Last year, Darrell Lacock was chosen by the student body to assume the responsibilities of' this office. His outstand- ing leadership and personality have made this year's Student Council one of the most effective in the history of Pekin High. The Bausch and Lomb honorary science award was again presented to another deserving senior, Duane Dowell, who has maintained a five point aver- age in his high school science courses. This award enables Duane to compete for one of the three scholar- ships offered by the Bausch and Lomb Optical Com- pany. The two senior students selected to receive the DAR awards this year were Paula Gerspacher and Darrell Lacock. They were selected by the PCHS senior stu- dents and faculty on the basis of the following char- acteristics: service, leadership, courage, scholarship, dependability, and patriotism. These awards were presented to them during the auditorium programs on February 17. Page sponsors: George W. FOOTBALL The Pekin Chinks started their l953 season with a bang, whipping Harrison Tech of Chi- cago, 2U-U in the second week of September, and ended it the same way just two months later by defeating Peoria Woodruff, 7-6. In between those two months the football Chinks compiled a seven won, two lost, and one tied record. lust about par for the course. Peoria Central delt the crushing blow, cr 12-7 blasting, on Memorial Stadium turf, before a packed house. Lewis started his 24th year of coaching with 18 lettermen from which to pick his team. By the end of the season at least half of these were unable to play because of sickness or injury. lt seemed to be Pekin's year to catch everything there was to catch. That was proved on the night of March 12 in Spalding's gym when an underdog quintet of Chinks battled Peoria Central right down to the wire before bowing in sectional final play. Harry Anderson guided a group of players the entire season that included just two seniors, Bob lones and Henry Cakora. The rest were juniors and one was a sophomore. The Bed and White were never better in the sectional finals. They were a real credit to the school, the town and their coach. The season started slow for Andy and his eager team. With so many young ball players on your team it's sometimes tough, but the able Anderson, in his third year as head coach, remained patient and at the end of the year his hopes were rewarded. Even though the Chinks' regular season wasn't fabulous, they raised some eyebrows a number of times. They fought Barrington and Quincy, a couple of state tourney entrants, to nearly a standstill befcre dropping close ones. Decatur was extended to its furthest length in gathering a one point victory. Bob jones beat Co-Big 12 champion Danville with a long one hander, 48-45, for one of Pekin's major wins. The Bed and White topped Manual three times and split with Central in regular season play. A 48-47 thriller win over Woodruff gave Pekin their own Regional tourney. Before Woodruff the Chinks had beaten Morton and Delavan in convincing fashion. The final seasons record was l7 wins and ll losses-an excellent record if everything is taken into consideration. The outlook for next year is as bright as an early morning sun. Back with us will be Tom Lindquist, Bill Fredrick, Larry Crouch, Don Gar- man, Bob Kennedy, jerry Cox, Larry Vogel and Marv Friedrich. These boys, along with some help from john Moss's froshesoph team, spell success any way you look at it. Let's all hope that the success is spelled PEKIN. Pekin I-ligh amassed six Big Twelve indi- vidual championships, First place honors were awarded to Bob Calhoun, Bob Malavolti, Gary Kluever, Darrell Guidotti, Don Taylor, and Tom Colson. Pekin totaled 54 team points, enough to provide the winning margin over highly rated Champaign and Urbana, The Chinks then conducted a mass invasion of Champaign, as four firsts and eight state gualifiers netted them their first sectional cham- pionship in Pekin l-ligh's history. Colson, Mala- volti, Taylor and Kluever emerged on top of their weight divisions. ln running second best, Calhoun, Guidotti, Ben Bose, and lim DiDonato earned a trip to the state finals in Proviso. Bob Malavolti was the only mat man to post a perfect undefeated-untied regular sea- son record with l3 wins. Bob Calhoun es- tablished an astounding new school record of pinning lU straight opponents. Calhoun and Taylor were also undefeated in regular com- petition, each having been tied once. BASEBALL Harry Andersorfs diamond Chinks started the season slow but by tournament time were going in high gear. They finished the season with a very respectable 9-ll record. One of the highlights of the season was the fine clutch pitching done by Emil Monge. Emil started the season out at first base, but changed to the mound in mid-season when the Chinks were in the midst of a losing streak, Big Tom Lindquist spun a no-hitter in '53 and sent the Chinks into the District finals. A victory over Delavan in the District finals set the stage for the Macomb Sectional. There it was Pekin again. They beat Quincy 4-3 to earn themselves the trip to Tom Connor field in East Peoria, the site of State play. A first round 5-3 defeat by Chicago Vocational ended Andersorfs hopes of a second State title. Kiss of Fire Q4 50 vw Oh, Happy Day Safel No. No. A Thousand Times No! O Come All Ye Faithful 44BUv A CAPPELLA CHOIR The choir is one of the largest and certainly most active organization in PCHS. This group meets every day second hour and consists of some 140 students. Choir members are usually selected from the sophomore glee clubs after having been enrolled in chorus classes as freshmen. Admittance into choir may be ob- tained, however, with a private try-out with the director, Mr. Harry Langley, if the student has had no previous class experience. The choir gives two concerts for the public during the year, at Christmas time and in early spring. They also make various other appear- ances during school assemblies and for Com- mencement and Baccalaureate. The student body and entire community always look forward to an operetta or variety show which are given on alternating years by the choir. Both productions are generally very successful, and although hours of practice and hard work go into their completion, the choir members are always sorry when the final cur- tain goes down. Besides all these events, many members of the choir participate in dis- trict and state music contests and the Big 12 Music Festival held in the early spring. The choir members help support the music department financially by selling concessions at football and basketball games and taking charge of the checkroom during all basketball games. This outstanding group of students, selected not only because of their outstanding scholastic record, but also on the basis of character, leadership, and service, represents not more than 15 per cent of the entire Senior class and lU per cent of the Iunior class. Actual selection of the students for mem- bership in NHS is done by the student council and the faculty. Secretary lllltlll CLASS A name is called, a chair is left, and another graduating senior walks toward the speakers platform. He goes to receive a small parcel that signifies the completion of four years of schooling. ln the brief space of time it takes to reach the platform, a thousand and one memories race through his mind as he recalls the many events that happened during his high school career his first social, the FroshfSoph Party, the many school plays, the athletic contests, the various clubs, and the time he spent work- ing with his junior classmates in transforming a night at Pekin High into an Evening in Paris for the Prom. Now he is leaving behind shouting pep rallies, Homecoming parades, spirited student council elections, the bit of professional life he saw in lyceums, and above all, he is leaving the gang As he gets his diploma and walks away, he knows full well he will never really leave PCHS, for his mind will always look back on those four wonderful years. And the next time he sings the Fight Song, he will put special emphasis on We'll cheer forever, Pekin, Pekin . . . 44 100 2 MARILYN ABRAHAM Tap Clubp FHA. I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire. Highe lighting the years activities was an evening of music and dancing at the lunior-Senior Prom, during which two of our classmates were crowned King and Queen, Climaxing the school year was the Student Council election, when one of our members was given the gavel symbolizing his leadership during another year's Work of the Student Council. The biggest event on the calendar for us this year was the Frosh-Soph Party. One of the main attractions was the unusual decorations which de- picted an appropriate fall theme, Football , The crowning of Margie Carl and loe Berardi as Princess and Prince' ended a memorable evening for all. As the year draws to a close, we are all looking forward to being upper- classmen and to attending the lunior-Senior Prom. Then we'd walk through the corridor, Wondering where it would lead us, always asking upperclassrnen for informa- tion, and thinking, Will we ever find our way around as they do? After surviving a few weeks of this, our social life was introduced with the FroshfSoph party when we became acquainted with other underclass- men. Since then, we have also participated in a variety of new activities which have made PCHS more meaningful to us. Now we are finding our way around and feeling quite grown up, al- though we know there is still rnuch ahead of us. And, of course, we are anxiously waiting to be-coine one of those wise upperclassmen. 44 144 bb I've never seen a sackot or a Iyceum l w Alice Abernathy l Iohn Abts Anita Affolter ' Gary Armstrong Richard Arnett ' Linda Ashby Marilee Babcock Ierry Bailey Mary Rose Bailey Cecil Ball Mary Elaine Barbour Virginia Barchers Douglas Barnard Albert Barner Karen Batterton Carol Beever Donald Benassi Maria Berardi Gerald Berchtold Illa Bemshausen Beverly Bledsoe Donald Borton Ioyce Bozarth Richard Bozarth Nancy Brown Sally Brush Bonnie Buchanan lack Buchanan Mary lane Buchanan Charles Burbridge Connie Burdett Donna Burke Faye Bumham Stanley Busby Robert Bush Or a ramp across the gym Norma Carlton George Carnes Carolyn Carson Alan Casio Eddie Cazel Dick Childers Bonnie Claton Iane Clutts Carol Cochran Iudy Cody loe Colson Bill Conarro Mary Conley Eddie Cooper Vivian Cooper Robert Cordts Mike Cornick Keith Creglow Sharon Crohn Margery Custer Ioanne Darnaby Ollie Davis Mary Diveley Carol Dooley Kay Drudi Patricia Ann DuPage Beverly Eertmoed Gary Eertmoed Beverly Ehrich Ann Ehrlicher Carolyn Eitenmiller Nancy Engelhorn Iean Enos Ronald Estes Pat Evans Wendell Ferguson Margaret Fisher Iudy Fitzanko Ianet Forbes Robert Forbes Charles Forbis Barbara Ford Wayne Frampton Mary Frings Linda Furlong Patrick Gallagher Nina Gamhetti Rosalie Ganson Ianet Gardiner Gaylord Garrard Sandra Gehrig Warren Gilbert Gloria Gillespie Alfred Gingotti Mary Ellen Ginther Mary Ann Gleason Darlene Goodin Mary Goodlick Sally Goodwin Ioe Gray Karen Gray Robert Green Connie Greer Marcia Groen Ierry Gregory Fred Gustoff Ray Hall Marilyn Hallar Fred Haller Iudith Hamann I feel so lost Q 147 an pun fx -ik fy ,-3 'iii-9 Q por 41 'f7 'mg F' 4-we My W ,, ,rv 'Chef 'UW ln this brand new school K 148 2 Iudith Hanapel Marilyn Hancock Helen Harris Frank Hauter Larry Haynes Darrell Hedrick Rod Herbig Ben Herring Carolyn Herron Carol Heiser Sue Hobson Iudith Hoerr Phyllis Hoffman Deanna Hoover Wilanna Hopkins Ronald Hoskinson Pat Hoyle Beverly Hulse Mariorie Hundt Donna Hymbaugh Mary Iacobs Donna Iacovich Ianice Iones Larry Iosl David Iouvenaux Reatha Iungers David Keedy Ioyce Keller Marilyn Keith Dick Kisner Winona Kitchell Elizabelh Kite Ed Kline Iudy Knackmuhs Frances Koch Marion Kyle Art Lampitt Barbara Lantz Earl Lawson lim Lemon Iune Leslie Susan Lewis Sonia Liescheidt Ellen Lind Bertha Lindsey Doris Little Lynn Livengood Donald Lohrenz Sharon Look Darlene Lough Gene Lucy Thomas Luft Sharon Lundeen Leslie Matthew Arleta Maus Sharon McCarthy Ierry McFarden Diane McGarvey Rose Mary McGinnis Naomi McMullen Linda Merritt Ierry Miller Madilyn Moll Martha Moorhouse Iackie Mullinax Sharon Munge Sally Munson Ruth Nash Ida Neavear Pete Neikirk loan Nelson Betty Norris Carol Nugen lim Olt Beverly Oltman Nancy Parke Benny Parker Vernon Parkin Donna Paup Mary Payne Bonnie Peak Luella Peplow Gary Petty Gary Planck Emilie Plattner Iudy Polite Marjorie Prather lim Price Sally Price Ian Randolph Lola Remmers loyce Riviere Ianet Robbins Gloria Robinson Walter Rockhold George Roos Diana Rushford Ioan Rutledge Donna Lou Sanders Bill Saunders Larry Schaumleffel Betty Schimmelpfennig Paula Schleder Larry Schlottman Daranne Schott Kenneth Schorr Sharon Schwartz Ierry Sea Ioe Secrest Ioan Shaffer Iudith Shannabarger Dennis Sharp Fred Smalley Anna Smallwood David Smith Iune Smith Karen Smith Marcia Smith Marilyn Smith Martha Smith Sunny Soldwedel Darlene Stanton Gurney St. Clair Ka-rl Steckmann Charles Stewart Tom Stone Charles Storey Iack Storey Ierry Stout Arthur Strope lake Sturm Ioanne Swendsen Eileen Tape Victoria Tassart Tony Taubert Iuanita Templeton Ioan Thayer Wilma Thies Barbara Thomas Mazine Thompson WW? nur' 1'1 6-T' 34501 'Uv' We 1't 4 r ,A A g,m,,.g, in showing me the route to take 61519 Patty Tomlinson Roland Tomlinson Sandra Tomlinson Paul Tortorice Billie Lee Tosi William Tunis Carole Tuttle Sharon Upchurch Donald Vogelsang Sandra Volk Daniel Waddelow Donald Walker Alan Ward Iessie Ward Margaret Waremburg Linda Watson Kay Ann Westervelt Harriet Weyhrich Philip Wherry Helen Wilkinson Pat Williams Peggy Wilson Ronald Wilson Iohn Wiseman Bob Wolfer Pat Woll Tom Wright Ronald Ziebold Wayne Ziegenbein Marilee Zimmerman That I really feel at home. 441522 The editors and staff of the 1953 PEKINIAN feel indebted to the adver- tisers whose ads appear on the following pages, to the page sponsors whose ads appear throughout the book, and to the printer, engraver, artists, and photographers whose names appear below.
