This award is sponsored by the Modern Miss Club and the selection is based on her poise personality scholarship leadership citizenship co-operation grooming and manners. In previous years girls who have received thi- honor are: Pauline Linn - '45 uanita Morris - '46 Marjorie Targonski - '47 Faye Marshall - '48 Emogene Mc Felea 49 Elizabeth Miller - '50 Betty Wilson - 51 and Sue Dennis - . This is the second time a valedictorian has been chosen as the Modern Miss. Betty Vi ilson - '51 was the winner of both honors. Here's another studious class, Sophomores, juniors, and Seniors. They seem to be under A spell, or maybe they are expecting a test. Lool Here the Seniors guided by Mrs. Mary Hilton are learning the way to do things safely but when class is over you should see us run up the stairs on the wrong side. We don't practice what she teaches. Q- Mr. Baker seems to know what he's talking about in his Geometry Class. This is the class where we learned to sew as in our past school years, we have learned to cook, manage a home, and care for a family, Here the girls are at work on their blouses. flnci- dently, this picture was posed during one of those rare, but hoped for, moments when Mrs. Baker left the room.l Li 7 Y' In the junior Home Economics class, they learned the fundamentals of preparing a meal. During the first semester, they are allowed to prepare and serve six meals, each girl per- forming the duties of host, hostess, maid in turn. THE STORY People do change and Papa Metzger is no exception. Their home in Milltown, Pa., was a pleasant, even-tem- pered household with the usual unconsequential family flares until Papa Metzger became a Shop Steward of his union at the mill. Sudden power and authority stretches his ego and Papa reaches far beyond his height. Illusions of his self-importance and duty to his union gradually estrange him from his wife, Carrie, and his three daughters, Beth, Ann and jenny, ranging in ages 15, 18 and 20 re- spectively, until Papa assumes the proportions of Dictator Dad. His first fall from grace in his family's eyes is the forgetting of his daughters' birthdays. They take this with- out a quiverg but when Papa begins to blow a whistle and has his family line up and wait on him like a retinue of flunkies, a rebellion is in the making. The crowning inci- dent that causes the family to about-face is his unforgivable offense of forgetting his Twenty-Fifth Wedding Anni- versary. It is then that Mama Metzger fCarriej makes her great decision. If Papa can have a union in the shop, she can have a union in the home. To strengthen her echelon she not only drafts her daughters into her union but conscripts her daughters' boy friends as wellg and Jenny's boy friend happens to be a young lawyer who is acting as an arbitrator in behalf of the owner of the mill. Even Precious Jenkins, who does housework for housewives when the urge hits her, suddenly finds herself involved in Mama's little union. But Papa remains adamant until Carrie strategically maneuvers her big push to bring Papa back into the family bosom. Her banner for the fray hung in the living room announces in large letters her battle slogan, PAPER PLATES FOR PAPA. Carrie knows when to attack and where it will hurt the most and Papa finds himself no match for a homemade union. Paper Plates or Papa Cast of Characters Papa William Metzger .... And as you can tell by this picture, we really used a technique. Here are Lew, Roy, and Larry just before they laid seige to the fans, acting in the typical Senior manner. By the way, believe it or not, they sold loads of popcorn. Below we find Opal and Ginger using the popcorn machine at school and selling popcorn to Beverly Cauble. The above picture was taken on Oct- ober Z7, one of the brightest days of our Senior year. Twenty happy humans re- ceived their rings, official declaration of their rank. This fact accounts for facial expressions both mournful, mystified, or just plain excited whichever the case may be. On our annual class party, we went to Stanaford Field in Louisville, to inspect the plane that was later to take us to Washington, D. C. Here is the group, minus three, taken on the landing strip with our plane as a background. 1 , l , A 4 This page is sponsored by: GEO. C. It was an added honor because one of their own classmates was chosen. The lucky girl was Carol june Martin. All year the students sold ice cream and soft drinks and carried on their different money-making projects with one goal in mind, the junior-Senior reception. lt was the big event of the year when the juniors entertained the Seniors. Y ' , A, Oscar Mindel receives the Free-throw Banquet Table Trophy from Murray Cauble. Although our P. T. A. organization is rather young, relatively speaking, it has accomplished much good and created an inspiring attitude among our students and faculty. The school is indeed grateful for the many ways in which the P. T. A. has assisted us and also for the fine co-operation in all educational and social affairs of our school and community. Through the efforts of the P. T. A. many new items of equipment have been added, .such as new back drapes for the stage, new radio and record changer, recording machine and play ground equipment. A fund is now being originated for a much needed new piano. During the past four years the P. T. A. has sponsored a banquet for the basketball players, yell leaders, and student managers. Prizes are awarded to each Senior student ofthe group and an opportunity is provided for other organizations and individuals at this time to give awards of appreciation. The Pekin Grange for the past four years, has presented to a boy on the varsity team, a sportsmanship award, selected by the votes of each and every official of all games played during the entire season. This effort of our Grange has helped materially in creating better inter-school relationships and makes it easier to maintain high ideals and standards in our own student group. The Cauble's Hatchery free throw award always creates within a player a desire and willing- ness to do his best, not only in the game itself, but in all his school efforts. The Senior boys themselves, this year, have shown their appreciation of the fine leadership of their coach, Mr. Kennedy, by presenting him with an appropriate plaque. When we arrived in Bloomington, we gathered in the foyer of the Music Hall, where we were met by a guide who was to escort us around the campus. This guide, the girl wearing the jacket in the scene at the right, took us through many buildings on the campus, and pointed out places of interest, such as the we1l'house, Jordon River, and others. She also told us some fascinating and amusing stories about these historic spots. as 4 ' f fb-if . K The Marching Hundred of the Indiana University Band, pictured at the right, displayed their talent and noted form before and at the half of the game. This band is the most famous of our University bands. It always receives invitations to perform at all the big sporting events in our country and even attended the inauguration of our President Eisenhower, january Z0, 1953. Here is one of the busses that took us to Bloomington, Indiana last November 18, for the annual Indiana University High School Day. Although we had to get an early start there were enough rise and shiners to make two bus loads. The kickoff! 2 l Indiana University versus Temple in a very exciting game with Indiana emerging victorious. And all we loyal Hoosiers were reall proud of our fight- ing team and the colorful display they made.
