OJ Symbol of strength, held firmly by its roots, the OLD OAK still stands after 175 years. Here lies a parable. Things seen are the out- come of things unseen. The strength of the seen is determined hy the strength of the un- seen. A man whose life is rooted in the funda- mental realities will stand up under blows of fate and fortune which fell him who has failed to send down strong roots. 9 Avaya fm vw 54. ,QW bfi A ev 9' X1 fi ' 'wixif - Q s- ' M N 5 Swv, 1 ..Q- , 12' 9555 . CORNELL UNIVERSITY gfcwa ,Ma for? R. MOORE, Members of the Faculty, Honored Guests, and Fellow- Classmates: As Historian of the Class of 1949 of Peekskill Military Academy, I am honored to address you and to record the history and achievements of our class. During the many years of growing friendships, we have had many happy memories and a few sorrows. It is of the achievements of sixty seniors that I Wish to speak tonight. Our class had its beginning seven years ago when our campus was blessed with our highly-respected Battalion Commander and Class President Kenny MKissy Brown. During that same year, Kenny was soon joined by your Class Treasurer, Bob nMoaner,7 Kiebitz. The next year brought to our class some outstanding classmates: Bob 64Pretty Boy Lopez, that man from the Florida waterways, Joe uShovel Lang, Dick uChopin,, McCoy, bringing with him his piano, organ, and trombone, the man who made us laugh, .lord uThe Turk Isaiou, and the unforgettable Dick 'LVulture Lester with his familiar remark: uLet's go out and block some trees. The year 1944 brought to us a member from the ancient world, Steve uGreek,, Stellakis. In the fall of 1945 several new members joined our class: wHandsome Dick Costa, that hater of women, 'cLefty Lou Ferraguzzi, another laughable mem- ber, Ed MI got a new toyw Gausg uBlack Julien I-Ioyosg G'Mary', Don Inesong Clayton uGot a butt?,' Ingham, uCrazy,, Charlie McKevett, Jorge Mortensen, John uMoney Bagsn White, the one who buys a new car when the old one has its ashtrays full, uBumber', Dan Dionis, the wooer of Women, and strong man uBruno Burk Zanft, who breaks a piece of chalk with one finger. In 1946 our class increased considerably. Among those entering was our out- standing actor of the stage, Ray Hliebelw Kessler, followed by a fellow-actor, Bob 44Mac'7 McCracken. The year also brought to us one of our greatest athletes, Bob HBlade7' Goldfein, who proved to be the iron man. The class ranks were swelled by the arrival of Reese 'LNeedle', Sherman, our capable editor, Joe MLouis Flooglen Accetta, our talented cartoonist, uSimple Sid Risking Nick uSlasher Marrano, who brought with him his not-to-be-forgotten knives, Stan Lovel fexcuse mej ulaovern Klein, who came to visit the fair sex of Peekskillg Louis flap de Leong Milton HCrudy Fisher, who calls himself the Don .luan of P. M. A., and Mike Henriquez with his Mexican cavalry. To join the mischief- making group, came Ben MRodent,7 Balsley, Al '5Toto Baquerog Tony uGog- gles Gardner, Jose uHamlet Lugog Peter '4Sparks,' Watjeng Dick uGrumpy7, Baldwin, and Norman HFarb7' Goldfarb. The year 1947 brought the majority of our classmates from the countries down under. These members, usually quite when alone, made considerable noise when together. They also were great lovers. Outstanding of the group was Bill 45 MCholo Bujanda. With him came Frank uPancho', Abreu, Eladio uGordo Anton, the class mystery man, ,lose uAlambre', Aponteg Carlos uGu1liver Arnoldsong Ramon 4LBicicleta Baez, Rufino M1-'alitan Gonzales, alias L'Fifi g Clemente ulVleatball,' Mantica, Pablo uChombo Mantica, Carlos uCharleyw Perez, Oscar '41 won't do itf' Rios, Arnaldo L4Wait a moment Ortiz, Leonidas MChocolate7' Tejeda, and Luis Tagliaferro. ' The year also saw the arrival of a valuable addition to the football team, our fast guard, Dave 4'Mole Plager. Other members to enter were NDing Dongl' Day, Howie HCreeper Goldstein, known for his description of a cigarette, the story-listener Stan '4125th Street Katz, the race horse owner, Burt uGot a comic book?', Carlish, and Hugo 4'Foothills,' Munzer. Three new members joined our class in 1948. Outstanding was the star of our football team who scored 111 points, Mike uAnd then there was the time when 1 was out with Peachesl' Mikulics. Next, the master of studies, Johnny 441,11 get that key or elsen Medal, and another famous story teller, Alan Wllhe Railn Bannister. Our class has won recognition in various fields. Ken Brown and Reese Sherman have labored hard and long helping the class in numerous ways. Dick McCoy and Ken Brown have had their names on the high honors roll during the years. The football team, aided by Mike Mikulics and Bob Goldfein, has had a near- undefeatable season. Both Bob and Mike were chosen for the All-Metropolitan Football Team and were named Outstanding Players for the 1948 season. The Senior play, A Bell for Adano, was a successful performance and received excel- lent notice. Our dances were outstanding and received enthusiastically by the Corps. The class gift was a set of 250 hymnals. THE REVEILLE, our school newspaper, was awarded a third place award in 1948 and a second place award in 1949 by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. This high merit was due mainly to our industrious adviser, Mr. Richmond Scott, who has been unceasing in his efforts to better the paper. At Government Inspection in 1948, the Corps proved itself highly satisfactory, receiving a rating of SUPERIOR by the War Department, the highest rating it has ever received. The Rifle Team in 1949 developed into a powerful team to end high among the schools of the country. Among the Senior Class we can boast 152 Varsity letters, 27 gold keys, 16 commissioned officers, 29 non-commissioned officers and numerous other honors. To Mr. Ladd, our adviser, who has encouraged us greatly during the past four years, our grateful thanks. We, the forty-niners, hope that the undergraduates will better our achieve- ments in the years to come. Tomorrow We shall have graduated and leave P. M. A. that has been our home for the past few years. To the undergraduates we leave our best wishes. To Mr. Moore and the faculty, we thank you for a job well done. The first V, C. activity was the traditional HalloWe'en dance. Within the club ping-pong and pool tournaments were held during the year and the champions represented PMA in the Westchester County Private and Parochial A. A. tourna- ments. . The Club voted to forego the usual winter sports feed and to give financial aid toward a bigger and better Winter sports banquet for all the boys Who earned varsity letters during the term. 72 Le CM ASICALLY the glee club offers more pleasure than any other activity at P. M. A., for everyone likes to sing and especially to harmonize. Although it requires concentrated and continual work on the individualas part, its mem- bers Will agree that the result is worth the effort. This latter fact is particularly true of this year's unit. Despite a dearth of members the glee club has achieved success. A Christmas festival, consisting of the best and foremost Christmas music, was given in December and enjoyed most heartily. The St. Paul's Methodist Church Choir and many of the faculty sang with the glee club in this concert. At the date of this writing, a joint concert with the Drew Seminary Glee Club and the Palm Sunday concert are pending. These concerts should make the glee club's year even more successful. 73 Standing-Mr. Scott, Goldfein, Ferraguzzi, Katz, Isaiou, McCoy, Fry, Kiebitz, Tarnawa, Munzer, Brown, Riskin, Sherman, Ingham, Lopez, Marrano, Plager, Medal, Abuza, Fendler, Klein, Snyder. In 1948, THE REVEILLE joined The Columbia Scholastic Press Association. For the first time THE REVEILLE competed with 1000 other school papers and won third place award. This year's staff has labored incessantly to continue this good work. Their efforts were well rewarded when THE REVEILLE, competing with 3500 other papers, was awarded second prize by the C. S. P. A. Although this year's team did not have such good material as of 746 and 747, the coaching of Major Connolly en- abled us to amass a finer record than any PMA squad has attained since 1931. According to Major Connolly, the team was better this year because it had played under the same system for three years. PMA OPPONENT THE GAME Hendrick PMA's first opponent-defeated in a one-sided battle. Hudson Outstanding were Mikulics, Goldfein, Plager, and Ham- 30 14 par, who was injured in the first quarter. In a hard-fought game throughout, PMA beat the Hal- Haldane dane gridders. The Haldane team, fast and scrappy, 18 13 made most of their yardage around the ends. Again Mikulics spearheaded the play. 83 PMA OPPONENT Saint Peter,s 7 0 i Brewster 19 12 Concordia Collegiate Institute 0 6 Hackley 25 0 Scarborough 31 0 Irving 39 20 Total 169 64 THE GAME Winning its third consecutive game, PMA dumped an unbeaten Saint Peter's team. It was an off-day for the Cadet eleven. Had it not been for the outstanding play- ing of Mikulics and co-captains Wlii'te and Coldfein, the uPetes', might have capitalized on this. A cocky undefeated Brewster squad came to PMA only to find that the Cadet eleven was too much for them. The score, however, is not indicative of the actual play since the Cadets, total yardage was twice that of Brewster. Although both teams amassed the same amount of yard- age, the PMA Gridders took their only defeat of the season. The Cadets failed to make use of several scoring opportunities and received penalties at inopportune times. The huge college squad was held in check by the heads-up defensive play of Goldfein, Plager, Ferraguzzi, and Sullivan. Mikulics was injured in the first part of the game. PMA went over the last white line 5 times and beat a much heavier squad. The second team played much of the game. Kirsch made a spectacular run to set up Bill Wfard for the final touchdown. The most spectacular play of the game was Ward,s 71-yard touchdown return of a punt. The second team was given a chance to play because the Cadet first stringers were too powerful for the visit- ing squad. PMA trounced over a rough Irving squad in the Hnal game of the season. Irving gained most of their ground in the air and gained only 86 yards rushing, 56 of these against the second team. Won 75 Lost 1 81 2 v Q'-fL'fE-Eb :LEG3 xv atm - REG? -. . Cadets Hampar and Huber were elected co-captains for 1949-50. Hampar was injured in tl1e first game and was unable to play for the rest of the season. His presence on the field would have considerably helped the team. Head Coach Connolly, a great coach and splendid fellow, was invaluably assisted by Lt. Anderson and Mr. Grantham. However, unexpected changes in key positions caused the team to fluctuate from the heights of success to the depths of despair. Captain Ken Brown and William Valero, fullbacks, teamed up with goalie Dick Strauss to set up a close defense that held six opponents scoreless. The for- ward line did some clever passing. The 45 Cadets have enjoyed a year of fun, happiness, and learning. In Academics, each Cadet is measured by the Educational Records Bureau Achievement Tests given in October and in March. Thus we are able to see the actual gain during the year. A total overall gain for 1948-49 was 22 months. The reason for this great improvement is small classes, remedial work, individual attention. In Athletics, the 8th grade was added to the Jr. School for sports. We won 2 soccer games, tied one, and lost one. In football, we lost two games and won one. In basketball, we won 8 games and lost one. The boxing team put on two exhibitions and the swimming team was ready for competition but were unable to find schools with which to compete. The school has been active in entertainment. At the Christmas Pageant a choir of 38 received high praise for their part. The writing and publication of THE TATTLER has kept the P. M. A. family informed of the happenings and doings of all. The Military Department has carried out the assignments to near perfection. Co. D has Won the parade twice and has participated in parades in the town. The cooperation of the parents in giving their time, energy, and contributions have aided in the success of the school year.
