This year all Spanish students have worked in the lan- guage laboratory at least two of their five class periods a week. The lab consists of thirty booths each of which are equipped with earphones and fourteen of which have microphones. In the front is a machine which records four- teen voices on one tape at the same time. By means of this equipment all students hear their lesson through their earphones repeating words phrases and sentences Fourteen of the students have their voices recorded and then are able to compare their responses and their pronounciatron with that of the master voice The lab enables a student to recite and practice much more than he is able to in a regular class Iso lated rn his individual booth distractions are at a minimum for the student The teacher can communicate to each rndi vidual directly without disturbing the rest of the class It 15 possible to have as many as three different lessons going on simul taneously thus providing for 1nd1v1dual differences P C I-l S is the first high school to have the advantage of this par ticular laboratory set up L 5X

Mr. Norwood, Mr. Fildes, and Miss Jaggers 16 MATH DEPARTMENT The third floor of the English building was completed this year to house the math department, which is headed by Mr. Fildes. Students are arranged in classes according to their ability. Their ability is determined by the tests given upon entrance to P.C.l-l.S. In 1954 Pekin High joined a project for the purpose of improv- ing school mathematics. This is called the UICSM project. We are just one of many schools partici- pating in this program. The teachers are receiving special instruction, and they are collecting manuscripts and co- ordinating reports from partici- pating teachers. A proposal was accepted to make a series of films to be used in preparing teachers for the beginning course in the UICSM program. These films will be used at the conference this summer. The development of new text materials is a phase of this new math project. Pictured at left are the partic- ipating teachers in this new pro- gram.
