X Q 7950 CLD GQLD AN BLUE Mr. Harmon in a typical pose, giving sound advice to Peddie boys. Presenting the Head of the School Cup on Prize Day I il. Nair MR. RALPH E. HARMON This year's Old Gold and Blue is dedicated to a person who is considered by the senior class to be not only the man most deserving of recognition in our yearbook but also a man whose cheerful spirit and quiet learning typify the goal that we seek. Mr. Harmon joined the faculty as a master in 1907 and rose to the position of Assistant Headmaster. Then, in 1949, the Board of Corporators voted Mr. Harmon a sabbatical leave before his coming retirement in lune. 1950. Through all his years at Peddie, he has worked unceasingly and unsel- fishly for the students. In dedicating this yearbook to him, we, the Senior Class, realize that we speak for the hundreds of Peddie men who remember the warm smile, the sincere friendliness of this fine Christian gentleman. alt ll' III 4 4 4-me 14 ,Q V! We had been prepared for a big year when, we returned to Peddie in Sep- tember, 1949, and, indeed, we had a hard year. We were seniors. We were in our educational prime, enjoying prep school life and working steadily toward college. We had our light moments: we had our serious moments. And as the year flew on these moments became memories which we will never forget. We saw the beginning of a new era in expansion at Peddie. We watched student government take a step forward towards increased senior responsibil- ity. We saw the new gymnasium, once a confusing mass of steel qirders, become a living part of Peddie. We saw the chapel grow from a dream io a concrete reminder of the Christian principles Peddie was built to teach. Long after we have ventured forth into a world of uncertainitv of doubt. we will remember and cherish our alma mater E WERE THE SENICRS . We had com- pleted enough of our preprschool education to think of graduation and of college even though we had not come to our final year. It was during this, the junior year, that we got the feeling of being a class, and a good one. The class of '51 has more than held its own in scholastic and extra-curricular activities. Iuniors played vital roles in all varsitv sports and compiled an enviable record on iunior varsity squads. Our class has done well scholastically as the many jun- iors' names on the Honor List will prove. Every school function received our support and cooperation. 56 - E752-EEEZTE H - iQ 1 I 1 ?5?aEg: .-T:-.GTI Za? r.':':.1 : 6 v -.' 'I 1, .ji P xi .9 me g . In anticipation of becoming seniors in 1952, we have taken an active part in student government, athletics, and clubs. Peddie has become a concrete part of our lives, as we have learned her traditions, her songs, and her code. A large group ol our class showed prom- ise in varsity and junior varsity ath- letic teams, and scholastic honors were earned by many of our number. Under the guidance of Mr. Stephen R. At the end of this, our first year in the upper school, we of the class of 1953 realized that we had come a long wav. As the first few days of school flew by, and we became bet- ter aquainted with Peddie, we knew that we were finding our place at school. With three more years of Peddie life remaining, the freshman class has already begun to take an active part in all phases of school life. We can boast of notable achieve ements in scholarship and extra-curricular activities, including athletics and clubs. lt as been a noteworthy year for us, and next year we have every inten- tion of maintaining the record that we have thus iar attained. Assistant coaches were Mr. Theodore Wright, Mr. Lucian Waddell, and Mr. Frank Thropp. The first game was played against a strong Episcopal eleven, and the Mickeymen walked off the field the losers by a 13-7 count. The team won its first game of the season from Penn Charter by the decisive score of 19-7. Next in line for a defeat by the Shumanites was Poly Prep, going down 20-7. After that encounter our varsity lost its four remaining games of the season. Rutgers Prep came out on top, 7-0 in a close contest. Disaster struck in the next game when the Gold and Blue was smothered by Lawrenceville 41-7. The Hill contest. played at Pottstown, was captured by Hill 39-20, but only after a tremendous struggle. Although at several points throughout the game it seemed that the Shumanites were going to win the struggle with Blair, our Blairstown opponents finally left the field the victors in our last game of the season, 25-13. Mighty Graham turned in an excellent performance at the end position, and Vince Marino at the other end also performed in a manner deserving praise. Backfield men Doug Melville and lim Castle kept the Peddie offensive in high gear, as Melville's deft ball handling and Castle's expert plunging accounted for much yardage. The team, led by Captain Seth Bartner, started the season with few returning vet- erans, but hopes were high lor a good year. The sprinters looked good, with Bob O'Nei1l, Hugh Burns, and Ace Barclay running the sixty, and Barclay and Burns the quarter. Bartner and Tom Sprague were running the hurdles, while Dick Mount was show- .-J ing skill at the shot put. As a result oi the graduation of last year's distance runners, there was some weak- ness in the half-mile and mile events: but Bob lohnson, Dick Kotler, and Benny Grieco were showing promise in the eight-eighty, and Larry Codding, Ioe Butcher, and Stu Greisen in the mile. Relay runners were Bartner, Iohnson, Sprague, Burns, and Barclay. The relay 'team took a fifth at the Inquirer Relays in Philadelphia and gave promise of a good season. WI TER TRACK-- +C 65 'lf Q-fm in This year's Old Gold and Blue quintet has exemplified spirit and teamwork. Ably directed by Coach lack Edgar and spearheaded by three returning lettermen, the Peddie cagers constituted one of the most powerful aggregations seen on our court for several seasons. Led by Captain Don Smalley, who played forward, the starting five included two other veterans, Doug Melville playing guard, and Bob Iohnson at center. The newcomers on the squad were Bill Hunter. guard, and Red Reichert, forward. This fortunate blending of old and new produced a combina- tion that made itself felt around prep school basketball circles. Bench power was also all important to the total success of the team, with Horace Brown and Ev Baldwin filling in the gaps that appeared from time to time. It was these boys who provided the extra punch needed occasionally to pull a close one out of the fire, as anyone who saw Brown sink that basket against Admiral Farragut will agree. Sprout's swimming team has seen in many years. The thirteen meet schedule included the best secondary school and college freshman swimming teams in this and surrounding states. A vigorous spirit and strong determination to win went with the Peddie aquamen in every meet they entered, even though the lack of proper facilities made the team an underdog in most of its competition. Captain John Burleigh led the freestylers as he very often took first place in both the 50 and 100 yard events. But Matsu, Mert Lock- hart, Whitey Lloyd, and Fred Maguire contributed their talents to the 50 yard dashes, while Dan Glick stayed top man in the 100 yard breaststroke. Tim Tobin and Bill Merizon turned in commendable times in the 100 yard backstroke, and Whitey Lloyd stroked to beautiful victories in the grueling 200 yard freestyle grind. Iohn Wettach, Ed Soderlund. and Norman Veasey were the other freestylers. Thanks to Fred Maguire, the 150 yard individual medley was usually a sure-fire first for Peddie. A high moment of the school year came on Nov- ember 12 When we witnessed the laying of the corner- stone for the Mills Gymnasium. Since early September the sidewalk engineers among us had supervised the excavation, the building of the foundation, and the erection of the first steel girders. From November on ear the mnasium of our dreams took throughout the y gy final shape, with its beautiful pool, its 100 by 85 foot gym floor, its large wrestling room, and its spacious locker rooms. Thus as we come to the end of the year we take pride in the knowledge that our school has one of the finest athletic plants in the East. Ili til H1 l 1 U UK.-I. The 1950 Old Gold and Blue nine, again mentored by Coach Clinton I. Sprout and Assistant Coaches Evans Hicks and H. Martin Iones, was an excellent combination of re- turning talent and new faces blended to produce one of the strongest ball clubs to be seen on the varsity diamond for the last few years. The infield with one exception was composed of first year men. lim Castle played first base: hurtling Red Reichert did remarkably well at second: Bill Hunter patrolled the gap be- tween second and third: and lohn Iahos and Dick Baxter split the third base assignment. In the outfield, however, returning lettermen were plentiful. Covering left field was a veteran ot four years of varsity competition, reliable Pete Forman. Doug Melville held down center field, and Tom Forman and Frank De Luca shared right field. The mainstay of the mound corps was Tom Forman. He received capable support, however, from hurlers Frank De Luca, Charlie McCrea, and Bob Murphy. From a few plans, a few pieces of copy, and a few photographs in October, this book grew. We hope you will consider it, as we do, an outline of your own personal steps and those of your friends along the paths of Peddie in the year 1949-50. The fact that our plans required heavy financing could have stopped us cold. However, the tireless work of Business Man- ager Iohn Straton and the wonderful Co- operation of the students were successful in amassing enough advertisements to allow an extension of several pages beyond those originally contracted. ln order for the yearbook to be a cul- mination of as rnany good ideas as possible, four boys teamed up to become the editor -Frank De Luca, Robert Gardiner, Daniel Glick, and Richard Walken. It is our sincere hope that the innovations in the 1950 Old Gold and Blue will be a source of inspiration for all Peddie yearbooks of the future. This edition of the school annual re- quired much good photography. Michel Con- heim and Adrian Frvlink, photography edi- tors, and Iere Marsh spent many tedious hours behind lens and enlarger, producing the photographs which recall so well the Peddie spirit. Paul Frahm's cartoons have also added much to the effectiveness of the book. There is one man, however, who de- serves a wealth of praise, for the tremendous responsibility of the annual falls year upon year on his shoulders. lf this yearbook is anything of the success that we hope it will be, it will be largely due to the tedious labor of Mr. George A. Carver, faculty ad- viser. Our thanks go also to Mr. William H. French, associate adviser. Left to right, lst row: Mr, Carver, Walken, De Luca, Gardiner, I. Thanks to the great volume of advertis- ing which he secured, the paper's books managed to balance despite the cut in the allotment given it by the school. The orchestra has been enlarged and has attained a new level of excellence. Performing on several occasions throughout the year, its major appearance was at the May Musicale along with the Glee Club and a guest artist. The concert this year had special significance, being conducted as a benefit performance to raise funds for a memorial in our new chapel to Mr. Roy Iudson Waite. Mr. Waite, prior to his untimely death in 1944, was for twenty-eight years a master in Peddie, and for many years the faculty manager of the spring musicales. In the fall the marching band was organized and added much to the spirit and pleasure of the football games. After the football season the band was reorganized and enlarged as a concert band. This organization presented a concert for the school and guests in the gym- nasium on November 20. Following that occasion the band provided further opportunity for group playing and looked toward its annual appearance on Prize Day. In addition to the concert orchestra and the bands Peddie boasts a very popular musical organization in the Golden Blues. This group again was under the very able direction of Mr. Philip M. Hood. Several newcomers joined the veterans Ralph Stiles. Bob Waples, Carter Straton, and Dick Hood in making every informal dance a melodious success. A feature of many of the dances was an informal jam session with Ralph Stiles on the saxaphone, Carter Straton on the bass, and Bob Gardiner at the piano. 99 . 8-,yas .Z O .VI , it 'Vw rsh tw If It GOLDEN BLUES Left to right, lst row: Hood, R Frahm, Beck, R. A. is the oldest prepa- ratory school organization of its kind in the country. The enthusi- astic spirit backing the Y was demonstrated by the students of 1948-1949 when over 52,500 was collected for the Y drive. This year's leaders were looking for the same kind of support for the 1950 drive which was in prospect when the yearbook went to press. A major feature on the year's program was the Buck Hills Falls Conference in Ianuary attended by several representatives of our group. The organization was directed this year by Mr. Donald Mar- shall and an executive board composed of Frank De Luca. lim McCrossen, Norman Veas- ey, Iohn lahos, John Straton, Nick Coates, and Bob Laegeler. Walter Reeves, director of public speak- ing, has devised a plan where- by the sponsorship of the con- test will pass on to the prize winners of former years. Mr. Reeves hopes eventually to build up a permanent endow- ment fund to guarantee the per- petuation of the contest. Each contestant prepares an original speech, and the final judging is based equally on composition and delivery. The finalists for the 1950 contest, an- nounced just before the Old Gold and Blue went to press, were lames W. McCrossen, Nor- man B. Harrison, Iohn E. Aus- tin, Lawrence A. Greene, Mel- vin Adlerman, and William Hardesty. The contest was scheduled to take place in the Ayer Memorial Chapel on March 4. organized on a preliminary basis. A definite decision had not been made as to the 1950 play, and of course no cast se- lected. The club was again un- der the direction of Mr. P. D. L. Way, and everyone who saw the very splendid 1949 produc- tion of Iulius Caesar was looking forward in keen antici- pation to the 1950 presentation. Lett to right, lst row: G.
