DRIVER EDUCATION Mr. J. B. Custer Illinois State University, B. Ed., Uni- versity of Illinois, M.Ed. Driver education is a required course which involves acquaint- ing students v ith traffic laws, safety, and the parts of the auto- mobile. The 2nd semester course is Driver Training, which gives the students actual behind-the-wheel experience. To complete this course, students are required to pass their Illinois State Traffic Exam and obtain their license. Health, also a freshman course, offers guidance and instruction in matters of hygiene and other areas in- cluding safety, nutrition, body functions, and pro- fessional health services. GIRLS ' P.E. The importance of possessing physical fitness cannot be overstressed. Four years of physical education are being re- quired now, instead of three. Activities included in this course are calisthenics, dancing, rope jumping, tumbling, indoor and outdoor sports, and marching. SPEECH AND DRAMA Miss Edith Hanod Eureka College, B.A.; University of Iowa, M.A. Miss Kathy Kelly State University of Iowa, B.A.: Colorado State College, M.A. Mrs. Blanche Andrew Bethanv College, B.A. Courses in speech range from Speech I to For- ensics to Radio Speech. In Speech I, students study the basic principles of speech through presenting various types of speeches to the class. The teacher and the students evaluate the speech and help the speaker gain poise and confidence. Forensics enters into the specialized areas of contest speech and Radio Speech is a combination workshop and study course. All phases of radio such as com- mercials, newscasts, dramas, etc. are presented. Those who complete this course may participate in daily broadcast over WSIV ' s Inside Chinkland. Drama students cover many parts of the theater in Drama I and II. In the first semester, they study theatrical history, stage craft, light- ing, scenery, makeup, production, direction, and acting. Drama II focuses its attention mainly on acting, directing, production, and dramatic literature. These classes spend most of their time presenting scenes from various plays to each other. The goals of the course are to develop the individual talent, to gain control of the voice and body, and to help give students more self-assurance when per- forming for others. 23
