is 5 ,ve if' S .e X f 17 h x g3, 'f' On a chilly morning in May, 19145, a large group of people watched in horror as flame curled through the upper story of the memorable brick building which for so long had been their school. Sobs could be heard as the stage fell with a crash to the ground floor. In the shower of sparks that followed, one could see the ghosts of years gone by. Had you been there at the time, you might have seen a young man standing in the glow of tl! flames. Perhaps in his mind he saw the championship teams in football, basketball, ami track, he might have recalled the glorious days when he and his team mates were awarded those treasured trophies. Those trophies, which once proudly bore the championship credo for Peetl, were nel only molten globs of metal. A young girl might have been seen weeping as her old Alu Under quickly was converted into a rubble of ashes. In her mind's eye she might have seen such productions as 'Good Gracious Grandma, 'The Black Derby,' 'Little Miss Tatters,' or 'Who Wouldn't Be Crazy'3 it seemed that the classes had always been first in drama as well as music, declaration, business. arithmetic and orchestra. In the cold light of that early morning, you not only saw a school go up in smoke, but a monument that once seemed indestructible. Now there are only pictures. Look at the picture above of the old study-hall auditorium. What do you see? The old clock over the north stage door says 9:20 a. m. Banners flank the old stage, and trophies cover the table to the right. The part of the auditorium that the picture does not show is the east end. The books, papers, and wide open windows were back there. Do you remember when you sharpened your pencils and then lingered as long as you dared, wishing that you were out in that beautiful outdoors. Stop and think. what can you remember about this old building? Can you see the old worn desks, Chow mary hundred initials were carved on their surfaces?J? Can you remmber such name as Clair skold, Henri P1-ude'homme, hzrnest Kraxburger, Charles Neal, and Flora Allison? Yes, these were the principals who helped mold your young lives. Or maybe you can remember Coach llcPheters giving one of his too few pep talks before a game? Remember how he believed in rigid training rules and no girl friends? Perhaps ycm see yourself standing on the stage, with Laurens Ednundson or Eleanor Billsborrow at the piano, practicing that blue-ribbon trio, quartet or chorus. Hel about the practices for plays and operettasg or the times when the small back stage rooms were so crowded that you overflowed into the principal's office? Maybe you can recall the time, although you know it was taboo, that you slipped out on the old third floor fire escape. Did I say that there were only pictures left? No, there is really more. There are mm per-ple who jump at the chance to talk about the 'good old days.' Maybe if you talk long enougx you will hear something about the good old nights, also. The mothers, fathers, uncles, and aunts of this generation can draw a more vivid picture of the old school house than am' camera could ever catch. Over a cup of coffee, at a ball game, or at sam' other get-together, alumni can be found reminiscing and remembering the good old days. To the present generation this picture may mean nothing, but unknowingly it is :Lndelibly stamped into your background. We have faith in your capabilities, and we know you will 3831110 up to our expectations. Dolores Nelson CC1ass of '39J Robert Wood CClass of 'h7D
