Experience the Old To the 1963 Vekhuan Staff came the hope of presenting a story of student Hfe, a record of the accomphshments of Pekin Community High School. For us, next year ' s East Campus will bring a new home to juniors and seniors while the West Campus will remain for freshmen and sophomores. And yet, beyond these sturdy build- ings comes the endless training of students ' minds and hands. Herein lies the future, and in the future lies better knowledge. Seen from across the circular service drive, the English Building has served since its erection in 1955 as a home for speech, publica- ions, English, Latin, and mathematics classes. liLMM mm At night the glare of building lights reflects upon the gentle fall of rain. Named after Jimmy Doc Lee, the Leeway provides an easy passage between build- ings and is used as the site of the all-school dances. For years the Broadway Street entrance has served visitors to the Old Building. . Anticipate the New Beginning in mid-May of 1962, architects Fo- ley Hackler Thompson Lee teamed with the Kuhne-Simmons Construction Company of Cham- paign to build the new East Campus of PCHS. The structure will house juniors and seniors and may have a capacity for 2000 students. Located across from Building B will be the Little Theater, with a seating capacity of 600 per- sons, designed specifically for drama and small musical groups. Besides the major classroom area, there will also be a cafeteria, kitchen, mechanical plant, and gymnasium. Architects John Hackler, at left, and John Lee, right, confer with Howard Broberg, .irchitectual field repre- sentative. Unique in feature, the new gymnasium roof will be supported entirely by four interior concrete pylons. These pipes, steam lines, chilled water lines, and heat runs, are installed in the series of tunnels surrounding and connecting East Campus Build- ings. Employed by the Board of Education, the Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory constantly checks critical items of construction. Weld- ing tests are tests made by the use of X-rays, and welders, themselves, are to be tested as to their qualifications. Below is pictured Building C which will house the classrooms. Here the steel roof is in place and is reflected in the scattered puddles of water. ACTIVITIES Student Life 10 Fall Play 14 Contest Play 17 Speech 18 Homecoming 20 Frosh-Soph Party . STUDENT LIFE . . . Eager voices ride on silent winds ... a student enters high school and a new door of learning, friendship, and adventure opens. Through the hustle of registration he comes, bedraggled, tired, and possibly frightened, but time mends the way. FALL PLAY -Ah, Wilderness Ah, Wilderness, Eugene O ' Neill ' s nostalgic look at family life in 1906, was given on the stage of Pekin High ' s auditorium last fall. O ' Neill ' s look at the problems of a youth who is attempting to force his way into maturity has a fresh contemporary view. Ric Dancey played the role of Richard Miller, the rebellious teenager. His father was played by Jim Eichelberger and his mother by Carol Nether- ton. Jim Ramey portrayed the role of Sid, a drunk who hopelessly loves Lilly, played by Carol Vucich. Richard ' s love, who was played by Shar- lyn Singley and Curta Langford was the swift babe from New Haven. The other children in the Miller family were portrayed by Julie Yock, Ronald Krannich and John Smith. Also, John Alessi played the role of a playboy from Harvard. The play was directed by Miss Edith Harrod who was assisted by Gregory Chase, Valarie Har- lan, Marilyn Mathias, Susan Warren, and Mari- beth Wright. The stage manager for the produc- tion was Terry Jones. Gosh, but I love you! Richard! You ' re intoxicated — ! You bad, wicked boy, you! a JI Down with spoons! Leggo of me, you dirty coward! Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert are our successors to this flat, my dear. ' CONTEST PLAY The Broivning Version, Pekin High ' s contest play, won first place at district. Directed by Miss Harrod, the play related the events of a retiring and disliked schoolmaster of backward boys at a private school in England. In the cast were Jim Eichelberger as Andrew Crocker-Harris; Valarie Harlan as his wife Millie; Jim Ramey as Frank Hunter; Joe Ubben as John Taplow; Rich Schmiechen as Dr. Frobisher; and John Rowan and Julie Yock as the Gilberts. But I thought — my %vife thought, that an exception was made some five years ago ... You must forgive this exhibition of weakness, Taplon. The truth is I have been going through rather a sttain lately. I came unto the room this afternoon to find Taplon giving an imitation of you to Frank here. While the varsity cheerleaders led a large crowd, the band played victory songs. The Students cheered wildly as the boot and dummy representing the Manual Rams burned to the ground. The following night the Homecoming football game took place with the Rams beating Pekin by a score of 41 to 0. During the half the court running for Homecoming Queen was intro- duced. Ranch spends much of her time on Norwegian waters. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT From the fiords of Norway to PCHS. This describes Randi Sanden, our exchange student. Sent here from her home town of Moide, Norway, through the A.F.S., she has completed more than ten years of study at Norwegian schools where she studied algebra, physics, and French. The year she spends at Pekin High will count in her schooling. Between her six days of school in Norway, Randi enjoys such sports as swimming and sailing. In the winter her family goes to their mountain hut, where they enjoy mountain climbing and skiing. Her town is a tourist attraction and is called the town of roses. Norwegian girls are liked because of their friendliness, and this holds true for Randi. She likes Pekin High, but admits it is easy compared to the harder Norwegian schools. While in Pekin, Randi stayed with the Hilton Johnson family of Audobon Drive. BAND— The Pekin High Band has proved itself to be a very versatile group of musicians. The group plays marches, popular music, and concert music. The marching band, along with the ma- jorettes, go to the Argo game and march at all home football games. The band marches in precise and interesting formations. During the pep rallies and home basketball games, the band plays popu- lar music. The Dance band, comprised of mem- bers of the larger band, play at the after-game dances. The band gives Winter and Spring Con- certs for the public and presents an enjoyable auditorium program for the students and faculty. The band meets and practices during the first hour every day. Mr. Lawrence Fogelberg, with the help of assistant director, Mr. Ronald Benner, makes it possible for Pekin to enjoy this fine group of student musicians. 26 ... in Music MAJORETTES AND DRUM UAJOK—Clockwise: Jan Gainer, Rhonda Rowell, Beth Berg, Camille Munge, Kathy Alesandrini, Jerilyn Rowell. They meet every day during the third hour to practice. The choir is well known for the annual Christmas Vespers, which is given to the students and teachers during an auditorium period. The most memorable part of the program is the candle procession. Tchaikovsky ' s Nutcracker Suite and ' Twas the Night Before Christmas have become traditional in the program which is also given for the public. The girls ' director, Mr. Langley, started the Melody Maids fifteen years ago. Since then, thousands of songs have been memorized, 1,000 appearances have been made, and 50,000 miles have been traveled. To become a Melody Maid, a student must be a junior or senior girl with a sincere desire to sing, maintain a B or above average, and must give up all activities that would hinder her activities with the group. Miss Eleanor Francis, Miss Amy Lee Harris, and Mrs. Phyllis Doxstader are the faculty advisors for the large club. Annually the group presents the Spring Dance Frolic. Throughout the year the members work on tap routines and groups one and two create new dances. Modern Jazz Interpreta- tion, a relatively new aspect of the dance program of the club, is also practiced during the Wednes- day activity period. As the date of the Frolic ap- proaches, the members meet after school to perfect the many dances and the dance-interpreted play. The members promote a sales campaign and the proceeds are used to buy records, phonograph equipment, and costumes. A contest is held be- tween the girls and the girl who sells the most tickets receives a prize. Front Row: P. Underwood, D. Taylor, S. Wytcherley, V. Meeker, P. Nelms, M. Well, S. Smith, V. Un- der the sponsorship of the drama coach, Miss Harrod, the club seeks to further interest at Pekin High in the theater. The members acquire a feeling of self-satisfaction by belonging to the club because they are given the chance to con- tribute their talents to various skits and plays put on by the group for other students. The members enjoy watching movies, listening to lecturers who speak on the aspects of drama, and helping the stage crew build sets for school plays. The club also sells the tickets to these all-school plays and sponsors after-game dances. The proceeds from these projects are used to buy stage equipment. From Row: B. Funkhouser, P. Arnold, M. GIRLS ' CLUB In living up to their club ' s purpose, the Girls ' Club members spent the year rendering services to their school and community. Having no set re- quirements for membership, the girls met every other Wednesday. For the public they sent cloth- ing and food baskets to the needy and helped care for the sick children in the pediatrics ward at the hospital. The girls made tray favors for a nursing home, worked in coat checks, and welcomed new teachers by presenting them with flowers on their first day of teaching at P.C.H.S. The girls raised money by selling homecoming mums and having candy sales after school. The girls tried to im- prove student-teacher relations by sponsoring SAKCOTS (Stop at Kitchen Cup of Tea). Mr. Moss and his Tennis Club spent their time running off inter- mural table tennis tournaments, learning new fun- damentals in tennis playing, keeping up on na- tional and international data, and setting up de- ciding matches for our busy and conscientious tennis team. Although this year ' s club had a fairly small membership, the boys learned to develop their skills in tumbling under the guidance of Coach Vucich. There are no requirements for belonging to the club, only a sincere desire to work hard and learn. The boys also had the chance to improve their skills on the trampoline. Fro it Row: T. Aimone, F. Any girl who is a member in the Y.W.C.A. can join Y-Teens. At the beginning of the school year, the officers of all Y-Teen clubs met at the Y.W.C.A. for a Leadership Training Conference, pointing out each girls ' duties and responsibilities to her new office and to the other members of her club. This year there are six Y-Teen groups which are as follows: Mrs. Kirk ' s and Miss Kuntzman ' s sophomores; Mrs. Fogal ' s and Miss Carey ' s jun- iors; and Miss Ruey ' s and Miss Cavins ' seniors. Each of these groups gave a Thanksgiving basket to a needy family. Other service projects were Christmas baskets of clothing to the needy. Some other activities enjoyed by the girls were the Pat- teran, candy sales, and pizza parties. Front Row: G. Michael, Vice-Pres.; L. Washer, H. Holmes, Sec; M. Alder, C. Espenscheid, B. Robinson, N. Frosh Excel -Sophs Falter Mr. Stoudt ' s freshman squad lived up to its rep- utation as being a winner. After, winning their first two games, the freshmen suffered their only loss of the season at the hands of the Washington sophomores. The rest of the games went smoothly as the frosh stayed unbeaten in Mid-State 8 compe- tition, winning the league Championship for the second year. This year the sophomores had a disappointing season. Under Coaches Washkevich and Vuvich, they lost seven of ten games; however, four of these losses were by seven or fewer points. The two wins were the East Peoria and Washington games. A tie with Central finished a season which coaches and team wish could have been better. Front Rou:- L. Gray, R. Peterson, G. Secrest, J. Starting at Argo, events got progressively worse as they dropped seven straight to tough competition. The only bright spots were a seven to six verdict over Limestone and a five point short comeback during the Woodruff game. It was disappointing to both Coach Wells and the team that Pekin was not on the winning side of the column. Front Row: D. Clifton, D. Hopkins, T. Riviere, Doc Lee, T. Jones, D. Golden, Dan McDonald. BASKETBALL Freshman The freshman basketball team had a very suc- cessful season under the auspices of Coach Reid. Compiling a record of seventeen wins and one loss, they had the best win-loss record in the MS8 this year. The only loss was later avenged, and the team won fifteen games in a row making this season a most gratifying one. Frosh-Soph The frosh-soph basketball team under Coach Beachler had a losing year. Winning four out of their first five games, they hit a slump from which they never recovered. They ended their season by losing to Moline. AMEL MASSA DICK HOPKINS DAVE GOLDEN BOB RYAN VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach David Hawkins ' basketbaliers finished up the regular season with a 10-13 record. Being variable throughout the year, the Chinks beat everyone in the Mid-State Eight Conference with the exception of E. Peoria and Limestone, but still ended up in fifth place. In tournament play, the Chinks won their own invitational by beating Washington and Proviso East, but were eliminated in the Centralia Holiday Tournament by losing to Centralia and Marion. CHEERLEADERS All cheerleaders seem to agree that their main purpose is to promote the school ' s spirit and to help cheer our team to victory. With this in mind, the faculty and Student Council choose both the frosh-sopii and varsity squads. All girls, under the sponsorship ot Mrs. Doxstader, must have at least a C average. Two freshmen and three sophomores comprise the frosh-soph squad, while the varsity cheerlead- ers have two juniors and three sophomores. Dur- ing practice, the girls use the Dragon ' s Den and room three after school on Tuesdays and Wednes- days. FROSH-SOPH CHEERLEADERS— Fro Row: Barbara Negleman, Victoria Munge, Patricia Starcevich. Each year the Student Council spirit committee nominates several junior boys and girls as candidates for this honor. The Student Council then elects one boy and one girl to be the new Chink and Chinklette, who symbolize the warmth, spirit, and good sportsmanship of the students of Pekin High. Max Hancock and Cheryl Thomas. PEP RALLIES This past year pep rallies were held in the boys ' gym before most football and basketball games. At the rallies all students were provided with the opportunity to see the players and hear new cheers the cheerleaders had to present. Students were also given a chance to display their gratitude to the players, coaches, and cheerleaders for a job well done. These pep rallies were planned and presented by the members of the Student Council Pep Committee. The council members also par- ticipated in the short skits. — Cheerleaders and Student Council members present a skit at one of the many Friday rallies. 71 Cross Country Goes to State Front Row: Gene Murphy, Don Hawksworth, Jim Barnard, Roger Cranwill, Denny Boehler, Rich Rodgers, Tom Pfanz, Steve Huey, Larry Bequeaith.
