1949 RECORD Pekin 28 Carlinville O Pekin 19 East Peoria O Pekin 6 Canton 6 Pekin 12 Lincoln 7 Pekin 0 Manual 7 Pekin 14 Streator O Pekin 17 Central 7 Pekin 6 Spalding 26 Pekin 53 Bloomington O Pekin 13 Woodruff 14 The young 1949 edition of the gridiron Chinks amassed a total of 148 points compared to 67 for their ten opponents as they made Memorial Stadium's second season a second successful one, capturing six wins against three losses and one tie. Carlinville's Cavaliers were no match for the well balanced Mandarins in the season's opener. The Chinks administered their second straight whitewash- ing a week later at East Peoria. The Chinks retained the plowshare in their next outing, but were a little disappointing as they tied Canton. FOOTBALL The undefeated streak advanced to four against Lincoln even though the Railsplitters became the second team to cross the Celestial goal line. The stage was then set for the big game of the season against Manual's conference champions. Before a capacity crowd at Peoria Stadium, Pekin failed to score for the only time of the season, losing a pos- sible tie on a disputed play. The Mandarins, with sophomores seeing plenty of action, retumed to the victory trail by nipping Streat- or's Bulldogs in a rain-soaked encounter. Home- coming and the alumni queen, Ilene Ozella, spirited Pekin on to its fifth win, topping Central, 17-7. The big sore spot of the season came at the hands of the Spalding Irish who broke another Peoria Stad- ium game wide open with three last quarter touch- downs to break a 6-6 tie and give Pekin its only clear cut loss of the season. The Chinks then bounced back with a vengeance to wa.llop Blooming- ton by five touchdowns. The final game of the season upset the sports experts, as an unheralded Woodruff squeezed past a tired group of Chinks, 14-13.
