Uur memories ofdays spenton jersey's southward plain are many - some include fellow students now gone: Alan Blankfield, Charlie Carlton, Jim Cleary, Frank Cronin - but most are of those who have made the Senior Class stand out in the last four years. We well remember those who gained recognition of our class's worth in the battle with the books, we recall those who have played for Peddie's teams, and we remember the leaders of Peddie's publications and activi- ties. Back in the first few days after our birth, our class began to show off its brain power. We had more than our share of honor students - Steve Clark, Charlie Cohan, Mike Flicker, and Clyde Holt. As our numbers increased, so too did the number in our class receiving honors. Cy Todd appeared on the scene to tell us about rocketry, and Steve Clark stuck around telling us about everything. Last year jack Herrity pulled his in- famous 99 in Spanish, and last year too, we first ran into the College Boards. The Boards proved what everyone had suspected for four years - our class is one of the best that ever passed through Peddie. We had already proved that we have some of the best athletes in the annals of our school. In Freshman year Lee Vulgaris and Phil Pullen starred on the third form football team while making ready for their varsity careers. jim Hicks, Dave Ogden, and Bill 'Rose pushed the Frosh- Soph soccer team to an undefeated season. Mike Flicker represented our class in wrestling, winning a state championship. In the spring, Connie Decker drove the golf team on to one of its ex- cellent seasons. In sophomore year, we sent four men up to varsity soccer: Hicks, Ogden, Rose, and Larry Robinson. Lance Hopkins fremember him?J played varsity football. Brant Duffy dove well, Tim Keller joined Mike on the wrestling team, and Decker showed up again for golf. Last year we practically took over varsity football, sending in A1 Carpenter, Phil Pullen, Lee Vul- garis, and Dave Lawless, who were assisted by Flicker, U1Mantia and Waddell. Tony Hicks and joe Fell ran cross country. Tony and Lee played varsity basketball, while Brant kept the board bouncing. jack Herrity and john Clough comple- mented the wrestling team, and Mike Horowitz manifested his power in the weight lifting club. Tony Hicks joined Connie on the links, while Bernie Campbell threw some hot ones on the diamond. This year, we carried our seniority into all the sports. Sports occupied our afternoons, but activities took up our spare time. Steve Clark reported for the Peddie News during his Freshman and Sopho- more years, but then moved to a more noble publi- Cation, the Old Gold and Blue. Mike Horowitz was quick to fill Steve's place with the help of Max Rubin. This year, Steve worked to produce the Old Gold and Blue, as editor, and Mike spent some time editing the News, which was published sporadically. Last year saw the birth of the Ampbignl which was well supported for two years by our class. In all the occupations and activities at Peddie, our class have been the leaders. Some of us think we have done something for Peddie, others of us think we have done something to Peddie, but we have one thing in commong we have all been mem- bers ofthe Class of '58, Peddie. As one might expect from our great size, we are a class of much and varied talent, but the fact one might not realize is that our talent is large percentage-wise also. Leading our class in the academic aspects of school life are Kraemer Luks, Nelson Levy, and Carl Anderson, three very able and versatile scholars. These three are not the only high rank- ing intellects, but they are at the top of the list. Our class is represented well on all athletic fields. Eight of the starting football eleven were, ff . Being state champions, in addition to com- piling an ll and 1 record, the soccer team had a great season. For the first time in a long while, the team bea. both Blair and Lawrenceville in the same season. Strengthened by the return of eight out of eleven starters, Mr. Rand's booters quickly ran off a nine game winning streak. The victories were over Long Branch, Pennington, Hun School, Princeton High, Pingry, Hamilton High, Trenton Catholic, Pennington, and Law- renceville. In the Lawrenceville game played at Peddie, Dave Ogden and jerry de la Macorra each scored. This defeat of Lawrenceville meant that a victory or tie with Blair would give Peddie the state championship. Ten days later Blair was defeated 2-1 as Ogden scored both goals on penalty kicks. The starting team consisted of Peter Westine, Larry Robinson, and William Rose, fullbacksg Chris Duff, Bill Faylor, and Bert Rockafellow, halfbacksg jimmy Hicks, and john Barlow, wings, jerry de la Macorra and Luis Uribe, inside for- wards, and Dave Ogden, center and captain. Ogden provided most of the scoring with eighteen goals lbreaking the former record held by Arnie Turpj. ln the Pennington game Dave booted in four. Season totals were Uribe 5, Barlow 3, de la Macorra 3, Hicks 3, Faylor 3, Siccardi 2. The only defeat of the season was at the hands of Hill School 1-0. The game was played at Hill under very windy conditions. Special credit should be given the defensive stalwarts who allowed only seven goals the whole season. Led by goalie Peter Westine they in- clude Larry Robinson, William Rose, Chris Duff, Bert Rockafellow, and Bill Faylor. Westine turned in seven shutouts for the season. At the end of the season and before the all- state elections were made, many thought that Ogden, Westine, and Robinson would be placed on the first team, however, Ogden and Robinson were on the second team, and Westine was given honorable mention. Bill Faylor was elected cap- tain ofthe team for next year. The outlook for next year is very good due to the fine j.V. performances of Manuel Celedon and Fdgar Tribaldos who tallied nine goals this year. Gary Probasco did very well as goalie. The j.V. record was 5 and 1, including two wins over Lawrenceville. 44.1 , ,QL '33 A , 3 I ,H-'V ll 3? . E 74 M 5' ' 392' 1 U 'Z ?L. :ci lf' jg ,J V' L MQ 13- ' 4' if - Q - Q K' v Q ,W- ,, A A ... Skip Goldfein bore the load of the Sports Editorshipg and the editorial tasks of page make-up, copy reading, and exchanges with other school papers were handled by jeff Norwalk, Gerry Gold, and Pete Wilson. The financial end of the deal, the Business staff was headed b 1 Y Bob Ross. Circulation on those Friday afternoons was handled by Ted Keen, through whom not only students and faculty members received the' b l . ir papers, ut a so alumni and friends of Peddie. This is the 46th year of life for the Peddie Neus, and there will assuredly be many more years of meritorious service to, and representa- tion of, the interests of the student body. f First Rau Anderson Click McManus, Luks, Yurasko, Clark, G. THE OLD GOLD AND BLUE Evolving from the Peddie yearbooks of the past but essaying progressive improvement, this book earns special distinction as being in a very real sense the product of the work of the editorial board, who, requiring little aid from the advisor, shaped the book in what they considered the best spirit of Peddie publications. Outstanding as Editors were Editor-in-Chief Steve Clark and junior Editor Kraemer Luks, who rendered the job of faculty advisor superfluous as it should be. In his second year as busi- ness manager, Bill Yurasko. excelled his previous record mark. Larry Land, busy also as art editor for another demanding Peddie publication, provided illustrations almost single handed. Bill McManus as sports editor, and Gary Richardson and Carl Ander- son as copy editors made significant contributions. Cy Todd, also a physics student, performed the unusual job of cooperating with the yearbook while at the same time functioning for The Peddie News. Many other boys deserve credit for helping with this major undertaking. It is to be hoped that those who look through this book now and in future years will appreciate these efforts and be indulgent by pardoning inevitable errors and inadequacies. kx'Qx X XxX S x N XX X 'XX Xj-Q X R N 4, N JW CN w X xi-ig IFB X 5 S NTER S X 'X ,OAK .P S ST JN X3 xx f Y ' S ,J 'venom' ' 13515 ' M N First Rout Schultz, Goldman, Vulgaris, Cambell, T. This year's varsity basketball team compiled an excellent record of eleven wins, five losses. ln his first year as varsity coach, john Bristor '46 had only two returning lettermen from last year's championship team. However, with the addition of a few new boys and the promotion of former j.V.'s, he built a powerful squad. Led by Captain Leon Vulgaris, the starting team consisted of Dick Borger, Len Shemin, Marty Goldman, and Dick Knowles. Despite a shaky start, the team settled down and finished strongly. However, with injuries to two starters, the team was eliminated in the semi-finals of the state tournament. The season had many highlights. Among them were: a 72-66 overtime victory over Horace Mann and excitingly close victories over Pingry, Hill, and Stevens Frosh. The highlight of the season was a Comeback victory over Bordentown Military. Trailing 39-27 at halftime, the team, with Dick Borger hitting for 24 points, fought back and de- feated the Soldiers 72-61. The combination of Vulgaris's spirit and fine leadership, Borger's high scoring, and Knowles's constant drive resulted in the fine year. Credit should also be given to Bob Schultz, Sem Dieterich, Bemie Campbell, Paul Kroner, and Tom Shuman for their fine play during the season. bf.. f '55 ix: 'MMM 1 3 ' :JJ id LV 323045, First Huw: Lanahan, Keller, Cauntt, Poten. Peddie's wrestling team lived up to expecta- tions in posting a 10 and 1 record, the best in its history. The lone loss, a real thriller of Z3 to 17, was suffered at the hands of Haverford. Some of the victories over very able competition included Poly Prep Q27-133, St. Andrews C33-135, George School f20-141, Lawrenceville C33-115, Blair Q50-151 and St. Benedicts Q23-129. Ed Lanahan, who posted a 9-1-1 season record, started off the matches in the 105 lbs. class. Tim Keller and Barry Reisman followed with fine jobs. Then came the big men : Bill Poten who was undefeated in 128 lb. class, former state championjack llerrity. in 133 lb. class, and captain and state champion, Mike flicker, who was undefeated and untied in the 138 lb. class. These were followed by john Nielson, Lloyd Reynolds, state champion Al Slader and jack Silsby. jack Clough completed the lineup as heavyweight. Although the state meet held at Pingry did not yield the expected championship, the team still took a very respectable second. Much credit should be given to Coach Robert l.. The 200 yard freestyle relay of Mike Martin, Dave Henshaw, jim Love and Bob Reddell set a new school record with a 138.6 clocking. ln the Rut- gers Frosh meet the 200 yard medley relay of Bob Reddell, jeff Lane, Art Siccardi and Mike Martin bettered the old school record of 2:01 with a l:'53.0. The mermen were especially strong in the freestyle events where jerry de la Maccora, Bob Reddell and Dave Henshaw set the pace in the 50 and 100 yard events. Art Siccardi and Ronnie Friedman led in the 100 yard butterfly and 150 yard individual medley. jeff Lane and Glen Wever swam the 100 yard orthodox breaststroke. In the backstroke jim Love and Dave Roth were the most prominent swimmers. Coach Zeitler was pleased with the victories over Trenton High and Blair. Both meets were decided in the last relay. Besides having practice hampered by numerous snow falls, the team had its first six meets canceled because of inclement weather. As a result, the record compiled was only 3-3. In the state meet, however, Peddie placed fourth in total points - an impressive accomplishment. Bill Yurasko, as predicted in the Old Gold and Blue last year, did well during the entire season. He placed third in the high hurdles in the state meet, fifth in the lows. At the same time, out- standing performances were turned in by Gerry Merklinger and Al Yodakis who took first and second respectively in the state meet shot put. They too did well throughout the year. In the sprints, Deckle McLean, Tommy King, Gerry Merklinger, and Fletcher Bedell consistent- ly turned in winning times as well as coming up with an excellent relay. The longer distances had joe Fell, Dean Edell, a fast rising junior, Dan Mozer, and Bruce Brotzman. An outstanding miler, Fran Conlon, a sophomore, also showed his heel to the opposition. He should go far in the next two years. Coach Robert Lawson, piloting a good team this year, has great potential for next year with depth in almost all events. vm Sugsmar...
