This year all Spanish students have worked in the lan- guage laboratory at least two of their five class periods a week. The lab consists of thirty booths each of which are equipped with earphones and fourteen of which have microphones. In the front is a machine which records four- teen voices on one tape at the same time. By means of this equipment all students hear their lesson through their earphones repeating words phrases and sentences Fourteen of the students have their voices recorded and then are able to compare their responses and their pronounciatron with that of the master voice The lab enables a student to recite and practice much more than he is able to in a regular class Iso lated rn his individual booth distractions are at a minimum for the student The teacher can communicate to each rndi vidual directly without disturbing the rest of the class It 15 possible to have as many as three different lessons going on simul taneously thus providing for 1nd1v1dual differences P C I-l S is the first high school to have the advantage of this par ticular laboratory set up L 5X Mr. Fildes, Mr. Dixon, Miss Cavins, Mr. Norwood, Mr. Rein, Mrs. Kalbachen, Mr. Newman, Mr. Hiett, Miss Jaggers, and Mr. Moss. Students are arranged in classes according to their ability. Their ability is determined by the tests given upon entrance to P.C.l-l.S. In 1954 Pekin High joined a project for the purpose of improv- ing school mathematics. This is called the UICSM project. We are just one of many schools partici- pating in this program. The teachers are receiving special instruction, and they are collecting manuscripts and co- ordinating reports from partici- pating teachers. A proposal was accepted to make a series of films to be used in preparing teachers for the beginning course in the UICSM program. These films will be used at the conference this summer. The development of new text materials is a phase of this new math project. Pictured at left are the partic- ipating teachers in this new pro- gram. K-7 lr 1 If 4 The Pekin Chinks, a group of young men with a mission to accomplish, set out to do just this the night of February 29 in the Peoria-Limestone gymnasium. Our first opponent was the Deer-Creek Mackinaw 5 and our Chinks rolled over them 60-38. The next game was with the pride of the small schools in Tazewell County, the Green Valley Hornets They were a great little team but again couldn 't handle the Chinks. In the Regional Finals we were to play a team we had defeated twice. ln one game we won by one point and in the other won in an overtime 72-70, but in the championship game the Chinks were Red Hot and ran over the East Peoria Red Raiders '76-48. Sixty Regional Champions were then assigned to 15 Sec- tional Tournaments and these Champions along with the Chicago Champion would make up the Sweet 16. The Kewanee Boilermakers were the first assignment and the Chinks quickly disposed of them '76-44. Then came the unbelievable story of the Championship game with Peoria Manual. 78 SECTIONAL CHAMPS PERKIN IN ACTION Two of the main cogs in Pekin 's 1959-60 basketball campaign, which produced Regional and Sectional cham- pionships along with a shiny 22-7 record, were Rick Lo- possa and Jerry Trimmer. Rick, a smooth and graceful manipulator at 6-3, gave the Chinks the pivot man with all the moves while Trim- mer, a fierce competitor, took charge of the backcourt duties along with Arlen Freeman. The pair combined to pace the offensive attack as LoPossa averaged near 17 points per game and Trimmer 15. Perhaps Rick's finest one-game effort came in the sectional finals when he rammed in 31 points as the Chinks outlasted Manual 81-79 in that never-to-be-for gotten overtime thriller. Trimmer, the southpaw with the deadly 20-foot jumper, enjoyed his biggest night against Woodruff when he pumped in 27 markers. The remarkable LoPossa received much in the way of awards as a result of his tremendous season's effort. The highest of these honors was his selection to the Chicago Daily News' 20-man all-state squad while also being named to the All-Northern all-stars, and a third team berth on the Champaign News-Gazette's all-state team. In his own area, Rick was a unanimous selection on both the Illini and Mid-State Eight all conference squads, and was awarded the Jimmy Doc Lee most valuable player award Trimmer was awarded honorable mention on both the Daily News and News-Gazette's all-state Mid-State Eight Con- ference teams. Jerry was also selected honorary captain of the 1959-60 Chinks. The keystone and the flaming torch are the emblem of this society. The keystone bears at its base the Letters S, L, C, and S, which stand for Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. As the keystone is placed by the builder to hold the perfect arch in stability, so the virtues represented by this symbol on the emblem hold the structure of education firm and true. On May 11, 1960, sixty PCHS National Honor Society Members were honored at a special assembly. Ardis Teb- ben indicated that the National Honor Society award probably is the highest attainable for a high school student, since it summarizes all the desirable ends of education. Jean Ulrich, Keith Groen, Larry Moss, and Ellen Dollahon discussed the four criteria for determining Honor Society members--character, scholarship, leadership, and service Superintendent F. M. Peterson administered the Society pledge to new members, and presented certificates of membership to senior initiates: Sue Belville, Rudy Berg, Sharon Birkey, Judy Boston, Roger Bowman, Rodney Chal- lenger, Sandra Coley, Marilyn Conway, Larry Creglow, Margaret Ann Fisher, Cameron Fluegel, Patty Gebhart, Bernadine Groen, Judy Hale, Richard Heisel, Karen Keil, Larry Krannich, Charlotte Kumpf, Rick Lopossa, Richard Lutes, Betty Mayer, Terry Meinen, Carol Moore, Dorean Nievar, Bill Pigman, Marie Reichert, Jane Riley, Craig Thies, Jerry Trimmer, Phil Unzicker, Nancy Utech, Neil Wicker, and Carole Zehr. Newly inducted juniors were: Sandra Ball, Alfred Bonjean, Bruce Bowen, Ruth Bussert, Mary M. Culshaw, Char- lotte Frings, John Hicks, Barbara S. Hoffman, Barbara Hofreiter, Ralph Jones, Carol Lutz, Janet Marrs, Gabriel Patay James Kent Planck, Kathy Proehl, Shirley Rodgers, Joan Sutton, May Venovich, Julie Warren, and Barbara Yentes. Elected in 1959 were senior members: Jerry Beasley, Julie Bergdahl, Ellen Dollahon, Marilyn Fisher, JoAnn Fry- man, Steve Gamble, Keith Groen, Bruce Gustafson, Camilla Hoffman, Donna Milford, Larry Moss, Patricia Mul- looly, Nanciann Neikirk, Stephen Patay, Ardis Tebben, and Jean Ulrich. TENNIS The 1960 edition ofthe Pekin Tennis team had a good, well-balanced attack. The team was composed of last year's lettermen: Larry Moss, Ronald Friederich, Arlen Freeman, Bob Smalley, and Neil Wicker. Other members of this year's team were: Jim Swendsen, and Dave Edwards. Along with the previously named squad members, the following boys were also instrumental in Pekin's good season. 'Those boys were: Lynn Ripper, John Gay, Goran Wicklander, Gregg Bingham, Steve lsenberg, Max Han- cock, and Carlo Alesandrini. The tennis team had a good season this year. Their record was 13 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie. The varsity won every tournament, except the State, and every conference title in which they participated. Their accomplishments include: District Championship, Illini Championship, Ivlid-State 8 championship, and they had four team members qualify for the State Tournament at Cham- paign. Those members were Neil Wicker, Bob Smalley, and teammates: Larry Moss, and Arlen Freeman. VARSITY BASEBALL -A A.. a , Q s Team in Action x.'
