OFFICFRS 1-J CONTINUING the record started four years ago, the Senior Class one of the largest in recent years, has been working especially hard to gain recognition over the previous gradu ating classes. The present overcrowd ing of colleges and the stiff competi tion for entrance have placed academic work foremost in the life of a senior The granting of late lights, inaugu rated last year, has been a great help to all seniors. A good percentage of the boys in the school who received hrst or second honors were seniors. Among these were Rogers Elliot, Jr., Francis V. Bielski, james Vose, Jack A. Monk- man, William H. Cheney, Martin C. Battestin, Thomas L. Masters, Fred S. Anderson, Robert L. Porter, and A1- bert Reinfeld. CLASS Many members of the class played on the various varsity teams Some of the more outstanding athletes have been Townsend W Oliver Nicholas M Schloeder William T Hostetter Charles A Geran and james W Brown Keeping up its past record the class supported almost all of the schools extracurricular organizations The class officers were as follows Martin C Battestin president Townsend W Oliver vice president and N Reeves Little secretary treasurer Mr Tim mons has been the class adviser By its excellent record the class of 1948 can consider itself vvell prepared for college and later life. 1 ABDUL 1-IADI JOHN ALDEN H ad, Eagle A ghanzftan Enfefed Paddle 1942 Soccer 43 44 Squash 44 45 Camera Club 43 44 Creatne Wrxttnb Club 46 47 Roommale and Room Frank Semor Cole man 12 Bom August 19 1929 I-larxard FRED S ANDERSON Fred Aillllfj Pezzrzqlzazzza Emerald Peddle 1946 Cross Country 46 Basketball 46 47 Squash 48 Band 46 Orthcstra 47 48 Ola' Gollum! Plunkett, Philip aa- AS the members of this year's jun ior Class move closer to their senior year, more emphasis has been placed on academic work in prepara tion for college. Many of the juniors have attained high scholastic ratings and several names have been on the honor roll consistently. Among the high-ranking students in the Class of '49 are Alan Brockman Lincoln Ekstrom, Ulises Cwiberga, Robert W Jones, and Robert V. LaTorre In the held of athletics many jun- iors have made a very commendable record for their class, participating in all varsity and jayvee sports. Some of the most outstanding junior athletes were Ted C Baer ames Metzler Philip Palamountain Roy A Lind berg and Edward A Masland The members of the class also continued their record by participating in the various school organizations such as The Peddze Aeur the Press Club musical organizations and the Radio and Rifle Clubs The ofticers of the Class of 49 were ohn Plunket president john Petty vice-president and Philip Palamoun tain secretary-treasurer. Mr. Everett Sugarbaker has acted in the capacity of adviser to the unior Class. 550151 COMPOSED of approximately forty students and led by President john Dufford, the class of 1950 ended this year with admirable accomplishments and great hopes for the future. Its preparation for the next two years was exemplary of the best Peddie spirit. Many sophomores distinguished themselves in the field of athletics, varsity letters being attained in soc- cer, basketball, swimming, wrestling, and baseball. The Freshman-Sopho- more basketball team lost only one game of its scheduled twelve. Douglas Melville, Frank De Luca, and John jahos did a fine job in j.V. foot- ballg Tim Tobin and John Burleigh OFFICERS Mr. Reeves. displayed their aquatic abilities with considerable success, while Lewis D'Ippolito upheld the Sophomore Class in the field of wrestling. Charlie Reed consistently led the class scholastically and ranked second in the school during the winter term. Sophomores were prominent on the re- porting staffs of The Peddie Newr, The Old Gold and Blue, and the Press Club. Members of the Class of 1950 were very active in the Science, Stamp, and Gun Clubs. It is apparent that the Sophomore Class through its vigorous support of all phases of school life is preparing for a great Peddie of the future. THE CLASS UF Lrfl fo figbi: Lewis H. THE Freshman Class during the past year has made a notable rec- ord with many of its members excel- ling in scholarship, extracurricular ac- tivities, and athletics. Having been formed around a nucleus of fourteen lower school graduates, the Freshman Class quickly established itself as an important factor in Peddie life. Many clubs and organizations were actively supported by the freshmen. The Science Club, the Rifle Club, and the Camera Club were among those consistently attended by freshmen. Several freshmen established notable records for themselves scholastically. Among the top-ranking members were David B. Kunstler, Henry W. Huff- nagle, Thomas C. Wallace, Donald H. Werner, Charles A. Eisenfelder, and Peter Ayers. Although starting the academic year with an unsuccessful Freshman-Sopho- more football team, the Freshman Class offers some promising athletes who may excel in varsity sports in a few years. Among those who took the keenest interest in sports were Donald W. Hornbeck, Charles A. Eisenfelder, Jack L. Bradley, Philipp Evans, Robert Cowan, Robert C. Laegeler, and Don- ald H. Werner. The faculty adviser for the Class of 1951 is Mr. Mariboe. The class offi- cers for the past year, elected from the graduating class of the Lower School, were as follows: Peter A. Baker, pres- identg Arthur Chang, vice-president, and Henry W. Huffnagle, secretary- fI'C3.SI.lfCI'. CLASS UF 1951 FOLLOWING the pattern of the entire school, the Lower School has the largest enrollment in its history. The size has not decreased the feeling of unity among the boys, nor has it kept them from feeling that they, as a group and as individuals, are a very vital part of the entire Peddie School. Through their elected president and vice-president, the Lower School is represented in the Halls Council, one of the Upper School governing bodies. The Lower School House Commit- tee, under the leadership of Mr. Van Cise, acts as the student government. This committee, elected in the fall by the four forms, plans and executes most of the social functions. The academic program is based upon the prescribed requirements of the Secondary Education Board. Through these requirements, the small- ness of classes, and their untiring ef- forts, the faculty sees that the students are well prepared for entrance into the Upper School. For the enrichment of the boys' life, special classes in hobbies, art, mechan- ical clrawing, reading, and religion are planned. A separate Junior Church Service is held nearly every Sunday. The recreational side is provided by supervised play activities and by well coached Lower School teams in foot- ball, soccer, basketball, and baseball. CREATIVE WRITING CLUB NDER the supervision and help- ful criticism of Mr. Everett Su- garbaker, the Creative Writing Club completed its program for the year with the publication of a pamphlet containing a collection of creative work done by students, some of them members of the club. This pamphlet contains work judged by masters and by the members of the club to be worthy of publication and felt by them to be representative of the creative work done by Peddie students during the past year. Throughout the year the meetings of the club took the nature of infor- mal forums to give members of the club a chance to present various origi- nal articles and stories they wished to have discussed as to technique, style, and mechanical faults. Also discussed at these forums were the techniques of modern writers who interested the members of the group. The recent growth of interest in creative writing is noted by the large number of enf trants in the national contests open to students during the year. Members of the club who were not present at the time of the taking of the picture were Manuel Gautier, Ray- mond Greene, and Frank Sanford. MOTION PICTURE COMMITTEE URING the school year, under the supervision and able direction of Mr. Marvin Burrus, the Peddie Mo- tion Picture Committee presented a full schedule of twenty top-flight movies to its 213 members. Highlighting the season were such great pictures as Swiss Family Robinson, My Friend Flicker, and jesse james. The executive committee, headed by Channing Farmer, was the group re- sponsible for presentation of the pro- grams. Mr. Everett Sugar- baker, assisted by Mr. Kenneth Van Cise, led the troop this year in a varied program of activities. Although much stress is placed on promotion of indi- viduals, the primary purpose of the Cub Scouts might be stated as provid- ing opportunity for all younger boys to get together for a good time. 102 The year's activities included indoor and outdoor camp fires, and skits and a hike during the spring. The Committee, made up of boys elected by the members of the Butt-house, was in full charge of all matters concerning the Lounge-from disciplinary problems to the reuphol- stering of the Lounge's furniture-and they acquit- ted themselves well. Taking pride in the fact that the Lounge was their own, all members abided by the rules and decisions of the committee. He may then rest assured that the matter will be given the utmost consideration and that changes will be made if they are deemed necessary. The committee consists of five members, two of whom-the president of the school and the president of the senior class-are members ex ofrio. The remaining three are elected by popular vote by the student body. Constituting the membership of this year's House Committee were Martin C. Battestin, president of the senior classg William T. The 1947-'48 organization consisted of thrity-three members, each representing seventeen students from a hall or house. These members were elected by popular vote at the beginning of the school year to serve for the entire year. Unless he had a legitimate excuse, each member was required to be present at all meetings, and three unexcused absences automatically dismissed a boy from membership. The organization held its meeting in the Ayer Memorial Chapel every other Tuesday 'at seven o'clock. The first meeting took place on November 14, at which time the following were elected as ofhcersz William Hostetter, chairman, Mar- tin Battestin, vice-chairman, and Nelson Taylor, secretary. Several special meetings were later called to make plans for the annual Blair week. Among the ideas brought forth was the one presented by the Headmaster suggesting that the Halls Council, on the night of the Blair game, take complete charge of 'the supper held in the gym because the dining room was going to be occupied by alumni. 107 f -1 T tier Coates, H' Ka'Ilil9Ti'i3 row 'Y V t ffgqzff -vw ' W. Included in this number were nine veterans of last year s var- sity one letterman from the varsity squad of two years ago and six mem- bers of last year s j.V. football squad. For the first game of the season the Mickeymen traveled to Philadelphia to meet Germantown Academy. The game was a scoreless tie until the fourth quarter when Dick Bankowski scored. The following Saturdays game against St. john s Prep of Brook- lyn gave the Shumanites their second 110 win in as many starts. The superb blocking of Jack Avis and Roy Lind- berg and the great running of Townie Oliver and Chuck Geran were the sparks for the team's of- fensive attack. After losing the next two games to Penn Charter and the Princeton Freshmen B, the Mickeymen lost a close game to Lawrenceville. The fol- lowing week Hill beat the Shumanites 2040. The team won their third game by beating Poly Prep of Brooklyn on a muddy field by a score of 21-0. Two of the touchdowns were scored by Oliver on brilliant runs. The third touchdown was made by Bud Taylor on an intercepted pass. FOOTBALL The Mickeymen lost the last game of the season to Blair, even though Oliver scored a touchdown to put us ahead at half time. Weed's trackmen did fairly well for themselves in closing the long season with a record of two wins against four losses. Captain Bob jones proved to be the strongest mainstay of the team. The half-mile event was not lost in dual competition. At the National Interscholastics at Madison Square Gar- den in New York, it was Jones who led the squad by taking a fourth in the half-mile. The first meet was dropped to St. Benedict's by a score of 43-27. At the Philadelphia Inquirer Invi- tation Meet in Philadelphia neither the mile relay team nor the two thousand meter entrants were able to place. The next meet saw Peddie in the winning col- umn, as the Weedmen downed Princeton High School, 57-163 but the following week saw Peddie lose to Poly Prep, 31-24. The thinly-clads vanquished B.M.I. in the Hfth encounter only to lose to Blair and Lawrenceville in the last two meets-thus ending the season with four defeats and two victories. 117 Ui y, Ili!! y 'fe' 'N-,t Sealed, left lo right: Hood, Christian, McCann, Reinfeld. It can be called nothing more than disastrous for the varsity squad, which can show only one victory against sixteen de- feats. While the team always fought hard and at times showed good basket- ball, the playing was too often medi- ocre and erratic. jim Brown and Captain Nick Schloeder as forwards, Ken Eiker as the center, and jim Metzler and Bill Meyer as guards constituted Coach William Thompson's starting line-up in the first few contests. These boys showed a great deal of ability as indi- vidual players, but didn't seem to be able to work together as a team. Con- sequently in later games Coach Thomp- son started a team which was com- prised totally of juniors. The junior five which had at forwards Douglas Melville and Randy Barnard, at'cen- ter Ken Eiker, and at guards Roy Lindberg and jim Metzler, made up for what they lacked in individual ability with smooth team work. The team's best game was' the Ger- mantown game, won on the home court by a score of 60-48. The first Blair game was a heart breaker to lose because it was close all the way with Blair winning by only a three-point margin. Five of the games-played with the freshman teams from Rider, Princeton, Rutgers, West Point, and Pennsylvania-were hard fought, but the team could hardly overcome such stiff competition. my fn f1f INNING three out of n1ne starts the B squad had a better season than the A squad However the team was handncapped by the loss of several of 1ts better players to the A squad BASKETBALL 1948 B SQUAD Date Peddne Opponent Dec n n C C C C C Date Dec Dec Dec a a n a an n a an C C C B E Epuscopal Academy Farragut Blaxr Pennmgton Germantown Lawrencev1lle H1 Blalr Lawrencevulle BASKETBALL 1948 A SQUAD Ped d1e Opponent Eprscopal Academy S Horace Mann Rutgers Freshmen Prmceton Freshmen Adm1ral Farragut Blau Pennmgton West Ponnt Plebes Germantown Academy Andover Exeter Pennsylvama Freshmen Lawrencevnlle H1 Blair Lawrencevrlle 44- Ezker Does U Agam of Brownie Store TWO 9 mm Fw' , , 4 f -Y 8 7, n 7 4 ! . 6 31 A ------ 24 ' Ja . Answering the first call for players were few, if any, boys who had played hockey before. From the group Doctor Montfort Haslam, the coach, molded a smoothly running, well organized hockey squad of fourteen players. Shortly before the season began, Douglas Peder- son was elected captain. Captain Pedersen and Dean Perry formed a solid defensive guarding line before jack Warwick at the goal. The front line was made up of john Alden at left wing, Mer Ivins at cen- ter, and john Robertson at right wing. In the winning column Peddie defeated Morris- town Prep twice, Cranford High twice, and Kings Park High once. Peddie lost to Lawrenceville twice, to Hill twice, and one each to Morristown Prep, Princeton Freshmen, and the Princeton junior varsity team. All practice sessions and games were held at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink in Princeton. SPRING SPORTS ONTINUING the policy inaugurated last year, we are sending the copy to the printer before the spring term in order that the Old Gold and Blue may be in the hands of its readers before commencement. Consequently it is impos- sible to include any account of the various spring athletic activities. However, we are able to present pictures of the teams and the schedules as they stood at the beginning of the season. The schedules are as complete as possible, although doubtless some changes will occur as the season progresses, and the junior varsity and freshman-sophomore schedules are still to be made up at the time the book goes to press.
