direction of Coach Peterson, the young team compiled a record of 10 victories against 6 washouts. The swimming Chinks ended the season in second place in the Mid-State Nine Conference. Senior diver. Bob Haas, qualified for state competition. At the awards banquet, Ramsey Van Horn was named the 1968 most valuable player, and seniors Bob Haas and Steve Peterson were selected as honorary co-captains. Pekin High, which often neglects the swim teom, should be as proud of the efforts of these young men as they ore of any other sport at Pekin. Congratulations to Cooch Peterson and his fine team!! Bill Hacker CINDER The cinder Chinks from Pekin High foughf many long, hard baffles to finish the season with a record of four wins and four losses. Mediocrity, however, is not a word used to describe this year's track team for many school, conference, and relay records fell to the Pekin cindermen. Bill Brown broke the school and greater Peoria area two-mile run with a time of 9:20.9; the varsity and Mid-State 9 conference two-mile run fell to Jim Kehoe, paced at 9:52.9. Scott Lange broke his own high jump record with a leap of 6'41 a , while Jerry Norman pole vaulted 13 feet to break the school varsity record. In varsity relays the distance medley team of Roger Brown, Bob Cook. Jim Kehoe. and Bill Brown broke the school record with a 10:41.4 timing. At the Woodruff relays the high jump relay team of Bill Brown. Jerry Norman, Phil Weidenhof. and Scott Lange com- Rick Hintz. Mark Veiier, Rich Monge Mike Lockhart. Alon Oliver. Garland York. In the Fresh-Soph Conference, Jim Mo Quinn broke the school, lllini, and Mid-State Nine two-mile run with a clocking of 10:09. Bob Cook broke the school record in the half mile with a 2:01 timing. The Fresh-Soph mile relay broke the school record with a time of 3:34.6, and the medley relay team with a 3:47.8 clocking. Third place was magic for the varsity Pekin trackmen as they placed third in the Mid-State 9, the lllini Conference, and the District meet. The Fresh-Soph teams placed second in the Mid-State 9 Conference and first in the lllini Conference. Cooch Bob Richards has worked many long hours with Pekin teams since he has been at their head.
