A Corporal's Diary JUNIOR HISTORY June 23, l942 Dear Diary, lt has been a hot and hard day and I'm all worn out however, lm as happy as a Buck Private on his first furlough and I can't help but feel proud as I look back over this past year. The class activities started right in and we began by electing Betty Greene and Bill Littles as G. O. representatives, After weeks of discussion, we finally elected Bill Littles as our class president, Eleanor Schonfeld as secretary, and Robert Heidgerd as treasurer. When Mary left school, Russel Hyslip was elected to succeed her. Oh me, midyear exams, they were enough to scare anyone out of his skin. Well, we knew we had to go through them anyway, but they always left us in a dither. When we came back from our Christmas vacation, we found that our dear adviser, Mr. Raymond Godfrey had left us for government service. Naturally, we didn't forget him and we didn't want him to forget us--so we sent him four beautiful but educational books. Soon we got started on our prom, but having no money, we started to earn some. We sponsored the exciting picture Heroes of the Alamo . This straightened us out financially and we were able to pay back our debt to the G.O. Then our company of Corporals decided that Friday dances and Thursday cake sales would help. Our good judgement increased our finances and we began to plan our prom. Jackie Bratton handled the publicity with Bill Rowan as the head of the decorations. The Pan-American theme in our decorations and made a very favorable impression on all those who attended. The prom was a success and ended our year's activities. A Private'S Letter Home ISOPHOMORE HISTORYI Dear Mom, Now that we-'re coming close to becoming Corporals, I get the same feeling that I did when we became First Class Privates last September. I can remember how we strutted up and down the halls feeling quite the thing and even a little proud when we could help a bewildered Buck Private. We've been put through some pretty tough paces in Geometry, Biology, Latin ll and other subjects which make us entirely eligible, if we pass, for the rank of Corporal. On the whole we haven't done anything outstanding, Mom, but we have a swell bunch and that's what counts a lot. They do their jobs whole-heartedly and usually succeed. We are now well acquainted with our teachers and even stay after school with them for a half an hour now and then just to show our affection. Some of us have favored Mr, Lawrence by making his lab desks nice and shiny because we used our freedom of speech at the wrong time, l'm afraid, but we still like him. Members of our company have engaged in such sports as football, basketball, soccer, baseball and track and have done a pretty good job of it too. As far as war bonds and stamps are concerned, we've reached a total of around SZOO, and we intend to keep right on buying more and more until the battle for freedom is won Now all that we have between us and becoming Corporals are the final tests which will be overl come by victory-we hope!
