Some eighty-five candidates reported on the first two days of practice, and the coaching staff was faced with the job of selecting from that number a starting line-up for the first game, which was only eight practice days away. Fortunately, there was enough veteran material to give us something to go on. In our opening game, we defeated Adelphi 13-0. Against Newman, we were a little better acquainted with our material but were up against it when the captain, Howie Clark, went to the sidelines with an ankle injury which kept him out of the greater part of the season. Al Hanover stepped into the breach and did a line job. In the Poly Prep game, and all season, we had a fine pair of tackles in Kern and Lethbridge, ably supported by Laird and Hall. Although we were outplayed by a wide margin in the Hun game, we managed to tie Hun 7-7. In this contest, Cronin was in- jured, and Forshay did a fine job of replacing him. The line played superbly and showed plenty of fight, as it did all year. The Hun game had taken too much out of the boys for them to come back the following Saturday, so it was a tired Peddie team that tried to win over an under-rated Brown Prep team. Peddie was disorganized and went down to defeat 18-0. Breaks decided the Bordentown game and we lost 21-0. The climax of the season was next. Blair had had a bad year but was coming along fast toward the end. Again, it was Peddie's doom to go down to defeat and Blair scored the lone touchdown of the game in the second period. In this game, Vennell and Stanton played good games backing up the line, and Clark played a great game in the backfield. While at times the Ped- die team showed good basketball and always fought hard, yet as a whole the playing was too frequently mediocre and erratic. With only one regular and one substitute returning from last year's un- defeated team, the building up of a new quintet proved a difficult task. Uisastrous as the season appears, it was not without its bright spots. Peddie did tie for second place in the Eastern Private School Basketball League, and only a single basket in each of two games fthe 35-51 Blair contest and the 41-59 Irving contestj was the deciding factor in determining whether Peddie would or would not win the League title. A victory in the Blair game would have given Peddie a tie for the League lead, whereas an additional victory in the lrving game would have placed Peddie in undisputed possession of the championship. However, since records are made by games won instead of baskets missed, Peddie had to be satished with sec- ond place honors. One of the most satisfying results in the 1938 season was the meteoric rise of Bill Bleicher from a far from spectacular substitute of last year to one of the League's three leading scorers. Though closely guarded in every game, Bill managed to average eleven points in each League encounter and did so too with carrying his full share of defensive basketball. His uncanny eye under the basket was a constant annoyance to his opponents. At the other forward po- sition Marty Nolan showed decided improvement throughout the season and proved to be a very valuable member of the team. Marty, like Bill, always gave all that he had, and his speed frequently helped Peddie out of diiliculty. Captain Jack Cronin, who willingly allowed himself to be shifted from his regilar position of forward to a position at center and then later at guard, seemed handicapped by the change, for Jack, who last year easily led the League in scoring, found more difhculty this year in finding the hoop. At guards Ralph Winters and Al Hanover were somewhat spasmodic, sometimes playing rather mediocre ball but then at other times coming through to bring victory to Peddie. The other members of the varsity squad who were called upon at various times-Paul Robinson, Henry Erskine, Jack Williams, and Bill Zaiser-performed their work faithfully and co-operatively. Mr. Shuman and his scrub team also did much to help in developing the varsity during the frequent scrimmages. BASEBALL Facing a diHf1cult schedule of nineteen games, the 1938 Peddie baseball squad was forced to depend largely upon new men to take the places of the many veterans of the 1937 aggregation, including Captain Joe Wolcott, Lefty Burt, Bob Nolan, Lefty Long, Morris, Petruzzi, and Harrigan. Fortunately the new candidates were bet- ter than average, and a number of them soon demonstrated their ability to measure up to varsity standards. Veterans on hand were Captain Ridgway, Cronin, Bleicher, Bligh, Mulholland, Marty Nolan, Diehl, Dolt, and Jack Thompson. Outstanding among the new players were Hanover, Allen, Wald- stein, Hall, Hance, Zaiser, Neaves, Blodget, Riggin, Milici, Town, Southgate, and Masland. From early season indications the material was good, the prob- lem of the coaches being to experiment during the early games and use it to the best advantage-pointing toward the league games later in the season. In 1936 Peddie tied with Irving for the league title, and in 1937 lost out to Blair, 6-5, in the last league game of the season. One noticeable feature of the 1938 squad was the abundance of pitching talent available. Waldstein, Hall, Zaiser, Cronin, Mul- holland, and Southgate all being able to take a turn in the box and give a good account of them- selves. In fact, the problem was to give them enough work to keep them in shape. The leading rivals were again Blair, Lawrenceville, and Mer- cersburg. Top row: Mr. Sprout, Cronin, M. At the first practice a few strong men showed up, and we should have a successful season. Three school records have already been broken. Captain Schwenk threw the discus 128 ft. 4 in. to break Merrill Davis, old record of 121 ft. 11 in. Dusty Rhodes threw the shot-put 512 ft. 742 in. to smash the old record of 51 ft. 85 in. made by Aeillo in 1935. Rhoades also broke the old pole vault record of 11 ft. 102 in. by jumping 12 ft. 1 in. at the Prince- ton Interscholastics. Before the season is over some more school records should be broken. In our two dual meets to date we have won rather handily. At the Penn Relays we captured second in the mile relay and fourth in the 440 yd. Championship of America sprint relay. The team earned third at the Princeton Interscholastics, and with everyone steadily improving we have a good chance to win the state meet. The team competed in seven races and from the standpoint of races won, the season was poor, for we were victorious in only one out of seven. However, the scores do not show the whole picture, for in only one race were we completely outclassed. In five of the races our boys pushed the visiting team so hard that they had to ex- tend themselves to the limit to win. The outstanding runner was McGinley, who finished first for us in every race. Klein, Campbell, and Ciluzzi also did outstanding work, with Stumpp and Robinson completing the list of those who scored points for Peddie. An outstanding feature of the season was the co-operation and interest of the participants. S C H E D U L E Peddie 37 Trenton H. 'L ' It hardly seenns fa' to estnnate the success or faHurc of the past season merely on the basis of wins and losses, inasmuch as the hastily arranged schedule was, through necessity, composed largely of games with high schools who have no football teams and devote their entire energy and talent to soccer. The season's record of games with other preparatory schools is one win, two ties, and no losses. SCHEDULE Perldie Hightstown H. S. 5 Peddie 1 Hightstown H. TENNIS Invading the South for the second time, the Peddie tennis team won one match and lost two. The defeats were suffered at the hands of the Presbyterian College Freshmen and Staunton Mil- itary Academy, and the victory was at the expense of the Asheville School. Only one man from last year's varsity returned this year. All the rest of the boys on the team were new, except for Bob Forshay who played J. V. tennis last year. The returning letterman was Captain Clinton Smith. THE ULD l'illI.ll AND BLUE Although work on this publication was begun early in the year, the staff having been chosen during the fall term, the progress of the book was slow because of the many changes made in style and general make-up. However, under the guidance of William M. Fair- hurst, Editor-in-Chief, the staff easily completed its work, with this year-book as a result. An unusual aspect about the publication this year is the fact that its editor is the son of a Peddie alumnus, one of the faculty advisers, Donald W. Rich, jr., is an alumnus, and Daniel I. Messler, to whom this book is dedicated, is also an alumnus. Back row: J. Katz, Jordan, Lincoln, Lowy Front row: Gosnell, Wollmuth, Westgate, Mr. Hubbard, Austin THE PEIIIIIE NEWS Edilor-in-Chief .. Rapp Climaxing a banner year by making the first division in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association competition for preparatory school newspapers, The Peddie Newr made definite progress this year under the successful guidance of Ronald A. Westgate. The editor was given valuable assistance by Associate Editors Edmund C. Wollmuth, Jr., Merrill Austin, Thomas H. Gosnell and Robert A. Lincoln, who succeeds his chief as editor for the coming school year. An important alteration in format was the change to eight point body-type which was inaugurated shortly after the Christmas vaca- tion. A greatly improved appearance was thus brought about. Perhaps the outstanding feature of this year's News Board was the extraordinary spirit and camaraderie developed among editors, reporters and businessstaff. Seldom indeed are such loyalty to the school, firmness of conviction and unity of interest combined in a journalistic extra-curricular activity, devotees of which are more likely to be exponents of individualism than of co-operative en- deavor. Through the efforts and personalities of high-ranking members of the staff, the prestige of the school weekly has been enhanced to a point such that it is possible to be highly selective in the two im- portant matters of promotions and additions to the Newf Board. This should result next year in a weekly even better than this year's excellent publication. Since it is a paper published and edited by the students and intended primarily to be read by members of the student body, it is interesting and significant that The Newr was more extensively and thoroughly perused by Peddie boys than has been the case in recent years. The cabinet is responsible for the formulation of the policies of the Association and the practical details in carrying out those policies. During the years of its existence, the Y through the cabinet has exercised a vital influence in the s school life. It is considered a real honor to have a place on this group. Wollmuth had been elected chairman and Thomas Gosnell secretary, the work of the club was under way, with new members being added to the original number at the end of the fall term. It is the function of this organization to obtain and write up news concerning the school and its activities which is then sent to various newspapers for publication throughout the country. CUM LAUIIE One of the greatest of Peddie honors is the attaining of the certificate and key of the Cum Laude Society. Since Cum Laude is an honor society, it corresponds in the preparatory school to Phi Beta Kappa in collegeg requirements for entrance into the organiza- tion are very strict. To be eligible one must rank scholastically in the upper fifth of his class. Every year this organization receives approximately ten mem- bers, five in the winter term and five in the spring term. Hard work and outstanding initiative are two of the most essential factors in receiving this distinction, and those who do receive it can be well satisfied that they have done real work. They are admired by all for the persevering diligence they employed to gain admission to the Cum Laude society.
