ÂŤ 11  Senior Class It's memory time {or us seniors because as the '53 PEKINIAN rolls off the presses, our four years at Pekin High draw to a close. Many events have come and passed since that memorable first day when we became citizens of PCHS. Our first big social function was the Frosh-Soph party given in our honor, which we in turn sponsored the next year. Our Junior year was climaxed with the Junior-Senior Prom. The hours we spent planning and decorating were rewarded when we beheld The Show-boat docked at Pekin High's harbor. This, our last year, began socially with the Homecoming Parade and celebration. To raise money for our class gift, we sponsored the play George Washington Slept Here, and the Spring Dance. Many other events occurred during our Senior year . . . outstanding lyceum programs, the Sadie Hawkins Dance and the Sock Hop, and presentation of honorary awards to our deserving class members. Soon the fading strains of Pomp and Circumstance will be just a memory, and we'll have our diplomas, our hopes, and our dreams. Good-bye, Pekin High; it's been wonderful! There's mischief in this girll ÂŤ 38  Junior Class Even though we are anxiously looking toward our big senior year, it's fun to remember all the things we helped plan during this past year. Early in the school year we sponsored the play Our Town which was one of the biggest successes PCHS has ever seen. During the football season, we sold concessions at one of the games to help finance the prom. In January, committees were appointed by Darrell Lacock, our junior class president, and preparations for the big annual dance were made. Sharing honors with the prom was the election of a new student council president. The biggest event in our school calendar was, of course, the Frosh-Soph party. We green little Freshies, as we walked through the vast corridors of PCHS on our first day, looked longingly at those wise upperclassmen. Scared and nervous, we gazed dreamily at the wide, unending corridors, and wondered if we'd ever learn the ropes. But as days passed, our fears vanished and our lives settled into the daily routine of classes and activities. Our social life began with the Frosh-Soph party, which helped us to feel more a part of the school. Yet, we still are dreamers, dreaming of the days when we will be one of those wise upperclassmen. Fielding a team that could boast only six lettermen, none of whom had started a game the year before when Pekin had its most successful season in years, the Chinks of Jim Lewis compiled an amazing 8 won and 2 lost record which carried with it the Illini Conference championship and the Greater Peoria title. November 14 was a big night for Pekin football fans. The Chinks could by virtue of a victory over Woodruff grab the Illini and Greater Peoria championships. The whole town was talking about the unfortunate accident which put Jim Gorsage, popular fullback, on the sidelines. On the night of the game Gorsage's life hung in the balance. The team who v ould have naturally been fired up for the game were 100% more so after the Gorsage incident of the night before. Every single man played his heart out that night in an attempt to win this one for âJim . Spurred by Norm Hill and Captain Monge, the Chinks won the big one defeating the Warriors 20-13. An Urbana ball carrier is closed in on by three Chinks, George McLeod is making the tackle while Emil Monge (No. 58) and Mel Deskin (No. 66) make sure he doesn't get away. Don Taylor (No. 67) opens a hole for John Watson as Johnny attempts to go through a host of Canton tacklers. Pekin Courtmen Upset in Regional Although not being one of Pekin High's better basketball seasons, the year 1953 and its forerunner 1952 carried with it the thrills and chills of a typical Pekin High basketball season. Harry Anderson, in his second year as varsity coach, compiled a record of 14 wins and 8 losses. Some highlights of the campaign were the breaking of the Pekin High individual scoring record by Norm Hill, pint-sized guard, who pumped 40 points through the hoop in a contest with Peoria Spalding. Another outstanding part of the Chink hoop season was the double victory over always tough Peoria Manual, traditional Chink rival. Pekin beat the Rams first at beautiful Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse knocking the touted Rams in a 63-59 thriller. The home and home series came to Pekin and the Chinks made it two in a row beating the Peoria crew 70-61. An unusual kink in this year's chain was the game with East Peoria early in the season. Pekin, you might say, won on free throws. Only two lads, Hank Cakora and Norm Hill, could manage to make field goals and in the entire second half of the game only two fielders found their way home. Andy and opposing coach dispute a point with the Referees. Probably the most heartbreaking part of the whole season was the Chinks' defeat by Forman in semi-final play of the Pekin regional. The Chinks were favored to go all the way in this tourney but were subdued by a hot Forman team 69-66. Row 1: Jerry Cox, Bud Dolen, Gary Schrader, George McLeod, Jack Mitchell, Mike Dunn. Big 12 Champs Keith Stackhouse and Don Taylor Chink Grapplers Finish Impressive Season The PCHS Matmen, coached by Jim Custer, enjoyed another winning season. The Chink grapplers piled up an 11-2 regular seasonal dual meet record. They placed second in the Woodruff, Pekin, and Sterling triangular meet. The two dual meet defeats were handed the Chinks by two of the state's toughest wrestling powers, Waukegan and Moline. Pekin also claimed 3rd place in the Big 12 meet and 3rd in the state sectional. Don Hauser continued the Custer tradition of bringing home a place in the state tournament as he placed third in the 145-pound division. Accompanying Hauser to the state tournament were sophomore Don Taylor, junior Ben Rose, and senior Dale Sandrock. The outlook for the 1953-54 season is excellent as Jim Custer has practically all of his present squad returning, with the exception of a few. ÂŤ 116  Mgr. The team was made up mainly of returning letter-men of the 1951 State Championship squad. Highlights of the season were Don Lee s brilliant no-hitter over Toluca. Toluca could hit only two balls out of the infield, and they were easily taken care of. An important win for the Chinks was the 4-1 victory over Spalding on the new stadium diamond. After easily winning the district tourney the defending state champs rolled through the Bloomington Sectional. Glen Phillips' three-hit pitching and Pete Berardi's big bat were too much for Danville in the opener. Pekin came off the field with a 6-2 victory. The sectional final game was Pekin vs. LaSalle-Peru. It was Berardi and Phillips again sparking the attack, each slamming long homers. Phillips' homer came with the bases loaded to break a 1-1 tie. In winning, Pekin advanced to the state tourney. The Chinks were the first team in the tournament history to return for two consecutive years. Gorham eliminated the Anderson crew, 2-1, in a ten-inning thriller. The big blow was Tom Morgan's triple in the 10th inning. In the picture on your left, Poto Brown raps out a sharp single. And in the second. Whitey Phillips crosses home plate with another important run for the Chink baseball-ers. ' _ Whitey Phillips races in for a score. Coach Joe Vucich's men, having had a hard grind in their dual meets, grabbed second place in an important three-way meet held at Canton. Pekin then gained a fifth place in the Illini Conference meet held at the Chinks' Memorial Stadium. Highlights of the season were Gary Klue-ver's Frosh-Soph record discus heave against Peoria Central, which was marked in the record book at 127' 2Vi , and Jim Herget's running which played another important part in Pekin's season. Coach Vucich will be looking forward to having stronger track teams in the very near future because of the splendid job his Frosh-Soph thinlies came through with during the season. Bob McCordâBig 12 Champ Scott SchmidtâIllini Champ Coach Jim Lewis' Pekin High golf team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons during the year of 1952 winning 11 matches, losing 4, while tying one. Playing over the Parkview course, and on special occasions the Country Club of Pekin, the linksters scored defeats over such rivals as Manual, Central (2), Woodruff (2), Lincoln, Spalding (2), Galesburg, and East Peoria (2). They went down in defeat to Manual, Bloomington, Decatur, and Galesburg. The one tie was with Bloomington. As far as individual players went, the Chink golfers were led by the extremes of things, a freshman and a senior. Bob McCord, the senior, won the Big Twelve Championship by shooting a very good 76 on the tough combination of Parkview and Country Club courses. Scott Schmidt, the freshman, distinguished himself as a golfer by winning the Illini, tying for first in the District and qualifying for the state tourney, and finishing 4th in the Big Twelve meet. Youth dominated the '52 team as Lewis had at one time three freshmen on the first five; therefore he is expecting great things from them in the future. It was the third straight time that the Chinks captured that position. All the Mossmen finished in a 1 or 2 position. Buck Wright and Doyle Glass won over all their competition as they swept all dual, district and state matches, thus winning the state doubles crown. Pekin has had three state doubles champions in the last five yearsâthe first coming in 1948, the next in 1952, as Oscar Tharp and Wayne Steinke brought home the prize. Retaining it last year were Doyle and Buck. Working their way up to state competition were Keith Sanderson, Jim Gorsage, Chuck Reid, and Bradley Ward with the state champs heading the list. In the singles matches the Chinks won a total of 157 games out of the 171 they played. Such was the greeting Captain Lucile Colin, president of the junior class, gave us as we boarded the Showboat for its enchanting one-night stand at Pekin Harbor. Dancing the evening away to the music of Bill Oetzel's orchestra, we found ourselves in a setting of fish nets and showboat regalia. The evening was highlighted by the crowning of Phyllis Allen as the beautiful queen and Rich Lee as the handsome king. Leading the grand march, the royal court added a final touch to our glorious night. We left, each knowing that he had added to his memory book a lovely evening of unexcelled enjoyment.
