SWEET SIXTEEN When Coach Cain's fighting Chinks dropped a heart-breaking double-overtime 56-58 battle to the Ottawa Pirates in a first-round State Tournament game in the Bradley Field House, there were eight teams left in contention for the title, but not one of them had more will to win than the Chinks. In compiling a glittering 24-5 season's record, Pekin made up in rebounding, defense, and scrap for what they may have lacked in polish and speed. Scoring of starters was usually well balanced, and in game after game someone came from the bench to spark the team. Coach Bob Ccrin Victory smiles. Several players show promise of helping Coach Anderson's varsity in 1957. The Baseball Club is composed of boys who are interested in playing baseball on the high school team, or else just interested in becoming better baseball players. Pekin......56 Farmington ....55 Pekin......48 Central ........45 Just as it is impossible to name an outstanding player, so is it difficult to select the most thrilling games—except, of course the East Peoria game in the Regional and the Central game at Macomb, where the Chinks bounced back from a nine-point deficit to win 48-45. Then there was the week end during which Spring-field and Galesburg came to Chinkland and absorbed 65-44 and 77-60 drubbings. And we won't forget the 86-52 triumph over the Central Lions! The Chinks came close to both the Mini and Big Twelve titles, losing the former because they played fewer conference games than East Peoria and the latter because the two games they won from Central and Manual did not count in Big Twelve standings.
