This portion is one of the two foyers. The 1963-64 school year realized Pekin ' s educational dream. In May, 1962, steps were first taken towards this dream when the Illinois Consulting Service met with the school board to establish community needs. A sub-committee located a pos- sible school site, and contractors, Foley, Hackler, Thompson, and Lee drew up preliminary SDecifications. Citizens of district 303 voted upon and accepted the referendum. Construction of the new building progressed smoothly w-th- out major delays, so that by September. 1963, the East Campus was ready for use. The new East Campus consists of four main buildings — ' A building houses the gymnasium, physical education, and ath- letic facilities; B building accommodates the administrative offices, theater, and cafeteria. Floorboards being iii-Jlallcd in the gymnasium A lypkal (■la Mooin showing the movable walls in the C building contains classrooms and the library; and D building contains the art studio, industrial arts rooms, and heating and cooling facilities. Unique to the East Campus complex are its facilities for the future. Designed to handle 2,000 students, movable walls insure adaptability to growth. The locker area, lo- cated at the front entrance, is in one conv , xi 3nt spot, and may be easily expanded. Air conditioning insure= adapta- tion to twelve months usage. Eight teaching stations are available in the new gym- nasium with space provided for a future swimming pool. A seating capacity of 3600 is provided with easy expan- sion accommodations . ' r 5,000. Many great things I accomplished during that wonderful year, but perhaps the most im- portant was the friendship I found among you people. None of you could really know how hard it was for me to leave this town. Through the eleven months I spent among you, I learned to appreciate and love Pekin and its people, and the only thing I can say is thanks, thanks for everything you did for me. I don ' t say good-bye forever because only God knows if I will get to see you again some day and in some corner of the world. For a friend I can just say — Adios Amigos Yours truly, PAT Meet my Dutch family, the Kochens. Left to Right: Josii (15), Jan (71, Mama, Papa, and Janka (17). All I have now to remind me of my exciting summer as an American Field Service Exchange Student, are some wonderful memories, 250 colored slides, a continuous correspondence with my Dutch family, and the feeling that somehow I ' ve had a small part in bringing the peoples of the world closer to- gether. When I stop and think about it — that ' s quite a bit! I learned something last summer that I wish everyone of you could know — that people are really the same the world over, no matter what language they speak or what customs they have. My Dutch home or ' huis, and- in front the vegetable man and his cart. The Dutch windmill is a typical sight, yet a fading one. My Dutch father was trying to buy this windmill so that he could convert it into a restaurant. The Leg Game is played at many Dutcli teenage parties. The blindfolded girl is to find a certain boy by feeling legs. Last year ' s queen and king, Robyn oi tli and Amel Massa, anxiously await to crown this year ' s royal couple — Janet Becker and Mike Gilliam — as they walk toward the throne. JR.-SR. The newly ciowned couple lead the first dance after the coronation. The Jr.-Sr. Prom, Southern Splendor, was centered around the theme of a Southern mansion and its formal gardens. A real fountain gave the effect of being out- doors. The coronation area was a miniature flower gar- den, canopied by two large trees. LITTLE FOXES THE LITTLE FOXES by Lillian Hellman was Pekin ' s prize winning entry in the State Speech Contest competition this year. Two dramatically powerful scenes brought Pekin both the District and the Sectional first place trophies. In the state finals at Champaign the cast scored third in the state and placed first members on the All-State Play Cast. The judges selected Valarie Harlan for the second year and honored jun- iors Sharlyn Singley, Julie Yock, and Richard Schmiechen by placing them in this elite group. Pekin can take pride in one of the most beautiful and practical little theatres in the state. It stands as a tribute to the wisdom of the ad- ministration, the Board of Education, and the architects in considering the needs of theatre pro- duction in its broadest sense — drama, music, and dance. Because of their decisions to create this theatre Pekin will be able to enjoy artistic light- ing, excellent acoustics, comfortable seating and a future of stimulating productions. In the search for a play which would express the idea of this theatre and also show some of its varied talents The Madwoman of ChaiUot seemed to be the most suitable. The Play ' s madwoman, a fabulous old frump who holds court in a Paris Cafe, loves and is loved by the humble people. Overhearing four conspirators hatching a plot to dig up Paris to reach oil she embarks on a lunatic but purposeful war against greed. Love of beauty and art conquer the forces of materialism, and the rights of the individual triumph over con- formity. Surely this a hopeful theme for a the- atre ' s baptism. The 1963 football season brought Pekin High a new coach, Joe Venturi; new records; and renewed enthusiasm. Venturi ' s You Gotta Wanna slogan plus his policy, We will never be out-hustled gave incentive to spectators and to the team. In the season ' s first game, Argo was set back by the Chinks who received the annual Starch Bowl trophy. This game ended an era of rivalry between Argo and Pekin in the annual contest sponsored by the Corn Products Company. The gridders defeated East Peoria, Gales- burg, and Limestone. The Chinks set a new record in the Limestone game with the ac- cumulation of 53 points. Disheartening losses for the Chinks were to Spalding and Canton with both games being decided in the last seconds of the game. The success of the 1963 season was not measured by games alone. The enthusiasm of Venturi, his staff, the team, and the students made the football campaign for 1963 a mem- orable one at Pekin High. r- FIRST ROW LEFT TO RIGHT: D. Swift, R. Parker, manager, J. STATE CHAMPS PEKIN BASKETBALL A BIG IF— HAWKINS This headline appeared in the newspaper be- fore the 1963-64 basketball season had begun. This big if was answered on the night of March 21, in the Assembly Hall at the Universi- ty of Illinois. The Chinks had trained for six months aiming for this night. The work was hard and the hours were long, but our team was determined that this was the year. This determination was shown throughout the en- tire season as the Chinks compiled a blazing 30-3 record. On the way to this mark, the Chinks gained many honors including six championship trophies and one runner-up tro- phy. The runner-up trophy was won in the Pontiac Holiday Tournament as Bloom handed the Chinks a heartbreaking 62-61 setback. This loss sparked the boys to fourteen victories in a row before they were headed by the Mo- line five. During this win streak, the Chinks secured the Pekin Invitational Tournament Championship, the Illini Championship, and the Mid State-8 Championship. However, the loss to Moline might have been what the Chinks needed to jar them back to reality and to restrengthen their desire. Our boys went right to work converting this desire into more victories, realizing all along that one slip now that the tournament had begun would mean the end of the season. The tension mounted as the Chinks captured the Regional Champion- ship (remaining undefeated in the new East Campus gym), the Sectional and Supersec- tional Championships (keeping Coach Haw- kins ' record unscarred at Bradley Fieldhouse), and finally the ultimate goal of over seven hundred fihy Illinois High Schools, the State Championship. Yes, the big if was erased from Coach Dawdy Hawkins ' mind, largely through his own efforts. His dream, and the dream of our community had now become a reality. The team finished the sea- son with a 5-7-1 record with the Chink tankers taking two wins over Ottawa, two wins over Springfield Lamphier, and one win over Mon- mouth. The swimmers placed eight men in the district swimming meet, competing against some of the state ' s toughest competition. Seven school records fell during the season. Tim Turner set a new record in the 100-yard backstroke, John Edenburn took 19 seconds off the old record of 4:58.9 for the 400-yard free- style, and Steve Fisher set a new record in the lOO-yard breaststroke. Tim Turner, Scott Con- kel, Don Colgin, and Rick Velde combined their efforts to set a new record in the 200-yard free- style relay. These leaders inheritance knew that a nation thrives best when its people are independent— free to work and dream— alone, or with others who share their aims. As Abraham Lincoln put it, In all that the people can individually do for themselves, government ought not to interfere. This principle of independence, or free enterprise, has made America a land of plenty. It must be guarded continually, if the future is to bring still greater progress and increasing strength.
