E It has been said that the greatest of human satisfactions lies in the service of one's fellow men. In recognition of Hfty-nine years of teaching and forty-four years of head coaching at Peddie, it is with profound respect and admiration that we, the Class of 1938, dedicate this book to our masters of Senior English who have devoted their lives to this service. FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Adelphi Academy Newman School it Poly Prep Hun School Princeton Freshma Brown Prep Blair Academy iXiAway Seconds P. 16 14 6 7 7 38 19 Captain Flinn FOOTBALL The past season's football team exemplified the best type of Peddie spirit and sportsmanship. Throughout the season there was harmony between players and coaches, splendid cooperation on the part of all, and excellent leadership on the part of Captain Flinn. At the beginning of football season the coaches had to select, from a squad of 78, a varsity and a junior varsity squad, pick the first eleven from the varsity squad, teach them an offense, and then have them ready for the first game, with only eight full practice sessions in which to accomplish the task. The fact that the first two games were of exactly the right type to give experience without exhaustion or injury was very important. It meant that daily workouts could be more strenuous and more thorough. Conditions for team develop- ment were almost perfect. The only fault in a schedule designed to point for success in the Blair game was the necessary shift of the game with Princeton freshman seconds to the Wednesday before the Hun game. This change made Hun the third opponent to be played in eight days, and in spite of liberal use of substitutes on Wednesday, the boys lacked the keen desire for competition on Saturday. The splendid Hun team would probably have defeated us, however, even if we had been at our best. The team reached its peak in the Blair game. Our old rivals presented a clever of- fense and were dangerous to the end, but on that day Peddie had everything a football team needs. The line charged beautifully, the blocking was almost perfect, the backs were fast, and the offense showed variety and deception as well as power. In the satis- faction it gave the coaches, the performance was one of the finest ever turned out by a Peddie football team. The men of the squad maintained a very high standard on the Held and their coach feels that their conduct has made this season one of the most pleasing he has had in 23 years of Peddie football. Coach MacArthur BASKETBALL Not only winning the duampionship of the Eastern Pri- vate Schools Basketball League but also going through a schedule of seventeen games undefeated, the 1937 basketball team established one of the best records in a good many years. Though several of the Eastern Private Schools League games were very close, Peddie emerged victorious in its ten encounters, being followed by Horace Mann of New York with a record of seven victories and three defeats, and then by Blair with six victories and four defeats. Peddie's most notable victories in non-league competition were over Prince- ton Freshmen, Overbrook High, West Philadelphia High, Lawrence- ville, and the New York Stock Exchange. One of the chief reasons for the successful season was the aggressiveness and the excellent cooperation of all the boys on the squad. Placing of team play far above individual prowess was the spirit which carried the 1937 team to victory many a time. The team was not made up of stars but was the best balanced team in recent years. Every man was dangerous offensively and every man was good defensively. Only three teams scored more than thirty points against Peddie in any contest, whereas Peddie scored over that number in all but two of its seventeen games. A great deal of credit is due to Captain Bob Nolan, whose ex- cellent leadership, consistently good playing, and steadying influence in critical moments exerted such an important part in the team's suc- cess. The unusual scoring ability of Jack Cronin, who led the League with 105 points in the ten games, the most valuable assistance of Bob Person, who consistently outjumped almost every opposing cen- ter and was a power of strength and great scoring threat under the backboardsg the able ball handling, fine passing and cutting of Dick Hanley, the excellent guarding and aggressiveness of Giles MacEweng the scoring ability of Charlie Mattman under the baskets, and the speed and aggressive- ness of Dave Haas, the able substitutions of Ronald Westgate at center, Howard Moore, at guard, and Bill Bleicher at forward - all played their part in the team's success. Captain Wolcott, pitcher and outfielderg Burt, first base, and Nolan, center field, were the only members of last year's championship team available. Naturally, the loss of George Case, star pitcher and outfielder for two years, would be keenly felt. Front: Jolley, Long, Dolt, Thompson, Arnold, M.S. Harris, Van Horn, Petruzzi, Chapin, Mulholland Harigan, H. Moore Back: Coach Sprout, W. Moore, Zanoni, Bligh, Ridgeway, Stearns, Burt, Capt. Wolcott, B. Nolan, Cronin Haas, Blaicher, McMeekin, Steinigut, Asst. Coach Hicks, Stumpp,fMgr. Tl1e new material, however, proved to be better than average, and after a few practice sessions it was evident that the team would again be in the running for the state and league championships. Of the non-letter men returning, Bligh, Bleicher, H. Moore, Jolley, Mulholland, Jack Tompson, Steingut, McMeekin, and Dolt gave the best account of themselves, while among the new men, Morris, Cronin, Ridgeway, Long, Stearns, Petruzzi, Haas, W. Moore, Harrigan, Chapin, and Van Horn proved to be of varsity calibre. Considerable experimenting, however, was necessary before the best combinations could be found. The first game of the season, with Lafayette Freshmen, found Peddie on the short end of a 6-5 score. Lack of batting practice was a deciding factor in the loss of this game. In the league games with Horace Mann, Poly Prep, and Irving the Peddie batters hit their stride and managed to win all these games by comfortable margins The pitching of Captain Wolcott and Long was consistently good in all of the early-season games, although their support was at times uncertain. A thrilling 3-2 victory over Lawrenceville was one of the season's high-spots. We were sixth in the sprint relays, fifth in the mile relays and sixth in the medley relay. We opened our season with a dual meet with Hamilton High and won rather easily. However a decided weakness in field events was apparent which was offset by considerable strength in the running events. Our next contest was the Lafayette Interscholastics where we took third place without the services of our outstanding competitor, Fred Wikoff, who was ill at that time. With the way the boys are shaping up and the improvement in some of the field events, we should have a fairly successful season. The team as it now stands is as follows: 100 and 200 yd. dash, Schiverea, Robinson, Bressler, 440 yd. clash, Captain Hillard, Fearon, Oliver, 880 yd. run, Van Evera, L. Victories were won from Hargrave Military Academy, 4-1, and Staunton Military Academy, 5-O, but the Freshmen teams of Duke University, the Uni- versity of North Carolina and the University of Virginia proved too strong at that stage of the season for the Peddie netmen. The 3-2 de- feat at the hands of Virginia was probably the high spot of the trip with three of the five matches going to three sets. Individually, Charlie Mattmann and jack Von Maur each won four out of five singles played during the week, and all the members of the Gold and Blue team made a very creditable showing against some of the finest Freshman tennis players in the United States. The purpose of a third team is pri- marily to teach younger and inexperienced boys the fundamentals of team play through sports such as football, basketball, and baseball and, at the same time, give to them the opportunity to enjoy good wholesome fun and physical exercise. Each sport has a suitable schedule giving the boys a real interest in playing and adding spirit to the squad during the practice period. In football they won four games and lost three, winning over such teams as Newman, Bordentown, and the Hightstown Y.M.C.A. The lower school spon- sored two basketball teams, the varsity and the midget lives, and both groups had their own schedules and their own hours of practice each week. The most extensive sport program, however, took place during the spring months when the lower school sponsored a base- ball team in the Mercer County Junior Baseball League. A schedule of eight games was played and the opponents of the Peddie juniors were Lawrenceville School, Princeton Country Day School, Hun, and Pennington. The athletic coaches of the Peddie Lower School were Coach Weed, Coach Burke, and Robert Encherman. JORDAN Editorf Back: Freed, Berlin, Shain, Jordan Front: Briney, Darby, Westgate, Sanford, Mr. Hubbard, Welsh, Larus THE PEDDIE NEWS Increasing in influence and prestige from week to week through- out the school year, The Peddie News had one of the most successful seasons in its history. Founded twenty-five year ago by Charles S. Mitchell, Peddie '01, now head of the Department of English at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day School, the News has always been an important factor in the development and progress of the school. News Room Under the able leadership of W. Benton Sanford, Chairman of this years' Board, an intensive and constructive editorial policy re- sulted in several valuable changes being made in the school, and the creation of decided opinions in the rank and file of the student body. Having always in mind that it is the business of a paper to create opinions rather than to reflect them, the editors made their influence strongly felt throughout the year. Realizing that perhaps the most worthy and satisfying of the pur- purposes of a preparatory school newspaper is to give training and experience to students interested in journalism, Chairman Sanford made it an integral part of his policy to keep as many reporters as possible on the staff. A considerable amount of time was taken up in correcting and revising the work of reportorial aspirants, many of the articles failing to appear in print. By thus giving instuction and interested supervision to those under him, the Chairman built up an esprit de corps and an improved quality of work, both of which will be valuable to his successor. In the arduous but fascinating work of putting out the weekly paper, Chairman Sanford was aided by Associate Editors Richard H. Darby, Frederick Freed, James A. Welsh and Ronald Westgate, while a staff of co-operative reporters combined To promote the in- terest and welfare of the school, to censure when necessary, yet to constnict rather than destroy. In it is contained information concerning school traditions, activities, and organizations. The book, although primarily published for new boys, is still useful as a guide to Peddie life to many old students. The handbook was begun by the present faculty adviser, D. W. Rich, jr., who was then here in residence as a student. It was copied after similar student publications in the Culver Military Academy and in the Hill School of Pennsylvania. His assistants at that time were Henry Christenson, the organizations editor, Edwin F. Brittin, III, managing editor, and Herbert Sugden, the business manager, with Mr. Rich as editor-in-chief. Since then, such students as Alfred Vlfenzel, Francis jackson, and Howard E. Moore, jr., have filled the head position. THE OLD GOLD AND BLUE Throughout the United States, thousands of boys embark each fall for hundreds of independent preparatory schools. From the superficial point of view they are in quest of an education or, more specifically, preparation for college. Now as these boys come before their teachers and coaches during the first few days of school, it is with a feeling of trernulous excitement that is always youths' at the commencement of any new adventure. The autumn progresses with its busy days, its glorious, invigorating air, and the glamor of foot- ball. In the midst of this sometimes frenzied whirl, what is happen- ing to these boys? New interests, new friends, new points of view, fresh convictions concerning the world about them--all crowd in upon their lives in a manner that will admit of no resistance, even by the most hardened. But most significant and most important among all these things are the friendships and the contacts formed during the pursuance of the many activities. Indeed, there are few things that a man may look back upon at the end of life which are more dearly cherished than the associations of a vigorous, profitable life. Hence it is that here in such a school as Peddie, even with no longer a perspective than a few months, we think and feel about our experiences here with an enthusiasm and a satisfaction that must somehow find expression. As long as human nature remains what it is-and there seem to be few prospects of its changing to any great degree - there must be an articulaton, an expression, a chronicling of living. And so here we have expressed, here we have set down a record of what has meant far more than this pulp and dye can ever tell. r V dwg! ai: ir --Wsfkii Back: Enchernian, Mr. Rich, Burris, Forshay, Hardman, Ackerson, Pelers, Sargent, Anisz, Jordan Frunl: Clark, Saxton, Bligh, Belts, MacKay THE OLD GOLD AND BLUE STAFF lfdiffu'-ill-Cliiuf -lAlIl'lCS D. liligll, jr. The atmosphere created may have been a chilly one, but memo- ries of it will ever be warm and lasting. June nights and moonlight produced a perfect combination for the Spring Promenade and Informal Dance, june 4th and Sth. The music was good, the girls, lovely, and the setting in tune with all Nature. In other words, it is the desire to give expression, to dramatize our lives. The Dramatic Club at Peddie is only one means of giving outlet to the urge to get away from ourselves, to be someone else. Many boys have discovered that they can outdo themselves when they take the part of another. They have broken away from the old limitations and have gained a sense of new freedom. This sense of new freedom gives them greater confidence and poise when they return to their natural roles. Peddie has produced many splendid plays. Last year's production journeys End by R. C. Sheriff, was an outstanding, strong play. This year the Club will produce The Dark Tower, a new play of high rank. Back: Bradford, Lubin, Smith, F.
