EST With a 'finished product' the goal of each, the high school of today and the mammoth twentieth-century industry are alike in many respects. Secondary schools sprinkled throughout the nation are specialists in the field of turning out young men and women, who launch into business life fresh from their preparatory training. The big business, on the other and similar hand, is equally adept at producing finished products of another kind. The teachers and instruc- tors in the schools play the most important part in shaping the student, and the great machines guided by skilled workers in the factories mold each product with infinite care to insure an output of the highest calibre. Both education and industry strive for perfection. Teacher, technician, and machine, all are results of extensive study. And all comprise a combination which works to provide the intricate mechanical equipment with a trained worker, and the worker with a iob. ,X fe li U Q Hen Y x,XlLlN0IJ' 9 23' 00,5 1 04 - VKA, ,, TZ,-,Q .,. , A 1 . M. Peterson. Mr. Peterson became principal at Pekin Community High School in September of 1938. But his tenure here was temporarily interrupted when, as a member of the Ot'ficer's Reserve Corps, he was called into active duty with the Army Air Forces in the spring of 1942. He left Pekin High as a second lieutenant, but returned three and one-half years later, proudly displaying the gold leaves of a maior. In September of 1945, Peterson packed away his otticer's uniform beside his honor- able discharge, exchanged a military for a civilian title, donned civilian dress, and once again became the maior of this school. NS.. Stockholders and Directors Representing the stockholders in the PCHS business, the Board of Educa- cation has a large and heavy investment. These men who direct the financial and operating end of the business include Mr. George B. Stolley, Mr. Paul Massey, Mr. Louis Hackler, Mr. I. E. Wilson, president, Mr. lewis Doren, and Mr. Allen Farmer, secretary. To keep the workers happy and-satisfied, as well as to direct character is the task of the Dean of Girls, Miss Edith Gramlich, and the Dean of Boys, Mr. Stephen B. Thomas. Their services as directors in the Student Council, Boys' Club, and Girls' Club keep them in big business. Personnel management carried out by Girls' Counselor, Miss G. Evelyn Todd, and Boys' Counselor, Mr. F. B. Stowe, aims to keep the workers of PCHS well adiusted to their iobs. By personal counseling and advice, they try to help students on their iobs and assist them in their plans for the future. With the end of the war, Mr. Mason Grigsby returned to PCHS from the United States Navy, He serves as Veteran's Counselor, assisting the returning veterans in readiusting and furthering their education. -- .QQ 5- V 5, - i . .-Q -if Ur i fi R ' 47 T55 13: .sw- Ai I kb L 'xii-:T .ir 'Lf -1 Foremen HEALTH, HOME ECONOMICS AND MUSIC Standing: left to right, Clarence Roth, Paul Chronic, Florence Diers, Harry Langley Seated: Verna Cooper, Lillian Fisher, Margaret Fisher AGRICULTURE, BUSINESS, AND MANUAL ARTS Standing: William Dowell, Mildred Jabsen, Floyd Lee, Robert Zilly, Maurine Kemp, LaVerne Patterson, George Stewart Seated: Norris Mitts, Milded Quinn, abry, J A Juliabel Strauch , V .,rt v 1 f .. t f . af .3 R . - ' 1. , I, X-f'i:..,1 . , , . H. Dowell. Students gain valuable experience thru application of classroom knowledge on the farm. All boys who have had agriculture and are taking it now belong to the Future Farmers of America, an organization de- signed to help make better future farmers of boys now in high school. They participate in state-wide contests and have received recognition in many farm activities. ART Training in the fine arts leads to a fuller appreciation of life. Art students with the efficient help and artistic touch of Mr. R. O. Bone seek through clay, charcoal, pastels, and paints to find the meaning of true beauty. These courses are also practical because they constitute fundamental parts of architecture ancl decorating. fo f wx 'N cjfbpg 1 1 p , fe l BUSINESS The world of business, varied and progressive, requires many well-trained, alert workers to keep industry keyed to efficiency. Secretarial training, dictaphone operation, machine calculation, and bookkeeping are only a few of the subiects taught in well-equipped classrooms with the latest ma- chines available. Extensive merchandising knowl- edge is gained from actual experience in stores by the sales class, supervised by Mr. Norris Mitts, in cooperation with Pekin merchants. 9 . Under the critical eye of Miss Lillian Fisher, a registered nurse, girls learn in home nursing classes what to do before the doctor arrives. The students' general health is watched closely and the height, weight, and physi- cal condition of each is of utmost importance to the health department. rg. if j 5 5 I 1 flfflf' gil ,WW .V 5-'QE' ,4 - Q 1 I 1 1 SQ, , 'Q 51 ,xl LANGUAGES One of the greatest barriers in constructing a world peace foundation has been the lack of a universal language. No such universal means of communication is taught at PCHS, but in its place are courses in three languages to satisfy the high school linguist. They are Latin, Spanish, and French, the latter re-instated since the end of the war, all two-year courses. With an ever-increasing demand for accomplished linguists, the language depart- ment, consisting of Miss lela Lockett, Miss Carolyn Arnold, and Miss Marguerite Tupper, looks for a busy schedule in the following post-war years.
