O ER 1 I Captained by Bob Petrino and Pete Dyal, this year's varsity soccer squad completed one of its most successful seasons. Under Coach Rand the team won six games, lost four and tied three. Balance was the key to the success of this year's squad. The offensive unit, led by center forward Steve Dittmann, wings Shaio, Thompson, Miller and insides Patamapongs and Thomas outscored their opponents total goal output by seven. Complementing the offense was a solid defense. Petrino and Dyal at fullback, Close, Sorensen, Robinson, Switlik, at halfbacks and Doug Mariboe as goalie, The defense did a particularly outstanding job in limiting oppon- ents to an average of only l.2 goals per game. The team got off on a successful note by defeating Rutgers Prep 3-O. After being nipped by Pennsbury the Falcons made amends by going on a five game streak in which they were undefeated. The highlight of the midseason play was a O-O tie with the eventual state cham- pion, Pingry. Led by the strong efforts of Dyal and Petrino the defense played one of its best games. The l967 season was culminated in a de- cisive 2-O victory over Blair, The constant offen- sive pressure coupled with the strong defensive effort proved too much for the arch-rivals from Blairstown. ,aim . - A ,sum ,W -R s-nn- VARSITY SOCCER SQUAD: BOTTOM ROW: Patamapongs, Caicedo, Thompson, Finch, Sime one. X b 5 BASKETBALL For the first time in many years, the Varsity basketball team has compiled an outstanding record. Under the direction of Mr. Alfred W. Lozier, the Falcons had a record of eleven wins and six losses. With no returning lettermen, and six new-boys, Mr. Lozier brought out every individual's potential. The starting quintet consisted of co-captain Tim Hamilton, ball- hawk and quarterback of the team. Also in the backcourt was Sophomore, Mike Parker, who averaged sixteen points per game. At the forwards were co-captain Steve Dittmann, and Junior, Joe Durisin. At center was six-nine, John Conrad, who was the most improved player on the team. There was strong depth on the team, as Sopho- more Bill Bennett and Junior Gene Speni, proved to be valuable assets. Because of a lack of familiarity among the players, the team got off to a slow start. However, their potential was revealed as they crushed Delbarton 96 to 80, and trounced Blair Bl to 42. The team unfortunately lost a few close games. This was due to a lack of experience and chronic injuries, Against top-ranked St. Benedicts the Falcons lost by only seven points. Against arch-rival Lawrenceville, the Falcons played two excellent games, but to no avail. The highlight of the season came in the Lozier-Five's last game. Coming out of a four-game slump, the Falcons played their best game of the year against B.M.l, They were aggressive and played as a team with great desire and hustle. Losing by only nine points to the State Champions, Mr. Lozier was extremely proud of his team's perfor- mance. To culminate the successful season, Sophomore Mike Parker was named to the All-State First Team, while John Conrad made the second team. Co-captains, Tim Hamilton and Steve Dittmann made honorable mention. As Mr. Lozier looks to next season, he sees another strong team. Returning will be Sophomores, Mike Parker and Bill Bennett, and Juniors, Joe Durisin, Gene Speni, Earl Shepherd, Jon Vegosen, and Kevin Braun. IR JUNIOR VARSITY EIGHTH-NINTH GRADE SWIMMING At the beginning of this year's season the swimming team's chances of improv- ing on last year's 7 win - 8 loss record, seemed small indeed. Three ot last year's lettermen had graduated, and there were no new prospects in sight. As the season progressed, however, the team became sur- prisingly stronger with each meet. The swimming team's final record this year was IO wins and 4 losses with two meets cancelled. The team's only losses were to Lawrenceville, Newark Academy, Pingry, and a hard-fought 49-45 defeat to Penn Freshmen. Although Bob Wilson, Captain John Findeisen, and Bob Bilane were the team's top three scorers, scoring a total of over 90 points each, the team's main strength was in its depth. The team's second men were consistently getting seconds and thirds in their events, and many meets were won on these points alone. Newcomer Jim Hendrickson took many first places, and Dan Brown, Charlie Huddleston and former J. V. members Lou Tucker, J. McMaster and R. McMaster provided excellent depth. Captain Findeisen holds the school record i59.2l in the l00 yard fly, and swam on the record-breaking 400 yard free style relay team. Bob Wilson, a junior who anchored the same relay holds severrother swimming records: the school 200 yard individual medley l2:O9.8J, and both school and pool records in three free style events: the l00 yard C49.6l, the 200 yard ll :53.3l, and the 400 yard C4:l2.ll. More than the usual amount of credit goes to the coach of the Peddie School swimming team, Mr. Robert Ballou. ln just two years he has brought the team from a losing record to a solid winning one. Even now there are indications that Peddie is starting to draw some excellent swim- mers, and the swimming team will be the team to watch in the coming years. .acc A' -E Coached by Mr. Jones, the l966-67 Varsity Wres- tling team started on a slow note, but by the end of the season had become a team to be reckoned with. Mr, Jones should be commended for doing a fine coaching job. Faced with only one returning lettering, Larry Blackhurst, and three seniors, Metz, Livoti, and Olsen, Coach Jones was forced to field a young and inexperienced team. After a tough first-half season in which the Falcons faced the best wrestling teams in the state, the mat- men regrouped their forces and prepared for the state meet by winning their last three meets in a row. Larry Blackhurst and Vince Grasso compiled outstanding season records with Blackhurst going undefeated. Vince Grasso led Peddie to a sixth place finish in the state meet. Grosso placed second, while Metz, Hart, Wulster and Marcellus finished forth. By diligent practice and fine coaching the grapplers developed into a fine team. With eight returning let- termen, Coach Jones should have little trouble in fielding a fine wrestling squad next year. NEWS ls Ambitious The Peddie News of i967 will probably be remembered as a rather informal and ambitious paper that was always trying to escape the realm of standard journa- lism. Jim Sarnoff's extraordin- ary pen brought the senior sketch and the feature page to new heights. The cartoons and dangerously informal senior pictures of J. F. Decker were other favorites. Tony Marcson achieved fame with his use of banner heads as did Skip Kay's fourth page column, Crooks from the Frog. Bill Watterson took the du- ties of the second page and did an adequate job. Tony Marcsan, in his first year on the Peddie News staff, produced a sports page of constantly high caliber, and Skip Kay did a fine job handling the fourth page. Scott Castor and Charlie Shaw worked long hours as the paper's copy editors. Jim Steinbeg proved invaluable as a jack-of-all-trades edi- tor, helping out wherever needed, throughout the year. This year's faculty ad- visors, Messrs, Roberts, Ker- rick, and Dyer, spent many hours helping to shape the paper into its final form before casting it to its severest critics, the student body. Stanley Weindorf was in- valuable as the typing edi- tor, often typing almost the entire paper himself. One of the brightest spots of this year's paper proved to be the often amusing and al- ways provoking cartoons drawn by Fred Decker. Fred also headed up the photo- graphy staff, alo'ng with Lenny Bayer. This year's staff was an extremely efficient o n e which produced a paper of high quality. Editors Protest Rules This year's News editor- ials, covering all aspects of Peddie life, often aroused discussion on campus. Editor is Chief S. P. Brown, in separate articles, attacked the mounting pressure on Juniors and Seniors, and called for a new wave of school spirit. ln an editorial praising this year's new Credit ln- centive System, Larry Walk pointed out its many favor- able points. Tony Marcson outlined his satisfaction and admiration for the Peddie student body by editorializ- ing on the honorable way dances are conducted. ln addition Marcson made a plea for the abolition of un- necessary school rules. Thirty-nine questions, covering social, political, and academic as- pects of their lives at Ped- die, were asked to the stu- dents. The results were often surprising, in others, naive or laughable. According to the poll, 3296 wanted Romney for President in l968. Johnson gat 94k of the votes, placing him fifth out of six possible candi- dates. More than a majority of the students wanted an in- creased war effort in Viet- nam. ln addition, 804k said they expected to further their education after college. Eighty-three per cent favor- ed bringing a girl to a desert island instead of the three other possible choices given. For those who are interest- ed, 8-lik of the Peddie stu- dents wear jockey shorts, while .SWJ where no shorts at all. Over 504k plan to marry sometime between the ages of 2l-25. Coaches Ed Paul and Eddie McColl, Sr., field- ed a well balanced team that produced con- sistently sharp pitching and timely hitting, with occasionally the long ball for good meas- ure. The defense was tight, especially in mid- season when in three consecutive games our opponents managed to score a total of one run, two of the contests being successive l-O victories over Ridgewood and Pennington. Captain Bob Petrino, who bore the brunt of the pitching load, had a 5-3 record, while Joe Durisin and Harry George were 4-O and l-O respectively. Vander Veer and Pastore were the most consistent hitters, the former also clouting three home-runs. On Parents Day, against a powerful Ridge- wood team, Durisin spun a four-hit shut-out, Joe was ahead of every batter, walked none and struck out eight. Cam Vander Veer's lead-off homer in the second inning turned out to be the only run. ln the following game, against Pennington, his double scoring Pas- tore duplicated the feat. For the third year in succession Peddie downed Lawrenceville in a loosely played game I4-7, a seven-run second inning to overcome ci three-run deficit, along with solid hitting, was the highlight of this victory. A bases-loaded double by Captain-elect Kugler capped a four-run inning to win this one. The first game of the season, a lO-O rout of Poly Prep, was an auspicious event. This year's varsity lacrosse team complet- ed the most successful season in Peddie's his- tory. ln the school's first winning season, Coach von Schwerdtner led his squad to a 9-4 record. The team, built around Captain Bob Fine, boasted few lettermen, but they, aided by a surprisingly strong group of underclassmen, welded themselves into a very effective unit. Captain Fine, who led the team with a new Peddie scoring record of 27 goals and ll as- sists, frequently controlled the ball and the game - much to the advantage of the Ped- die squad. Jim Scrivani's great defensive play during the entire season earned him a first team All-State berth, while Fine and junior Kelly Wallace made the second All-State team. Seniors Hass Winters, Bob Cooper, Pete Close, and Gus Devine were other first- string players who were instrumental in the squad's success. Another Peddie first was the 8-4 win over Pingry, while the highlight of the season came in the two wins over Hun, whose all-stater, Tom Petty, was held scoreless by Scrivani and goalie Levin in the second game. Of the many people who helped the team to its fine record, especial praise is due Coach William Beale RECORD Fairlawn .. .. 6 Peddie ..... Peddie . . . . . 7 Princeton H.S. Under the critical looks of Coach Bullet Lawson and his faithful stop-watch, the Track team started its season with a bang and com- piled a 6-4 over-all record. Competing for the first time together, the team soundly defeated Hightown in a prac- tice meet with a 78-48 score. Peddie, now confident of its ability, began its regular season by defeating Pennington and Admiral Farragut by scores of 95-3l and 65-57. Further into the season, Peddie met with the perennially strong St. Benedict's team and defeated them by a close score of 64-62. The entire meet hinged on the broad jumping ef- forts of Earl Duke Shepherd and Hugh Rob- inson, who placed first and third respectively. Finally the day arrived when the undefeated Peddie team met with arch-rival Hill and suf- fered its first defeat. Steve Hyman, Hank Newton and Fred Stem were the only winners against one of Hill's strongest teams. Peddie returned, with its next meet, how- ever, defeating B.M.l. by a score of 7l-55. ln this meet, Peddie was forced to rely on its depth because B.M.l. won all but four firsts. On Parents Day, Peddie met with a sur- prising Ridgewood team and endured their sec- ond defeat by the close score of 60-57. Fol- lowing Ridgewood, Peddie was surprised again by a strong Pingry team and suffered still another defeat by a score of 7l-56. Still stun- ned by the loss to Pingry, Peddie ventured into Lawrenceville and sustained their final defeat of the season by an all-around Lawrenceville squad by a score of 85-4l. The weak Peddie team came out of its slump in the meet with arch-rival Blair, de- feating them by the score of 80-46. Finishing up their dual meet season, Peddie trounced the Poly Prep team by a 94-32 score, revenging the previous year's meet. Over the Senior Prom weekend Peddie took second place at the George School Invitational with only a part of the team present. The top field-performers were Hank Newton and Fred Stem. ln the running events Junior Jim Sporn was second in the 880 Yard run, while Jerry 4 sl. Hart scored a second in the mile. ln the Sprints Steve Smiles scored a fourth. The hur- dle relay team placed second. Concluding their season, Peddie took a sixth place in the state meet. The top per- formers were Jim Sporn, second in the 880, and Fred Stem, second in the pole vault. Sophomore Jerry Hart scored a third in the mile run. Charlie Shaw took a fifth in the high hurdles while in the weight events, Newton was awarded fifth in the shot and fifth in the discus. John Kozlowski took a third in the discus. sf 5, g? L X. Combined under Coach John Polhemus were outstanding singles players and evident strength in the two doubles teams. Surpass- ing last year's excellent season, the netmen showed the potential that will give Peddie a reputation as a power in tennis within the near future. Completing a superb season, newboy Cap- tain Gene Speni, playing the number one position, compiled an individual record of l2-l in singles competition. Gene, a Junior, ranked fourth in the East by the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association, met and defeated some of the foremost players in New Jersey. Jon Vegosen, also a Junior, played second after improving markedly over the summer, His in- tense desire to win proved fruitful for him as well as the team. Four-year letter man Dave Bildner, besides acting as the team's come- dian, played superb tennis at third singles with a record of ll-2. Greg Djanikian, after coming out later in the season, played the fourth spot, while Stu Bishop and Dave Tan- ner completed the singles positions at five and six. Bob Bishop compiled the best overall dou- bles record, as he lost only two matches at second doubles, playing either with Djanikian or Bildner. Out of a season comprised predominantly of victories, there were two highlights. The first was a 5-4 win over New Jersey High School Champions Ridgewood, who had pre- viously not lost in twenty-two meets and who had never been defeated by Peddie. The sec- ond was in becoming the George School Invi- tational Champions by defeating six other teams, two of which the netmen lost to in dual meets. Gene Speni and Dave Buildner took firsts in their respective positions, while Jon Vegosen and Greg Djanikian place sec- ond in theirs. This gave Peddie a one-point margin of victory over second-place Blair. Much credit must go to Mr. Polhemus who fostered a close relationship with every indi- vidual player. Without his guidance the sea- son could not have been a successful one. One of the team's losses was a heart-breaking 4-3 setback at the hands of a strong Lawrenceville team. Despite the team's fine record, Coach Craig Kerrick was not blessed with a problem-free year. Junior captain, James Dwulet, was plagued by an early season slump, and returning senior let- ter winner, James Wedge Thompson, was out for all but a few matches because of an injured knee. Sophomore Bruce Schwerin was perhaps the most consistent player, often turning in sub-par scores. His 32 on Peddie's front nine tied a course record.
