Rogers, B. 89 Led by the determined play of the Cold offense and the mongeese defense, the Peddie varsity football team streaked to a 6-1 season for 1973. The regular season began as the Falcons traveled to Media, Pa. to do battle with Williamson Trade School, one of the toughest opponents on the schedule. The game was not decided until the fourth quar- ter, but Peddie emerged victorious 14-9. This victory set the stage for the rest of the season. Following victories over Hun Q27-7j, Mercers- burg Q24-14j, and Admiral Farragut, and a can- cellation of the Newark game, the team suf- fered their first defeat at the hands of Hill. Culminating the season our revitalized contin- gent hosted their perennial rival Blair Acad- emy. Although minus its head coach, john jones, and several other key personnel, Ped- die ended the season with a hard-hitting and satisfying 22-6 victory. Although the 6-1 season was naturally the result of tremendous effort, hard work, and sacrifice by the entire team, several individual efforts stand out. The electrifying runs and pass catches of senior tailback Cary Cumbs brought more than one Peddie fan to his feet. Cary amassed 788 yards rushing in only 5 games 17.44 yards 7 carryj, accumulated 987 yards in total offense, and scored 64 points. Gerard Coeke, passed for 564 yards Q22 for 39j, and Thom Hall, with his consistent run- ning and blocking, rounded out the Peddie backfield. Led by such defensive stalwarts as Dave Monahan, Ken Deon, Charlie Dawson, and others, the Falcon defense allowed only 9.1 points per game. The methodical blocking of the offensive line, led by Dave Dimon, Bill Sanders, and Ted Dolci, continuously opened up chasm-like holes in the opponents forward wall. junior split-end Pete McConnell com- plimented the Peddie running attack with his downfield blocking and pass receptions. 5 3' ' xx 'ij- in wir j X .. 1' t 4 ,igrwtsf 4 , 0,54-ga-.f3Yv,' T A 1 ' 34, ' win. ms l.V. The 1973 Varsity Soccer Team's record of 2-11 is not as disappointing as it ap- pears to be. After coming off a poor season last year, the squad voted to hold a pre-season camp this year. This not only showed the team's desire to play, but also their efforts to condition and improve skills. As fate would have it, the team was plagued with injuries and six, devastating one-goal losses. Despite this fact, the morale was kept alive by Coach Rud- nyanszky, the tri-captains Larry Lee, Scooter Masland, Gene Quin-n, and the team's hustle and determination. Typical examples of the team's hard luck were 1-0 and 2- 0 losses to Lawrenceville and Notre Dame, two perennial soccer powers. The defense, led by fullbacks Dave Rogers and Scott Carduner and by goalie Mitch Block, consistently stymied the opponents offense. The high points of the season were 1-0 and 2-0 victories over Delbarton and arch-rival Blair. The team also found it- self in the winner's circle after beating the faculty and the girls' field hockey team in post-season play. The season came to an end with a steak dinner at Emerson's and with fond memories of departing seniors. it-4 fl I8 -Larry Lee and Scooter Masland A4-riff-.. M... 1. Quinn 2. Lee, L. 3. Masland 4. CFOSS countr A promising team developed into an awesome power for Mr. Lawson as this year's cross-country team proved to be the best in Peddie's history. Excellent recruiting, a strong returning nucleus, and some pleasant surprises combined to form a running ma- chine which left little to doubt as to who was the top team in the state. Completely outclassing the rest of the field, Peddie domi- nated this year's state meet in record-breaking style, winning by over 45 points A common sight this year tand probably next yearl was l.P. Flynn leading a tight pack which constantly rotated positions. Mike Price, Steve Ranson, Mike McCrabb, Bill Stuart, and Kevin Norcross always filled these positions, the question was, in what order would they fall? For the seniors this year's success was particularly sweet as it concluded a long, tough struggle to the top. Competing in their final year for Peddie were Glen Grossman, Art Ammermuller, Bill Stuart, and Mike McCrabb. Each looks forward to continuing his success in college. To fill the vacated spots left by the seniors is a strong l.V. team, which duplicated the varsity's state championship feat. A fresh- man, Paul Mucciarone, consistently led the assault, but was al- ways pressured by Marc Mowrey, Dan Bulk, and Glen Grossman for that top spot. Peddie, in breaking the ice with their first state championship cross-country team, seems to have begun a long-awaited dynasty of their own. -Mike McCrabb 95 1. Stuart, D. 2. Mucciarone 3. Robison 4. Katzbach 97 With a combination of excellent coaching and a lot of hard work, the girls' field hockey team launched its first season. Although the team got off to a slow start, dropping three scrimmages to East Windsor Q4-13, Hightstown Q5-OJ, and South Brunswick U -OJ, this was attributed to lack of ex- perience. The team consisted primarily of fresh- men and sophomores, most of whom had never held a stick in their hands! Backed by coaches Monahan and Creeden and inspired by excellent co-captains Wendy Hill and Myma Weisberg, the team put in many hours of hard practice and were rewarded with steady improvement. They came back from early losses to Hun Q4-Ol and Allentown Q1-0, to out- play Pennington and gain their first victory 2-0. The team also fought a hard game against a tough Blair team and tied them 0-0 on Blair Day. Encouraged by fine play on the part of Su Cal- 0 ' -1 - 1,1 f . lahan, Donna Chytilo, Amy Finn, Mary Ford, Anne Ghitman, Robin Hawekette, and Pippa Holman, the coaches were equally pleased with the great improvement shown by Stacy Katz- bach, Cathy Kozinski, Pat Miller, Linda Perritt, and Diana Poreda and the great spirit and flexi- bility exhibited by loan Selecki, Michelle Smith, Mary Stella, Valerie Stoyakevytch, Chris Thomp- son, Nancy Toscano, and julie Watts. All told, this year's hockey team had a reason- able amount of success and a lot of fun. Outside events were the faculty-team game, where the girls defeated the faculty women 3-1, and Ped- die's first Sockey game, where the girls took on the soccer team in a half hockey-half soccer match. -Mary Stella ' ' M W 1 ml - 191 A Mm I 1 x :M H I ' ' ul '1 i li w I'!r??ig:5 I I Inl1irI'lirN ' + 1 ' uw , ,H ww' ww M I. The record will show that Peddie won 10 and lost 9. The record will also show that Peddie was involved in nine games decided by four points or less, but, unfortunately, the Falcons came up short in six of these contests. a two- point overtime loss to eventual state champion Law- renceville and a one-point loss to Hun in the semi-final round of the state tournament were the toughest setbacks to accept. On the brighter side, The Falcons upset New York City power Horace MannfBarnard and took Phila- delphia prep power Penn Charter down to the wire before losing in the finals of the first Peddie School Invitational. Two victories over archrival Blair and a thrilling Alumni game also highlighted the season. Lacking a dominant player, the Falcons relied heavily on hustle, teamwork, and a scrappy pressing defense. Our de- fense was tough, but, unfortunately, we were not opportun- ists on offense. Too often, we caused turnovers but failed to score, or we missed foul shots in clutch situations. How- ever, this team was competitive all season and earned the respect of every opponent on its schedule. 6'5 senior Rich Carstens led the team in scoring, shoot- ing percentage, and rebounding. Senior Mark Garrow played both forward and guard while contributing 13 ppg. Senior Chris Cellary was a steady player all season and a key man in our full-court press. 5'10 senior Gerard Coeke quarterbacked our offense, keyed our press, and was Mr. Hustle. 6'2 junior and captain-elect Kevin Norfleet im- proved significantly as the season progressed and should develop into a top player next year. e MI V 'Y mis. 34.9 f jf 'F31'? The undefeated varsity compiled eleven dual meet wins without a loss, highlighted by Peddie's first win ever over perennial swim power and rival Lawrenceville, 113-58 at Peddie. The varsity began its season with impressive show- ings in two pre-season relay meets at Hill and Mont- clair and December dual-meet wins over Seton Hall and the U.S. Naval Academy Plebes in Annapolis, Maryland. Captain Chuck Hector, Alan Clancy, Bob Peizer, jim Anderson, Gary Pabst, and the emer- gence of freshmen Beaver O'Hara and Bill Steven- son gave warning to Peddie's opponents that the Fal- cons were suddenly regarded as a top-area team. After February dual wins over 1973 New jersey High School Champion Moorestown, powerful German- town, and Eastern power Mercersburg Academy, the close-knit swimmers went to the Eastern lnter-scho- lastic Swimming Championships at Lawrenceville. Finishing third behind national record breaking Pine Crest of Florida, and Mercersburg, and completely overpowering Hill, Peddie swam to one of the finest showings in the school's history, breaking seven of ten school swimming records. The 200 yard medley relay of Tom Cenber, Chuck Hector, jim Anderson, and Alan Clancy, set a school record of 1:40.2. Gary Pabst eclipsed the 200 IM 12:04.71 and the 100 backstroke 156.81 records and jim Anderson lowered the 100 butterfly mark to 53.7. O'Hara's school record performances of 1:47.8 in the 200 free and 4:55.5 in the 500 free were phenomenal for a freshman. O'Hara teamed with Pabst, Clancy, and Lance Duffy for a 400 free relay record of 3:19.6. l Peddie Opp 44 Seton Hall 39 102 U.S. Navy Plebes 70 109 Malvern 63 108 Newark Academy 48 63 Montclair 20 67 Pingry 13 113 Lawrenceville 58 109 Blair 57 120 Moorestown H.S. 51 94 Germantown 78 127 Mercersburg 44 'Uno lg. hw,-f+vmg,,,, DHBV lg, if ,. , fmwwfwwn wwmwwww- ww ...,.wi,,,uwe ,, ,,.,..f.2wmlNf-1 J, . The team began the season with only five returning lettermen: senior co- captains jeff Mohr and Bob Hastings, jun- iors Barry Wham and Ted Gribbel, and sen- ior Mike Thompson. New additions to this year's team were senior co-captain john Wohlfahrt, senior Nick Hano, and two freshmen, Kevin Cooper and Tim Cuesta. Also returning were senior net keeper Mark Harris and senior Bill Welychko. We opened our season january 11 against powerful PDS and lost 10-0. This game set the stage for a long road down- hill. With each game we played, we saw lapses on both offense and defense, which, in spite of some improved play, kept us from winning. We finally got on track near the end of the season when we won four of the last five games, ending with a 4-11 record. The leadership shown by co-captains Mohr, Hastings, and Wohlfahrt provided the team with spirit and the will to never give up. This winning spirit finally resulted in wins over Hun 15-Oj and Montclair Q6-31, perhaps our two best-played games of the season. -jeff Mohr 3 1 ai ., Q? 2 Q 'l 3 . 1 . Q - . . Marty White led the pitch- ing department with a 5-4 record, Art Ammermuller was 2- 2, while Larry Hamnett, despite a record of 0-1, pitched fine ball in relief. Co-captain Chris Cellary, who had a sore pitch- ing arm all season, turned in some fine plays at second base. Utility infielder Gene Quinn and outfielder Don DeAngeIis were seniors who made fine contributions to the team. Highlights of the 1974 season were a 4-1 win over a very strong highland park team, victories over Blair and L'Ville, and a 21-5 trouncing of Blair. Q 1 it 'x i r i i i l.V. The best personal record on the team was held by senior Andrew Cole- ridge, who compiled a season record of 9-2-1, with senior Larry Schulman not far behind with a record of 8-1. Playing at the diffi- cult number one position, senior Gerard Coeke managed a record of 7-3-2, while team captain Brian Goerke finished the season with a 6-6 record at the number two position. After the first three matches this year we were 3-0. Our fourth match was against the Hill School away and was our first loss. Gerard Coeke and sophomore lay Denney at the third position were standouts against tough Hill opponents, with victories shooting 77 and 81 re- spectively. Our next setback came against Newark Academy, after beating Montclair and Princeton High. We tied Newark Academy, but with three noteworthy wins: Goerke shooting 38, Coleridge 39, and Schulman shooting 43. The last three matches of the year included a win against Pingry at Baltustroll Country Club, a tie against Ward- law at home, and a loss against Lawrenceville away. We finished a most enjoyable year, placing third of thirteen teams in the state tourney. Saw. swiss if . X 3? .- Sis: 1, 5 SB - , ff C . .4 , . f, X e e, X, S i Q S ft . With a record number of scheduled games 1141, an historic lack of seasoned varsity players 141, and some of the most promising seniors not coming out for the team 121, cold realism sug- gested that a long season was in store for the 1974 lacrosse team. Long it was, but good and long! Doughboy Number 1, Captain jeff Mohr, led a band of lightly-regarded upstarts to the best won-lost record in Peddie history. In a season of miracles, the string of unlikely events began when first Coach Peter Boggs invited the team to soak up some lacrosse, Washington College style, and then coach lim Grube, Peddie '65, opened doors for a stay at Delaware. Thanks to these fine young men 26 Peddie lacrossers had a six day adventure that included a 6-6 scrimmage with prestigeous lohn Carroll and a surprise two- game appearance in the Westchester Tourna- ment. Sound goal-tending was contributed by both lim Bamberger and Shawn Steele. Chuck Hector, Rog Bunting, and Len Sadowsky led a parade of vastly-improved players, who each needed all the more when David Fritz, our other '75 captain, was lost for the season. A Spirited fivesome of first and sec- ond year lacrossers completed the small squad. For the most part, the narrow margins of play a year ago lived on. One or two goals decided 9 of the 14 games, affording underclassmen valuable clutch experience while robbing less experienced seniors of playing time. 'Come- from-behind wins were recorded over Summit, Livingston, Maplewood 'Cover- timel, and Hanover Park-who led 5-3 with less than four minutes left in the game-in another miracle. Unfortunately, the miracle mart was closed in the sudden-death loss to Fair Lawn and thegfourth-quarter rout by Lawrenceville, a real departure from the last five years, abetted by Thom Hall's virus infection. While leaving behind a healthy legacy for '75, the class of 1974 enjoyed Ped- die's most successful lacrosse season ever.lLThe. Old Gold and'Bli1e wishes to commend Captain Mohr for his record-setting contributions to Peddie lacrosse over the past five years. Walk inside and smell the sawdust, feel the electric air around you, the frigid breath of young actors in unison, tense, expectant, anticipating their time. Touch the walls with your fingers and your mind, sense the pres- ence of plays gone by, the presence of those who were here and, having removed their make-up and dimmed the lights and, hav- ing closed the script for the final time, now are gone. In the si- lence you can hear their voices. Their words, their songs, their smiles, their hopes, with the love of the theatre they linger still. Painted walls yet proclaim their nearness, the essence of theatre preserved on stone and steel. Close your eyes and take time to remember, to savor the mo- ments spent in Geiger-Reeves. Think back to the Follies, the Declamation and Reeves Prize Speaking Contests, to the Spring Arts Festival and the Drama Club plays-events that took place on Geiger-Reeves' stage during the year 1973-74. In the fall, the Drama Club presented one of Broadway's great- est musical comedies, Bye Bye Birdie. The show's inherent color and gaiety, its animate score, the effervescence of the actors, these factors coupled with the countless hours of rehearsal in the Pine and lvy, jeffrey Harry Holcombe's directing expertise, Frank Towne's brilliant musical direction, and the enthusiasm and dedication of everyone involved in the production, helped make Birdie a smash success on the Peddie stage. It was indeed a per- formance not soon to be forgotten. Springtime heralded the arrival of warmer weather, baseball, and yet another triumph for the Peddie Drama Club and its tender and evocative production of Thorton Wilder's immortal classic, Our Town, an incredibly beautiful play, but also a very fragile one, a play which needs to be nurtured and understood, that needs to be portrayed from the heart, from the very depths of one's being. The Drama Club met this challenge with maturity, professionalism, and sensitivity, the result being a performance which was not only entertaining, but also enlightening and truly inspiring. lt was a memorable year for drama at Peddie, one marked with creativity and artistic achievement. lt was a year in which a group of people worked together to transcend the barriers of their own personalities and experience those of some playwright's design. It was a year in which a group of people strove to bring flat and silent words to life, to create an experience on stage that was fresh and vital and exciting, an experience that would be stimu- lating for both actor and audience. With talent, hard work, and a little help from above, they most happily succeeded. Our Cover: our cover symbolizes the expansion that will take place among the class of '74 as we leave Peddie, not only among individuals as we branch out in different directions, but also within each one of us. Our back cover, the past, represents three major things we have gained at Peddie- Knowledge, Responsibility, and Determination, our front cover represents these things which we will acquire in the future-Independence, Experience, and Wisdom. We hope that Peddie has given us the responsibility to handle our independence, the determination to seek new experiences, and the knowledge to expand into wisdom. wa BHHDBUF7 Y- K ELL ER I 4 v Q s x n 1 ' v N P x
