NATIONAL HONQR SGCIETY The highest scholastic merit to he ohtained hy upper classmen from Pekin High is their mem- hership in the Peliin Chapter of the National Honor Society. This outstanding group ol stu- dents, selected not only loecause of their out- standing scholastic record, hut also on the hasis of character, leadership, and service, represents not more than I5 per cent ot the entire Senior Class and IO per cent of the Junior Class. Actual selection of the students for memlaer- ship in NHS is done hy the Student Council and the faculty. All students ranlting in the upper third of their respective graduating classes are given consideration. and then selection of the final group is laased on service, leadership, and character. Service may he defined as willingness to ren- der service to the school when called upon. to do committee or staff worlf. to represent the school in inter-class or inter-school competition, readi- ness to show courtesy lay assisting teachers. visitors, and students, and willingness to uphold scholarship and to maintain a loyal school attitude. Leadership consists in demonstrating initiative in classroom activities which leads to higher scholarship for all: initiative in promoting any high school activities: successfully holding school offices, committee chairmanships and other posi- tions of responsibility: contributing ideas which improve the civic life ol the school. Character is demonstrated hy a student when he meets his individual obligation to the school promptly and completely: exhihits highest stand- ards of attitude towarcl honesty and reliahility: possesses desiralale qualities of personality such as cheerfulness, friendliness. neatness. poise and stahilityg complies with school regulations and upholds principles of morals and ethics.
