Forty-nine freshmen, eager to do the best they could in their 'Green Freshmen' year, entered Pekin High School. They were: Dessie Abbot, Jean Applegate, Everett Backus, William Baumann, Lloyd Blanken- baker, Bill Blankenbaker, Marie Borders, Elmo Brough, jlohn Bush, Mark Colglazier, Bessie Curtis, Robert Denny, Lowell Denton, Thelma Durham, William Elrod, Mary Ann Floyd, William Fulk, Bruce Gray, Norman Her- thel,.Carrie Maude Jean, Anita Johnson, Pete Kay, Della Lewis,, Mabel Mahureon, Beulah Marshall, Faye Marshall, Dale McKinley, Donald Mor- row, Helen Mull, Herbert Nale, Joellen Owsley, Alverna Pixley, Lillie Pixley, Mildred Pixley, Virginia Prather, Richard Purlee, June Rick- ard, Don Roberts, Royal Roland, Roy Russell, Kathryn Simpson, Marjorie Tash, Helen Voyles, Robert Walton, Paul Warman, Glen Wilson, Marcella Zink, Guy Dean Bush, and Jackie Short. All survived initiation land under our sponsor, Mr. Markland, we started climbing. Lloyd Blanken- baker was chosen President, Billy Baumann, Vice-President, Marcella Zink, Secretary and Treasurer, Pete Kay and Joellen Owsley, News Re- orters . P We entered our sophomore year with an enrollment of 59 members. Those we missed were: Dessie Abbot, Lowell Denton, Mary Ann Floyd, Della Lewis, Mabel Mahuron, Beulah Marshall, Alverna Plxley, Lillie Pixley, Royal Roland, Roy Russell, Paul Warman, Glen Wilson, and Guy Dean Bush. Three new members entered, Pauline Griffen, Lillie Mae Philpot, and Rita Thompson. Our sponsor for this year was Mr. Morgan and our class officers were: Billy Baumann, President, Herbert Nale, Vice-President, Faye Marshall, Secretary, Rita Thompson, Treasurer, Helen Mull, News Reporter. This year was a hard year for everyone ex- cept Bill Blankenbaker, who always had time to play a Joke on someone. However, we had time to enjoy two skating parties with most of us learning to skate the hard way. Little Jackie Short grew up and be- came known as Jack. We wonder if it was because he started going with the girls--or should we just say Marcella. We moved forward into our junior year. Since we had gotten this far up the ladder, we were determined to go on. Lillie Mae Philpot moved away this year and four new members Joined us: Betty McGlothl1n, Carl True, James Wills, and Lowell Bmllington. we chose Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Whiteman as sponsors. This year Billy Fulk served as Presi- dent, Don Roberts, Vice-President, June Rickard, Secretary, Faye Mar- shall, Treasurer, and Joellen Owsley, News Reporter. The sales of ice-cream and cold drinks at noon were taken over by our class. we topped the records of previous years with our sales of magazines from Curtis Publishing Co. Our class play 'Her Emergency Husband', spon- sored by Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Whiteman, broughthforth much laughter and many' compliments from the audience. We-scored another run when Jo- ellen Owsley was elected cheer leader from our class. Our Junior-Sen- lor Reception was held in the Terrace Room at the Kentucky Hotel, Louisville. We entertained with a banquet and party--master ef cere- monies and floor show. Everyone had a grand time. At last, but yet all too soon, that day had come when we enter- ed school as seniors. Thirty-nine members had reached the top and were ready to carry on their work. We chose our jewelry and had our pic- tures taken as a remembrance of our senior days. We took over the pub- lication of 'The Commentn and proceeded to make a yearbook 'The Com- mentator'. Two of the cheer leaders came from our class this year -- Joellen Owsley and June Rickard. We also had several boys who played basketball. The officers chosen to guide our class this year were: Don Roberts, President, Faye Marshall, Vice-President, June Rickard, Trea- surer, Joellen 0wsley,Secretary, and Marie Borders, News Reporter. Our sponsors were Mrs. Baker and Mr. Stevens. As a future reminder of the Class of '48, we have left the school a new score board to be used by future Pekin High School basketball teams. A we have come to the fork in the road where we will all be travel- ing different gaths, but we will long remember the happy hours spent at Pekin High chool. We wish to take this opportunity to express our sincere apprecia- tion to our parents and the faculty who have helped us to attain our goa . Faye Marshall Thelma Durham ' 25 F V, Sf 3 ,y 5 jk vp. All of sa sudden, there was a flash of light across the screen, and there we were looking 10 years into the future. The first thing we saw was grandma and grandpa Baker each holding one of their twin grandchildren. Mr. Baker has done well since he discovered oil on his Pekin property. The old town was scarcely recognizable since the great oil boom. At the Gaiety Theater on Main Street, we found Darwin Stevens selling tickets and yelling at the top of his voice nuome one, Come all and see the great Hawiian Hula Dancers.W Reluctantly passing on the television camera next took us to 'Hilton's Hamburger Heaven' where we found our old friend, Mary Hilton busily grinding up old shoe leather and inner tubes into delicious Hamburger Special. we were startled by the sudden appearance of our friend, Qpp Brice Rumble, who entered with his kit of surgical tools and began operating on a customer, Map William Purcell, who had accidentally taken a bite of the Hamburger Special. Careening wildly down the street came a taxi cab, which we saw was driven by Bill Abel. It crashed into a big black Tucker Limol- sine owned by Ew5e Q, Martin, and chauffeured by Mrs. Cecil Dunham. Witnesses to the accident were Jack Q Marcella Short and thefr three sets of twins. Mr. Q Mrs. Short were taking their cEIldren down to Carrie lnanls Kaiser-Frazer Agency where she gave piano lessons on the side. Going on we entered Mildred Pixley's 'Night Club' where she seem- ed to be featuring Mark col Iazier s Rootin' Tootin' Dixie Land Band. Also on the program were t e ee'Stooges' Billy Fulk, Robert Denny, and Elmo Bropgh. ' T D Standing on the corner in front of the Kaiser k Frazer Agency was Billy Baumann selling 'hot' copies of the Pekin Banner, edited by ggi - s. Carl True. Across the street was auctioneer, Pete gal, who was selling Dale McK1nley's livery stable because of bankruptcy. Dale had gone broke on account of too much credit. Lloyd Blankenbaker bought the property so he could construct James Wil s a 5uIIding for an Essex Sales and Service Company. Strange to sayg Lloyd is still a bachelor because Rita Thompson Jilted him for Norman Her hel. The young couple are very happy in their one room mansion designed and built by Red Blankenbaker Construction Company, which recently built an additioE'to the Everett Backus Upholstery Emporium. The new edition will be occupied by Eadam Uoellen Owsley, who will give voice lessons. political parade headed by Ma or and Garbagg Collector Herb Nags, Down the street came a gigantic Spud Roberts, Do Catcher John Bush, who were campalgging for re-election. ' We saw two ragged looking girls gpg and Thelma Durham, gazing hungrily into the show window of Bessie Curtis's butcher shop. Bessie appeared in the door swinging a meat cleaver and chased them down the street. They ran on down to the Railroad yards and climbed into a box car, but soon were chased out by 211,11 Llggg who was Brakeman on the Monon Railroad's fast special 'The Pekin Limited'. Swinging down the street hand in hand came Qgp Morrow and Betty Mcilothlin who were attending Pekin University where Professor Bruce Gray was teaching Geology. They entered a Millinery -SIT:'1T'E T565 North Main Street operated by two old maids June Rickard and Fayg Mar- gg5gl,'Their lives are quite successful without men.
