Having elected to organize our current yearbook in an unusual, possibly unique, way, we decided to match that with an out-of-the-ordinary dedication: To the loyal taxpayers of District 303, who have never voted down a request of Pekin High, we gratefully dedicate the 1957 Pekinian. Here and on page 139 is pictured the unsurpassed educational plant furnished by our taxpayers, who match our A-B-C theme with their Always Back Chinkland. 2 of PEKIN HIGH ... Dick Murphy, Ronny Temple, Bill Tunis, Bob White, Jon Barr, Larry Leitner, Bob Cordts, Mgr. Tom Houghton A title that had previously eluded superior Anderson-coached baseball teams was won by the 1956 squad—The Illini Conference championship. This was a notable achievement for a squad boasting only four senior lettermen. During a building year inexperience results in costly errors, which sometimes lose games. There is every reason to expect that these young players will compile a better record in 1957 than the 9-11 record they posted last spring. Several players show promise of helping Coach Anderson's varsity in 1957. The Baseball Club is composed of boys who are interested in playing baseball on the high school team, or else just interested in becoming better baseball players. The club has about sixty members and meets in room 217 during each activity period. BASEBALL CLUB Row 1: Dean Fox, Jim Smith. Dick Trumpy, Tom Luft, Bob Cash. In compiling a glittering 24-5 season's record, Pekin made up in rebounding, defense, and scrap for what they may have lacked in polish and speed. Scoring of starters was usually well balanced, and in game after game someone came from the bench to spark the team. Coach Bob Ccrin Victory smiles. Pekin......56 Farmington ....55 Pekin......48 Central ........45 Just as it is impossible to name an outstanding player, so is it difficult to select the most thrilling games—except, of course the East Peoria game in the Regional and the Central game at Macomb, where the Chinks bounced back from a nine-point deficit to win 48-45. Then there was the week end during which Spring-field and Galesburg came to Chinkland and absorbed 65-44 and 77-60 drubbings. And we won't forget the 86-52 triumph over the Central Lions! The Chinks came close to both the Mini and Big Twelve titles, losing the former because they played fewer conference games than East Peoria and the latter because the two games they won from Central and Manual did not count in Big Twelve standings. Last fall a new coach, Mr. Stephens, began coaching a relatively inexperienced (two returning lettermen) cross country squad, which managed to win three dual meets and place creditably in three multi-team affairs. Darrell Oltman, who had never been out for any high school sport before, was Coach Stephens' fastest and most consistent runner. Ronald Schott, a freshman, also looked good. Both of these boys will be available next fall, as will letterman Jim Westervelt. Lettermen Art Lampitt and Ron Faichney, and Ken Craig were the only seniors. Last year's prom, built around the theme of a Star-light Fantasy, was the nearest thing to dancing in a cloud palace that you are likely to get in the cafeteria. The decorations consisted of a low ceiling of stars over a hall that seemed to fade into the distance. The Dragons' Den was transformed into a moonlit garden with palms and ivy. The King and Queen, Jim Price and Mary Frings, were throned on white wrought iron chairs under a gold crown suspended from the ceiling. Kirwan MEMORIAL STADIUM SPRING FROLIC Let's take a trip to Bermuda THE STORY Dance Club brought down the curtain on the 1956 Spring Frolic with a musical-dance-comedy entitled THE HEAVENLY TWINS ' It was the nautical tale of a sophisticated young lady who got trapped into taking her troublesome ten-year-old twin sisters on a cruise to Bermuda. Now the twins may have looked like angels in their baby cribs—but they had been nothing but double trouble for Big Sister since the day they were christened! Yet they could hardly be blamed for Mom and Dad being in Europe and Auntie on her third trip to Reno when Big Sister got her chance to join a troupe of show girls on a holiday cruise with their producer. The twins weren't included in the contract, but the producer decided to take the bitter with the sweet rather than turn down such a charming addition to his chorines. So he hastily signed Big Sister's contract and turned his attention to the arrival of the favorite and most famous member of his troupe, Lord Marmaduke, the talented child movie star. Marmaduke, accompanied by his fashionable mother, Lady Wallings-ford, and a grand display of luggage, made a dramatic entrance. He strutted on deck like a proud little peacock, posed for photographers in a condescending manner, then waved and bowed to his admiring public and retired to his luxurious stateroom above. Only the twins seemed unimpressed by such pomp and ceremony. They had never seen a real movie star before, but they It can't be alive 1 Lord Marmaduke's a star! THE HEAVENLY TWINS Ship Ahoy-hoy-hoyr The Captain of My Heart! didn't want anyone to know it. If Lord Marmaduke had led in a white elephant, they would have acted as if they were accustomed to seeing one every day! Life on the high seas was gay and carefree for awhile. The twins enjoyed romping with the crew, and Big Sister reveled in her budding romance with the handsome Captain. The show girls were contented with sun bathing on the decks of the S.S. Commodore, and the sailors were intrigued with the morning rehearsals for the new show. Everybody seemed to be having a ball until the twins started a feud with Lord Marmaduke. They decided he was just too elegant for words and plotted with the rest of the moppets aboard to muss him up a bit. Big Sister was too preoccupied with her shipboard romance to notice that trouble was brewing. While she was trying to chose between love and a career, the feud developed into a fist fight that disgraced the twins and ruined Big Sister's chances in show business. The “All Ashore signal sounded none too soon! After the irate producer and indignant Lady Wallings-ford stormed off the ship followed by Lord Marmaduke with nose in air and arm in sling, Big Sister tore up her contract and settled for Love and Marriage” with the Captain of Her Heart. The show girls and crew remained aboard to give a farewell party to the happy couple. It was a perfect ending to a heavenly cruise for the Captain and his bride-to-be, but it was just another ball to the Heavenly Twins! That’s a question many prospective sitters ask us. If they are buying photographs hy the square foot it’s a reasonable question too, and we can make that kind of photographs as cheaply as anybody, perhaps cheaper. but if you want the knowledge that comes with years of experience, the facility of posing and lighting so necessary to produce portraits of character; if you want time, attention and courtesy, you’ll look at our samples first. Then ask “how much” and we can meet any price you want to pay. Dare us to prove it—any time! NO. This is a formula showing the financial benefits of a college education based on today’s salaries. It shows simply that for an investment of $2000 per year and 4 years of your time you may net about $103,000 more in your lifetime than the man whose formal education stops at high school. The typical high school graduate will earn $165,000 in his lifetime compared to the typical college graduate who will earn $268,000. These are average figures, and, of course, you can do much better, or much worse. Yet it points out one way you can help assure yourself of $3000 a year more than you could have earned otherwise. This extra income can mean a better home for you ... a complete education for your children ... a full and more rewarding life for you and your family. Other rewards a college education can help you achieve may be even more significant than a higher income: a deeper understanding of people ... a greater ability to get along well with others ... a fuller life, to mention but a few. When you add up the years of your learning, remember that you are adding up your future. And education is an investment in the future which will return to you many advantages. Estimated average cost of attending college including tuition, room and board, books, and incidental expenses. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO
